Evan answered questions between songs, and someone asked about creative inspiration: Evan mentioned he was really into the idea of a lead singer harmonizing with their own melodies. If you can establish the melody in the song, have the listener expect that melody to happen again, and then sing the harmony so it's almost like both are happening in the listener's head. Sort of related to your comment but I thought it was a really fascinating idea!!
I learned a lot from filming this set and then putting my guitar in Drop D! Learning Waveform and The Alarmist have given me a lot more fretboard fluency, so many great ideas packed into their songs
FIRE and you see how he just laughs off the "Pinegrove Shuffle" meme that was hitting hard around that time of year, you can see the whole room thinking it as soon as the chords hit
Evan's style of singing has seriously influenced my own attempts after hearing how he uses a full breath like that!! While editing this set I really took that to heart, to use a full breath
THE LICK THAT HAPPENS AT 21:00! At that point in the night we had some gentler songs, some well-known Pinegrove songs, and then Namesake (which I had never listened to before). It became my favorite of the night because you could see the room just go "WOW" at that very moment. I noticed also while editing that Evan tries the lick before the song begins, & you can hear a friend say "Oh you're gonna try that?" And Evan says "I think I will!" When he does it at 21:00 pay attention to the folks in the back area by the couches! He clearly impressed them
@@hiroprotagonitis im thinking of Snot and Take (but not saying that Alex G invented those chords, just noticing a similarity since Evan also listens to Alex G)
Hey thanks so much! Grateful to have been given the chance to shoot/edit this. s/o my teammates Eddie Kamenitzer on sound, Sofia Silveira second cams I'll give Dr. Dog a listen!!
One of my favorite moments in editing this: he sang the last "Today the sky is orange" & cut to his VHS tape, a blood orange sunset 00:11:36 in real-time. Thank u universe for that serendipity
Is he playing some new songs here? For sure a few songs ive never heard before and pretty sure ive heard every pinegrove song on spotify at least, like boomerang, scoot, baby freeman, or is it his solo songs?
Yes! Boomerang's a new one, only a few other videos of it out there. There were a couple others that he played but they're keeping private for now. I believe Baby Freeman's not streaming but known well by fans
Timestamps for The Shuffle: @14:10 When Need 2 played I hit em with it behind the camera, you can see some folks in the audience staring and pointing @16:38 Evan talks about The Pinegrove Shuffle @49:16 Zack does Pinegrove covers at the nearby coffee shop, and we got him in the room last-minute to see Evan live. He hit the Shuffle for us & still does great covers. I filmed a few! @49:40 Evan gets hit with The Shuffle
I didn't know him before this set, and I got really into Pinegrove after this show. I saw fofamungy's covers one day and thought, "Yo is that the guy I shot at the Evan set??" I think it is? I didn't get a chance to say hi!
It sounds pretty similar to Need 2 tuning in this show. When editing I left the strumming in at the beginning of Namesake for someone to help identify the tuning

either that or they totally do, because its their hometown area
