Love this trip . I've made it many time running from Michigan to Salem Va to visit my son . The scenery though southern Ohio then West Virginia and Virgina is simply beautiful . There are actually 5 tunnels that cross state lines.....well 4 and 1 international. The one you drove thru, the Cumberland Gap Tunnel TN-KY, the Detroit -Windsor Tunnel...which has the American -Canadian flags at the border, and the Lincoln snd Holland Tunnels from NJ-NY. This song is a great one...I just downloaded it...:).I did alot of night driving on the main line of the Pa turnpike thru all 4 tunnels, and I always have this kind of music playing while driving. I just read this artist has passed away....:(. Good video...) I have driven this section of I-77....:)
Not as high or dramatic as western mountains the southern hills do offer spectacular scenery and exciting event drives. This tangle of " mountains" offers no let up in terms of up & down driving or twists & turns as they go on for hundreds of miles. The rolling vistas spread out in a green carpet in all directions.
@interstateruler Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. i wasn't too crazy about the song choice but because of the length it kind of forced me to choose that type of music. I'm planning on shooting more from West Virginia this year.
@FreewayAndrew Thanks... that is a nice route. I haven't made up my mind what Fall foliage routes I'm going to do yet. I was thinking of re-shooting US-211 in Virginia. This weekend, if the weather holds out, I'll be headed out towards Elkins, WV and filming some of the freeways/roads out that way. I also might do I-26 at the NC/TN border this Fall as well. It's important to pay attention to the weather that time of year too. Leaves are at peak color right after the first frost.

@aswchris Thanks.... it wanted to do something with a southern rock-ish but the only one I think would work is "Green Grass and High Tides" by the Outlaws and that's been used several times already. I like this song too.
My goodness, it is *beautiful* out in those parts. The scenery reminds me a bit of I-5 through southern Oregon, with the obvious difference being the species of trees. Hey, I didn't know that fact about the I-77 tunnel being one of only two to cross a U.S. state line. Great video, very therapeutic to watch. "Thumbs up!"

That's ONE scenic drive. That's an awesome video right there. Also, in the fall, I might have plans to do I-64 in Eastern KY and WV, including the West Virginia Turnpike down to Beckey(best for me to do it when the fall colors peak).

Don't you have anything else better to do with your time than sit there and scrutinize what lane I'm driving in when I filmed these videos? I know what the laws are regarding passing and rather than take into consideration how much of a task it was/is to produce a video like this you would rather obsess over some petty-ass bullshit like that. If you don't like my driving the make your own video of this route with what you think is the proper way to drive it.
@autofixation The issue at the heart of the matter is obstructing traffic flow on the interstate. Except for some lead-footed maniac doing about 95-100mph (sorry, I'm not perfect), I believe I was diligent enough and aware enough of my surroundings to get out of the way when I saw traffic coming up at a higher rate of speed from behind. And besides that, you mean to tell me you would have spent the bulk of the time in right lane on this highway? This is I-77 in a rural area, not I-95 in NoVa/DC
@Bryant5493 I would love to actually. Maybe sometime in the Fall/Winter? There's a bunch of roads in the Southwestern tip of Va. and Northeast TN that I would like to film. I also want film more of West Virginia as well. I was kind of limited on time on this last trip down to Southwest Va., so there's some areas I didn't get to that were worth filming.
Yes, this is a fun stretch of road. However, there are 3 things that kind of tick me off on I-77. One: the southbound lane seems to always be congested, especially in June and July. This makes it extremely difficult to get from the WV state line to the NC state line in a reasonable time frame. Two: people seem to think that they can drive 80 or 85 mph and not pay attention to those of us who are trying to follow the rules of the road. Three: people who litter. I’ve seen more garbage in this stretch of road than any other highway on the east coast. Those things aside, 77 is okay.
@wimpie25 driving down any turnpike in early Nov, it's always better to be in the middle of the xpressway since there are tons of deer that are either roadkill right on the side or have decided to try jumping over the cars...anywhere but on the side of the road is better to be....we must have seen 25-30 dead deer right on the side and had to swerve to miss on.....male hormones...if they only would quit running after the does.....
@kubsonpl Thanks but I really don't understand why you guys over in Europe make such a big deal over that. It doesn't really matter what lane you drive in here in the states as long as you move over when someone who is going faster than you in the left lane is coming up from behind you, which I try to do.
@VaFreeways Nope. I-74. It is proposed to follow all of the I-77 route from WV to NC state line. I-73 is proposed to follow the current US 460. (you're right about I-73, but this is I-74 I am talking about on your video.

Because I think you will find it's pretty consistent with my original statement about left lane travel "as long as you move over when someone who is going faster than you in the left lane is coming up from behind you"

@MazdaStrider Do you mean I-73?.... because I read that it was going to follow a lot of where current US-460 is through Blacksburg and points west. I'm not saying you're wrong it just contradicts what I've read thus far. Maybe they changed the plans.
I remember there's another long tunnel somewhere on 77 as well. Last spring i drove from ohio to florida and remember passing through 2 tunnels through the mountains. I cant remember if the other one is in WV or Virginia or how far apart they are from eachother. How long are the tunnels? I'd figure around a mile on each one.
I think I’ve crossed this part my grandparents own a house in French creek WV so we go there every year and I’m pretty sure we cross this part it’s either this or a diff tunnel Edit: never mind it’s a different one because the one I cross has the black and white sign that says “Welcome to Virginia Virginia is for lovers” this is a diff one Oop-
@FreewayAndrew Well we have the "keep right at all times" rule and keeping yourself save from roadkill doesn't count as an exception to that rule. Fortunately for our sakes, millennia of intens human activity in Europe has reduced the number of animal species found in our regions to mostly birds. It is very unlikely to encounter a deer and even less on the places where they put warning signs up "Deer crossings likely". However, we do have a medieval law that says "what you kill is yours" :p

Friggin riding the left lane! In VA, there is a code section that makes it illegal and the state police said that even if the vehicle behind you is speeding, you are required by law to get over and let them pass. The left lane is for passing...the sign that says slower traffic keep right is for trucks and other vehicles that aren't gonna run the speed limit at all. However, if you have to pass, do it in the left lane and when it's clear, get back in the right lane.
One morning.while I was on my way to work, I noticed a truck going lowland I was going around 70. No other traffic and when I got in the left lane to pass, an idiot going 40 in the left lane almost made me wreck. I sig despise

Going down those tunnels when your tired is a trip.. specially at night when its lit up yellow... its like willy wanka, when they get on the boat...

I have taken I-77 through West Virginia several times but exit it at US460 then head east towards Raonoke VA now i see what I just miss after my exit.

Very scenic drive......I had the opportunity to drive a good portian of I-81 to 1-77 into Charlotte NC and I truly enjoyed it.

this section is also a part of future I-74 all through VA... including the road multiplex with I-81 but isnt signed yet.

Nice road & great video but why where you driving non stop on left lane ? Left lane is for faster vehicles & you had free right lane.
