The reason this works is because the "up and down" is basically revert faro. Therefore, the first one will put cards that are together (joker and selection) exactly apart from the joker, half the pack (in this case the pack is 20, half is 10, counting in both directions). The second one will reduce the distance to the joker in half (again, in this case will be 5). This means that, when removing the joker we will have one of the selections 5 from the top, and the other one, 5 from the bottom (this one will be the 6 position in the 10 pack). One funny thing is when we do the revert faro, it does not matter which pack goes on top or bottom, therefore we can have each spectator do this part and decide which pack goes where.

I really liked the trick, but I've started doing it a little differently. I put the joker in face up and the other cards face down! Let the cards be shuffled, then tell the spectators their chosen cards are about and below the joker. This way, the other faces aren't seen by anyone, and you don't see the chosen cards either! Then, when it comes time to separate the cards into 2 piles, you spread the cards face down and find the joke, which is face up. Separate the cards above and below the joker into 2 piles. Remove the joke. Then finish the cut. Next, separate the cards into the 2 piles if 10. Finally, I reveal my prediction before they locate their card... by saying, "ok, I made to prediction, let's see if I'm right!" Then I show the 5 and say this means your card is the fifth card down. They count down 5 cards, and I ask them, "For the first time, tell everyone what your selected card was." And of course, they are holding their chosen card! Then repeat for the second chosen card. I prefer this because no one sees any of the cards except the 2 chosen cards by the spectators only! Well, other than the joker, which everyone see!
I’m confused how this works, if no one has seen the card and if you reveal your prediction, how can they tell you what their card is? When do they look at the cards?

I'm thinking about the trick and since you know the position of the cards (5 and 6) you could do the divination of the 2 cards with the excuse of looking for them or something like that... you have to think about it carefully... good trick!!
