    Thematically I really like the spell Druid grove. It has such an amazing variety of effects and the idea of using downtime to make a permanent area of magical forest just seems so...druidy!

    while i agree that shapechange is the most useful spell, storm of vengeance hold a special place in my heart for it's range of "sight". It evokes to me the image of a pissed off druid standing on a mountain top, looking over at a faraway castle on the horizon and deciding "#%@% that place" and raining death and misery from miles and miles away

    I love Shapechange simply because it harkens back to an old myth about Merlin. He was duelling either his student or Morgana (depending on the version) and both parties kept changing into different animals as they fought across Britain.

      the wizard in my party just did something similar. party of 4 vs about 15 enemies including a cr 8 giant. Giant was a smith so encounter happened in his foundry room. Wizard cast animate objects on the molten metal in the oven. I ruled it a single large object. He treated it as a fire elemental that swallowed enemies whole. took out the giant then released his concentration on the spell when the molten mess was in the middle of the other enemies and whooosh, insta-victory. I didn't even roll damage for them. It was too much fun to describe what happened.

    I play a level 15 Moon Druid in a seafaring pirate campaign. A few sessions back, two ships were cornering an allied ship of ours, firing on it as we approached. As we plowed full sail towards it, I stood at the bow, casting Tsunami during our approach. It picked up one ship and slammed it into the other, capsizing both and decisively finishing the battle over the course of a minute.
    High level Druids are barely-contained natural disasters, and it's wonderful.

    one thing to note about transport via plants is that it doesn't say the terms teleport, portal, or extra-planar anywhere in the spell, in fact it almost seems to explicitly avoid any use of those terms. meaning that technically warding spells that normally protect against those effects such as private sanctum or Forbiddance won't protect from this spell. For example if a wizard tower happens to have an alchemical garden with a tree in it you could transport to. of course this is a bit of a technicality so make sure to ask your DM about it beforehand to see what they think.

Still, if you turn into a Dragon with its +10 to Con Saves(or more) it takes a heavy hit before there's a possibility of losing Concentration. "Loses gas?" Yeah right! A high level Druid is an army killer. Storm of vengeance used on an encampment will completely wreck it and kill most of the soldiers camping there. Earthquake can take out whole villages or smaller camps and make it impossible to travel because of all the fissures. Control Weather can bring an army to its knees when your temperate, overcast, calm day becomes arctic cold, torrentially raining and storming.
    Let's not forget Mirage Arcane (1 of 2 illusion spells the Druid learns), which literally changes (disguises) the landscape to whatever you desire, granting you ultimate control of the battlefield, and lasts for 10 days.

    • @yvindblff5628
      @yvindblff5628 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, how would you go about it? You couldn't hope for success by the usual assassin means, sneaky crossbows from the bushes, or poison in their food.
      For my current party, the would-be assassin would need to think outside the box.
      Managing to separate one party member and applying some paralytic effect seems the best course of action.
      Of course, as a DM, you don't actually want to kill the player characters, especially not in such a cheap manner, where they don't get to retaliate.
      But that *is* how assassins operate. They cheat. They lie. They take every advantage they can get.
      This makes it a tricky prospect.

      I mostly just wanted to point out that Shapechange is also on the Wizard spell list, but really in the lore Maleficent is/was a fairy, so she likely has an innate spellcasting ability. But if she has any class levels, I would agree that she's likely a druid. But tbh she's probably an archfey and/or a really good-looking hag or something.

  • @MagicalMaster
    @MagicalMaster 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Basically a druid is a BIG TIME battlefield controller. A lot of the good stuff is at lower levels, but the Wall of Thorns can and WILL stop an entire army on the spot and it has that wonderful, dark fairy Tale feel to it. Fire Storm is another Fairy Tale spell in the idea of 'He burned the whole village down!' it's a show of serious power and can burn an entire fleet of ships to cinder. Tsunami wipes out a port and the town around it which cripples a nation's trade. Finally Shapechange. You need to face a dragon? Well now you got another dragon to fight it for your favourite godzilla movie moments. Or in case you need to just eat a Dark Knight.
    All of these are not only solid picks, but I chose them because it feels like something out of a fairytale doesn't it? I used Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty for inspiration. Straight up fairy tale and something that a BBEG could pull out. Now imagine the heroes using it tactically.

    Important to note; You don't HAVE to touch a tree with Transport Via Plants. It can also be any tree you have seen at any time. So truly? You can create a network of transportation. It doesn't necessarily have to be between two tree's. It can be any tree you have seen or touched as your destination.

    • @mduckernz
      @mduckernz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, like as seen with Keyleth from CR's Campaign 1... she would regularly scry on intended destinations to find a suitable tree, and then transport the party there. Pretty damn useful! Arguably significantly better than Teleport for any places that have trees, which is most of them (like, at least ONE of decent size... no need for a forest or anything!) because there is no risk of mishaps (everyone taking a lot of force damage, possibly even repeatedly!) or bad targeting (similar destination but not the intended one)

If you are the druid and you have 5 others in your group (total of 6) can you "pop" in and out only a single character at a time for an encounter while the rest are still in gaseous form, or must it be the entire party all be in gaseous form or the entire party all in their normal form?

Until the spell ends, a creature can revert to cloud form, which also requires the 1-minute transformation."

    The following isn’t unique to druids, but it’s fitting for them. Pretty sure this is legal RAW, but it’s definitely cheese.
    1. Enter a scenario where turns are required. This is to appease a pedantic DM.
    2. True Polymorph yourself into a hydra, then wait an hour to make it permanent. (If an ally has True Polymorph, instead Ready the spell Time Stop with being morphed as the trigger. You should now have 1d4+1 extra turns as a hydra. This is optional, but if helps speed things along.)
    3. Now for the weird part: attack _yourself_. This will give you more heads. More heads = more attacks.
    4. Find a safe way to repeat step 3 ad nauseum.
    You can now attack as many times as you want per turn. Eat it, fighters! Errr... I guess the hydra’s doing eating actually, lol.

    @PastMourning ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd agree with them that Shapechange is probably the most useful 9th level spell you could possibly choose, but there are a few mistakes I believe they make or maybe things they over looked. When shape changed, it would function no different that wild shape in that you are unable to cast spells if they require material or verbal components assuming you are unable to provide those. Theoretically, a dragon can speak and you could choose to have your focus drop on the ground beside you when you shape change then pick it up, but consider for a moment that any spell that can't be cast through your focus requires components and even if you were to pick up your component pouch, trying to get a single claw inside of a component pouch to remove a gem when the pouch is the size of a purse and the claw is the size of a trackhoe bucket.
    Also, you can still only transform into things you have seen. You're high level so I am sure you've seen some shit in your day XD but just cracking open the MM and picking out the most OP things you can find won't fly.
    Also, assume you need a very specific spell for a certain reason, say you need to resurrect someone, even had you seen a creature that could do so, if you've never seen the creature cast that spell and you are unable to pass a skill check to see if you know of a creature that can cast that spell, it is very meta gamey to go through the book looking for a creature that can do that so that you can transform into them. Certainty, if you have turned into that creature before though, you'd know of all of its abilities.
    That said, druids are f'ing awesome. Best spell casting class in the game IMO. You might lament not having wish, but I don't. In older editions it wasn't as big of a deal. When the spell also cost at minimum 5,000 xp and doesn't cover all component cost, that stops a lot of the abuse. Now it is playing whack a mole trying to tell players what will happen if they abuse wish for unlimited wealth or power. It's at the point that I just tell players, abuse wish only if you are ready to reset at 1, because either I am going to end your world, or you are going to end mine. Most likely, (most definitely) the former.

  • @ai2802
    @ai2802 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This video was amazing and filled with love for the druid. One thing I will say however in regards to Shapechange is that you need to have seen the creature at least once before you can turn into them. So if your DM doesn't want you to turn into certain problematic creatures, they can just never throw them at you. In this sense, its a lot less amazing and makes it significantly harder to abuse. However, imagine the fun of using this spell and then turning into every 1 hit wonder the DM has thrown at you over the course of the campaign!!
    And I think that's why Druid is such a wonderful class. Its thematic, its powerful, but above all, its fun. Its not always about throwing the biggest fireball or distorting the very fabric of the universe with Wish. Sometimes, its about taking notes of every scary creature the DM has used against you and "returning" the favor!

    Casting reverse gravity shouldn't make the person hover. Someone would be at their maximum velocity when they reached the top of the column, I don't understand the logic of them slowing down and stopping unless the effect started to get weaker as the person got higher. Spell doesn't say that so in my mind it should launch a person to around 160-170 feet. 200 feet without air resistance.

    conclusion we put away the concentration from it because with it its more ore less ''just'' a spell for exploration. in combat you cant really show others your magical power as a druid that you should have when jou achived to cast some of the strogest magic that exist in dnd
    for example a wizzard with his meteor swarm or kleric with mass heal or warlock with power word kill or the bard with literally each spell that exist.

    I like all The spells they suggest, as someone who has played same druid 2 times a week for a year and a half.
    Never used shapechange though, i keep that for if i ever play high lvl moon druid for the theme.
    I use forsight alot.
    If you arent focused on combat its a clear winner but we have a rogue, its an insane combo, so much it felt like cheating, for the rogue to be able to have advantage all the time in combat is amazing.

    I think transport via plants actually sucks. No living plant is inanimate; some definitions of inanimate literally mean not alive, but even the ones that just mean motionless don't apply to living plants. Every plant is chemically reacting, slightly changing the direction it's growing in, communicating with its environment, etc.

    Can you guys do more mid level spell videos like you did with the cleric? Most pre made campaigns rarely go above level 10.

    Intellect devourer new build imma do it
    Also storm of vengeance is really fun and destructive but it doesn't make up to the power of shape change

    Wait a minute.
    a dragon has a spell called change shape.
    can you use that spell?
    if that is true than you can shape change into a dragon, than change shape into a human. so, you are a human but also a dragon but a human.
    I think that i just fried my brain.

    Read through Shapechange, but legendary reactions don't fall under Legendary actions and therefore can be used by the caster.
    So when you take a stupid amount of damage or otherwise and somehow fail concentration, you can just burn 1 legendary resistance to stay transformed. Also, as legendary resistances are tied to a form and not the character, if the druid managed to change into something else (that might be weaker) but still has the legendary resistances, those are effectively refreshed.

    The only construct I would allow a Druid to become is something like a wood golem or maybe an ent

    Tsunami is from the PHB and its a 1 minute cast time, while cool its very situational.
