    In this lesson, we learn the basics of programming drums within Studio One. Drum programming forms a large part of my life as a composer, depending on genre, and I give it a high priority on my list of most important things an aspiring producer/composer should study. Please leave any questions or feedback below in the comments section.

    Thanks for getting right to creating a drum pattern. Too many "intro" videos spend half or more of the time exploring all kinds of extraneous options and features. Most new users just want to lay down a track in the simplist way. Plenty of time to get into more advanced features later.

    Great video and great course. Nice work! How do I set it up so my playing drums on keyboard (I prefer to play by feel rather than mouse clicks) starts at the start of the bar so I can make a loop out of it?
    Also, I am assuming that when I record the drum notes I then quantize by highlighting and pressing control and Q?

    • @maxkonyi
      @maxkonyi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need to set your playhead at the start of the bar you want to record on, make sure recording count-in is enabled, and that your metronome is enabled. Then, hit record, wait for the 4-beat count-in and start playing along to the click.
      To quantize afterwards, slsect the notes and press Q!

    Hi. I'm really struggling to create a loop by playing keys by feel to a mentronome.. When I duplicate it, I'm struggling to get it to continue in exactly the same speed, and pattern as the part I duplicated. You did it so easily. How do I get it to continue in the same pattern without the drum 'stutter' of one bar going into the next

    • @maxkonyi

      - Does your loop fit nicely within 1, 2 or 4 bars?

      @@maxkonyi Thanks, yeah i figured it out after watching some more videos and tutorials and stuff. This is my first time working with a DAW so I've still barely scratched the surface. Really incredible what this software is capable of. Also incredible the amount of information you gotta go through to learn everything. lol Someday, hopefully i'll get a full comprehension of it. I appreciate the helpful reply, Max!

      @@maxkonyi You wouldn't happen to know why when i go into the studio one tab at the top, go to options where you can scan for 3rd party VST's, I've seen in some peoples DAW they have a tab that says "VST support" or "3rd party VST's" or something like that. But mine doesn't have that and I haven't been able to successfully scan in the DLL files for the VST's I'm trying to add. Man just typing this stuff is so complex. It's like my DAW just doesn't want to find and scan in any DLL files or my DAW didn't fully upgrade to professional or something. I don't get it, another day, a whole lot more learned, still so, so far from understanding. lol Do I need to purchase the 3rd party VST support package in the store separately? I thought that it was supposed to be included in professional? Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -- Jake

      @@tulpasconstructor2711 If you are using Professional, this functionality is built in. You may need to direct S1 to the folder containing your VSTs if they are somewhere unexpected. You can do this in the main S1 "Options" window. How do you get the pads mapped to your keyboard? I've been googling and nobody is answering this for me.

    • @maxkonyi
      @maxkonyi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're looking to play the Impact pads with piano keys like I do? If so, and if you're MIDI controller is working properly with S1, all you have to do is make sure your keyboard is in the correct octave. The pads are mapped to a specific set of keys so you can switch octaves up and down until you find the right one.

      @@FringeSpectre Ok, same thing. When the qwerty keyboard is open, use the left and right arrow keys (i think?) to change octaves until the notes match the pads in Impact.

    If I'm trying to make metal drums should I stay away from the "Drum Pattern Editor"? I know you can convert the parts to a pattern but I'm not sure if its proper for Metal drums. The repeater almost makes my kicks sound useless. I'm not sure if your supposed to be doing triplets or double bass in pattern for metal? It works great for trap and hip hop and stuff. Just curious if you know anything about that. I havent used the other methods yet other than pattern editor.

    • @maxkonyi
      @maxkonyi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! Yes, I know a lot about that 👌
      I would stay away from the pattern editor. I program all my metal drums in the piano roll because it has so much more flexibility and nuance. Also, the samples you choose are VERY important. Striving for realism is difficult but fun. "Machine-gunning" is enemy number one (the sound of a single sample being repeated very quickly).
      If you end up being serious about this kind of thing, you'll want to look for a dedicated acoustic drum sampler. There are many! Addictive Drums (what I use), BFD, GetGoodDrums, Superior Drummer, etc.
      On my Soundcloud, you can hear a couple of short metal tracks I made some years ago. I need to make some more...

    obvious you know what you are doing but really sucks when you do a recording and give music lessons instead of showing what you are doing.
