my issue is the opposite. I trained him to walk at heel along with 6 other basic commands as a puppy and he was an absolute champ. He ignored all distractions(any kind of animal, people, people on bikes, ect.) for a whole year and a half he was insanely obidient and well mannered. Now he's 3 and inside he's still an absolute champ but outside its a roll of the dice. I have passed dogs of all shapes sizes and gender and I can't figure out what makes him randomly want to pull towards certain dogs. He doesn't show agression, he doesn't bark or make any noise, he literally wants to go up and smell/lick the dog. Sometimes quick movements like a leaf blowing acrossing the street in the wind make him spazz out, and sometimes he doesn't care at all.

First time watching your videos. You did a great job training your dogs, congratulations. I hadn't had much improvement with my scared pulling dog. I adopted him when he was 7 months ( now 1y). He's basically scared of everything, so walking daytime...it's just imposible. He's not food or toy driven outdoors. Hi! Thanks for watching ! And thank you! 😊... my other dog Nuke was VERY scared of everything when we first got him and he is now a very confident happy go lucky dog. In the beginning even people made him nervous and would pee when people would pet him... my suggestion is to use a friends dog( a balanced once ) and go on walks where all the scared things he thinks are and if he gets stuck ( not moving ) just pull(gently but firm) a little to unlock him as soon as he starts walking a little bit have a loose leash . The worst thing you can do is pet and talk to your dog when they are scared because it reaffirms them being scared in that situation. Let them explore (sniff) everything follow them( loose leash). Once that starts getting better start training in public let him get on higher things to balance etc. Hope this helps ! Good luck!
Hi Guadalupe, I hope you've made some progress w/your young boy dog, is he a Ridgeback? If he is food and toy motivated inside the house then he is shut down when you're trying to walk him outside. Taking him for a walk is too much for a dog that has already shut down. If you have a Ridgeback, they are extremely sensitive dogs and do not respond well to heavy handling or trying to force them to walk. May I recommend that you bring him outside, just in front of your door during the day (when there is little traffic). Have him next to you, touching your leg. Reassure him by leaning into him or holding him (if he's small enough). Let him know you will take care of him. Then bring him back inside and praise him and gentle play with him inside the house where he feels safe. Very slowly increase the amount of time you stand outside so he can realize that nothing bad is happening to him when he's outside or when a car passes by. Always follow up with praise and gentle play inside. Your dog will only realize that outside is safe when he is not shut down. You need to be patient and strong. When I started doing this with my Ridgeback, I started by kneeling down next to her and holding her tight, but she was 4 months old. I hope this helps.
Thanks for a great video! We have 11 months RR, Scooby. He is a good boy on walks somedays and pulls a lot on some days. Especially when he sees other dogs, he just wants to go play with them 😀 Does he need to grow up a little? Did Nala do any of this?
this. training never ends, if you don't make them do the things they've learned a little bit everyday, it will get bad. My Ridgeback was an absolute champ from 8 weeks old to a year and a half. Then I started to work way more, I got lazy and now at 3 years old there are certain things he wants to test me on. All dogs should be taught basic commands and be compliant, especially a dog as big and strong as an RR. unless you live on like a fenced in farm and can just let them run wild. When I was consistent and he was a year old I could walk him with just my pinky on the leash in the most heavily populated area with all kinds of stuff going on, now at 3 theres not a chance in hell. He isn't aggressive but I will never allow him to just take me where he wants to go, which is what he has lately been trying to get me to do. @@Josephamac

Great video on a very important aspect of training. Nala is quite a lovely Ridgie and impressive when she walks at heel in the woods. Have you tried it when you are running? I am a runner and would love to get a RR as a running buddy but I am hesitant that I would be able to keep control of my dog off-leash while running in nature where we might encounter rabbits or deer that trigger the dog's prey instinct.
Thank you! I have not tried it while running but I never wanted her to. She would run in front of me and scout out usually and let me know if there is any danger and bark. She would chase things but she always came back because we are her pack . And I've taught her to come back at a whistle so that has never been an issue . Im sure you can teach them to run at a heel though! They are smart and pick up things very easily.. if you are a runner this is a great dog for you!

I also was mostly referring to the adolescence stage. My Ridgeback is almost 4 and she didn't settle until about 3 ... all ridgebacks are a little different and male females seem to be quite different as well.. mine particularly is a high energy, dominant female who was CRAZY as a puppy but now has mellowed out to be quite the couch potato. As long as you are committed, know you are the pack leader, and you like to be active they are the perfect dog for you!.. if you have any questions let me know

Thank you for this video! We just started leash training with our 12 week old and this was really helpful. Glad we found your channel! Do you have any tips for dogs that aren't very food motivated yet? Our guy is so picky with treats, we have a hard time finding something he'll pay attention to.
You can try toys , or animal scented toy , or some dogs just love praise and that is enough for them! (Not my dogs 🤣) ... for treats I use all natural freeze dried beef hearts(stella and chewy), freeze dried raw open farm, or boulder dog co cooked Bison bits , which they go bananas over ... ( be careful with the raw giving too many to puppies to not upset their stomach... but you can do a really hugh value treat then a lower one the next time so they don't know when they will get something they go crazy over.. hope this helps! Good luck! So fun to have a new puppy!

When I used to use a harness on my Ridgeback she would walk away and hide behind family members or objects. However, she comes straight to me when I use the leash.
It take lots of practice! I practiced at least a week inside , then worked our way outside ... it helps if you let them run before walking to get all their energy out when your practicing for outside. Hope this helps! Good luck! I'll post more training videos soon

I hate walking my dog he is 4 months old, he is a Ridgeback. I am so stressed I feel like this dog is hard headed. We hike she pulls so hard my arms and shoulders hurt. I feel trapped with a knuckle head dog
Hi! Thats when we got our Nala, it just gets worse unless you start training now haha. You can do it yourself or get a professional trainer... you need time and commitment. If you are commited you can definitely do it!! I would start these techniques in the video right away... start inside! Also is he able to be off leash and run anywhere? They need to run. Also, a HALTI can help while you are training. Look up videos on how to use and introduce that.. the best thing I can tell you is to make it interesting for them and make them think they thought of it. Toy driven? Use a toy. Food driven? Use food etc . Patience, patience. Patience. They know when you're upset so they won't listen to you. Good luck ! And let me know if there is a video I can make to help you

Hello. Im new here. I just got a Foster Rhodesian Ridgeback mixed with a labrador.
My three year old still drags me around😢
Mine is also called Nala, & she like wearing her leash, but she pulls or I have to pull.
We also have bad days but have to be consistent and train always 😊
My Ridgeback runs & hides from leash and harness yet as soon as it's on and we go outside to walk or hike she is so happy? 🤔🤔🤔🤔

I'm trying this!!! My Rhodesians still pull us. It doesn't help they weigh as much as us either.
