For my Himy I just bought a pack of 6 replacement relays from a reputable brand and changed them all, cleaning the plugs and adding dielectric grease. Done job. Not had a single electrical problem since.
Thanks for identifying a cheaper relay that works - Bosch, a German brand, is ALWAYS expensive, and Japanese electronics are usually good quality. As for the dielectric grease, just put a dab on a Q-tip and smear it over the surface of the contact, and that will block air and moisture from causing corrosion. The pressure of the mating contacts is enough to push through it for a good electrical connection
I will say this. As a new rider who never rode before MSF class when I bought this bike, I just thought it was my error making it stall on slow right turns. When I did this on day #2 it only stalled once, unlike the 6, the first day. It does make a difference.
Hello, the fuel pump stops priming in my bike at random times, anytime anywhere. And the weird thing is that it also gets fixed by itself ranging between within a minute to an hour. Its a very irritating problem that has ruined several of my days. I take it to the service centre and they say theyll have to keep the bike with them and they can do anything only when the issue appears in front of them. So there was no point of leaving the bike with them as the issue appears randomly in like a week, or sometimes multiple times a day. What was the issue that you had, how did you fix it?
@@amanxsharma20 it happened a few times randomly and then after a really hot day I couldn’t get it to start for a few days and I started looking for more information online and found out about the greasy relays. Have you tried cleaning them?
This video literally helped me get my bike running again. I have a service manual for every motorcycle I own EXCEPT my GT 650, thank you for pointing out which relay is which!! 😄👍🏼
I had to do the exact same thing on my 650. Was stalling for no reason, sometimes not starting. Ordered new relays, cleaned out grease, used dielectric grease instead. Issue never reappeared.
Mine is stalling at junctions, brand new bike, 4 pin relays which is good but absolutely SLATHERED in grease 🙄 I will clean and try again. Genius idea with the gopro screw 🙌 Im gonna do that now 😁
Hey there, watched your video and took your tip on the GoPro mount screw! A little tip on that… the screw is very long and for me was pressing onto the wiring loom below. Vibration over time will cause the screw to cut its way into the loom and possibly short something out. I’ve cut the screw and made it shorter, it no longer touches the loom and also takes less turns to screw it 👌🏻 Check yours to be safe… 😊
Thanks a lot for this and your other videos 🙂 Is there a reason you put grease on only 4 instead of 5 pins? Funny thing, in Germany a Bosch relais is 3$ and Panasonic is 10$
Thanks for the comment! I’m glad my videos have been helpful! The relays only have 4 pins, the empty one you see in the socket is not used for anything.
Alex. First part of my post Break-in service is done. Oil Change. Chose to go and do it myself. I am not a stranger to working on classic cars. So working on a retro motorcycle is something I can handle. Now I did have to order a few of tools but now that I have it all I can do the next service far cheaper. Price of service was another motivation as It would have cost around $500 for a Oil change and the Valve inspection/adjustment. You have already got to the service mark have you not. Thinking of doing the service your self? You already are adding after market parts and doing things like the relay cleaning.
Worked on a number of indian lambrettas years ago. Poor copper in the wiring, looms, switches etc. Caused continuous problems and it seems this might be an ongouing outsourcing problem.
Hi Alex, Thanks for this video. Its marvellous. I have a serious problem with my 2019 RE Cont 650 and it is that the engine cuts off once the Abs comes on and then the engine failure warning light comes on. I manage to start but after a few kilometers it stops again. One of the times I almost fell. I no longer have confidence in the bike. Do you think that making the process that you explain about relay will solve?? Thanks again
Thank you for the comment and taking the time to share your situation. That sounds very scary and you are absolutely right to be concerned. I am not a motorcycle mechanic so I would not know the best course of action. However, I would definitely try cleaning the relays, and replace them if you feel necessary. If the issue persists, it would be in your best interest to take it to a professional and having them diagnose your bike. Hope this helps! Ride Safe!
1:23 I had a similar issue with my 2019 interceptor after a year, it's only done 2000 miles now but the issues started with occasional cut out. Fiddle relays and it went again so I cleaned and fitted Bosch relays, thought it might be ignition switch but all checked out OK. Laid up over winter, fir a while I turned ignition on weekly to check ok. Then out of the blue, turned it on. Nothing! So carefully removed seat and side panel to attempt to find issue, turned my back and as I'd left ignition in on position, all of a sudden all came back to life! Studying visually, saw a wisp of smoke from area under battery, turned out the red wire from starter solenoid to fuse box has a joint located above swing arm, to access its wheel out and mudguard removal, the spade connectors were blue with corrosion and had been heating up melting the boot over, it's in a lousy position and wonder if it was assembled incorrectly, now soldered to new spades and waterproofed.
Can I upgrade to 4pin relay on 2019 Int 650? It now has 5pin stock relay. I'm concerned if there is any specific circuitry dependency on the older models.
Both 4 and 5 pin relays will work. If I'm not mistaken, the pin in the middle is blank and doesn't do anything. You can reference your relay sockets, the middle one in the row with three pins should be blank.
Hey guys, thanks for the nice video on the RE relay problem. I wouldn't expect such problems with a new machine... When I clean and lubricate the relays on my Classic 350 machine, do I have to disconnect the battery and contacts? Thank you for the information and I wish you a merry Christmas. Robert from the Czech Republic
Thanks for stopping by! It is recommended to disconnect the battery while doing electrical work. Using the correct cleaner and tools also decrease the chance of something unfortunate from happening. That being said, if you don’t want to go though the hassle of disconnecting the battery and the wiring, just be really careful not to overspray the cleaner on other parts. Please keep us updated! Happy holidays to you as well. Ride safe!
Very helpful - especially about using the GoPro screw - anything with a 10mm metric thread should do, as it's a bit of a pain having to use an Allen key, always with the risk of losing the screw. Regarding the relays, I haven't had any problems yet with my four-year-old Interceptor, but I will take the opportunity of checking them for excess grease. I would have been inclined to use copper-ease grease, as it is conductive.
Please make more videos, It's good. And go to some twisty roads, like mountains. That is the real where real fun starts. It's in the twisty roads and mountains, cold winds and adventure. Hey Alex, great video explaining the relays and giving step by step on cleaning them. I’m having same issue sometimes my INT650 won’t start sometimes, so I decided to clean them and reinstall. Is it okay to reinstall same relays or do I have to get new ones? Thanks!
Thanks for watching, I’m glad the video helped! There is no need to get new relays after cleaning and/or if the factory ones aren’t broken. However, you should always carry a spare relay or two just in case.
I have to ask, because I am (very) rusty on my electrical knowledge, how do you determine the proper spec to make sure you have the right replacement relay?
I did my research on reddit and various forums, the two products shown in the video were mentioned the most and the feedback was also the best. Perhaps someone more qualified could chime in and share their knowledge on this.
@@iamalexsun No worries. I came to the same conclusion as you did between the Bosch and Panasonic but my curiosity gets the best of me sometimes and go down these rabbit holes so to speak. Thanks for the response and sharing your experience thus far.

Sup mate. I also got an in650 as my first bike. Though I'm not through the break-in period yet so I avoid revving 5000+ rpm which is what you need to get to freeway speeds. Although I did hit the freeway once, my front wheel gets very wobbly on very high speed curves. Was wondering if you're having the same issue. Word is that it's the front tire that's the problem. Also, what was the mileage before you replaced the relay??
Could be a few things. None of them major, all little adjustments. One, an out of balance front wheel, which I doubt because the wheel weights are installed at the factory and in general are pretty universally placed and correct. two, the front fork steering stem bolt. The big silver 8mm hex under the center of your handlebar. It adjusts how easily the handlebars turn. they should turn very easily, but not wiggly loose. From the factory they're typically too loose. Loosen the 4 fork pinch bolts in the top triple tree. then snug down the large 8mm hex just a bit. then re-tighten the pinh bolts. You can find torque specs online for the pinch bolts. That typically solves the wobble issue. Mine never had it, but I went around their entire bike and snugged up all the bolts when I got it. It's not an uncommon issue htough.
@@SB-or5mjheh there, i have a question please. Do i have to lift the front wheel to adjust the front fork steam bolt or is it ok not to ? Thanks in advance
