  • She was long gone, long, long gone
she was gone, gone, the bigger they come
the larger her hand 'till no one understands
why for so long she'd been gone.
And I stood very still by the window sill
and I wondered for those I love still
I cried in my mind where I stand behind
the beauty of love's in her eyes...
She was long gone, long, long gone
she was gone, gone, the bigger they come
the larger her hand 'till no one understands
why for so long she'd been gone.
    And I borrowed the page
    from a leopard's cage
and I prowled in the evening sun's glaze
her head lifted high to the light in the sky
the opening dawn on her face...
She was long gone long, long gone
she was gone, gone, the bigger they come
the larger her hand 'till no one understands
why for so long she'd been gone.
She was long gone long, long gone.

Probably the darkest yet most coherent song off the album. The chorus just owns.

Surely one of Syd's best (and darkest) works. It amazes me sometimes, how Syd's songs can be sort of naive but complex at the same time (I'm just talking about his guitar playing here, not his lyrics). If you figure out how to play his songs, he isn't really a guitar virtuoso - he uses fairly standard chords and song structures - but he had a unique approach that was innately artistic and innovative. His work on the early Pink Floyd albums pioneered a completely different way to play electric guitar; he literally revolutionised the instrument... But in his solo works, we see a different side to his musicianship that doesn't rely on the ethereal tones and soundscapes he used with Pink Floyd. I'm so glad that we have this stuff to look at technically, but much more than that - these songs are a part of our lives and mean so much to us. What a legacy he left.

+GunproofGrandad He has an incredible sense of timing and its strange too because at times he is sloppy and constantly changes the timing and intensity.., but if you listen and love his music enough you start to realize its almost entirely intentional. I am convinced at times he goes out of his way to give some songs an awkward and free spirit. Yet somehow it all manages to compliment the bigger picture of what he is singing/writing about. If you want to hear an example of Syds incredible timing look up baby lemonade peel sessions. He plays a guitar solo in the middle and then another at the end. Funny, it was David Gilmore that plays the solo on the commercial Baby Lemonade and yet the Peel Sessions with Syd playing the solos completely blows its away. Its not incredibly difficult guitar work mind you but the timing is perfect and the feeling he puts out is intense. When I put Baby Lemonade on youtube and I hear that beginning Gilmore intro I abort and immediately look for the Peel session. Night and day.., I find it hard to believe they published the version they did.. only an idiot would have choosen that over the Peel session version but thats what David choose.. Go figure

+a mb Thanks for correcting me on that- you are right.. its funny I was reading something just the other night, I think it was something by Gilmore and he mentioned Syd was tuning his guitar and they liked it so much they put it as the intro. I get my facts twisted sometimes : ( )
I love the peel session version though.. that guitar work is hauntingly beautiful

I haven't listened to the Peel Sessions for years; I'll have to dig it out and have a listen. In fact the last time I heard it was before it had been commercially released. It's cool to hear Syd on the 12 string. I love 'Two of a Kind' and the enduring mystery of whether Syd or Rick Wright wrote it. :-)

This sent chills through me. The stand up bass, the off-chorus vocal, the atonal guitar. The lyrics make my optic nerves ache, and I know that makes no mucking futzy sense audibly speaking, if you smell what I mean. I don't think I dare listen to three songs from this album in a row. Sharon would never forgive me.

    My favourite Syd Barrett song

  • @AndyWitmyer
    @AndyWitmyer 11 ปีที่แล้ว +20

This is some of Syd's finest guitar playing: the choruses appear to mix both Spanish&Gypsy elements-and w/out consciously attempting to do so!
    The chordal major/minor structures of the verses(ft.dynamic organs,tortured/strained harmonies,etc)project a timeless English melancholy that was(until recently)widely ignored.
And with lyrics that are at once both maddeningly cryptic&yet wholly familiar,Syd displays a maturity not seen in his works with the Floyd.
Is Long Gone underrated? It sure is.

Wish you were here’ is not just a tribute but an emulation of Syd’s approach here as an acoustic song that picks notes, at least to start, around the E minor chord. Glad they looked after him by establishing the structure through which they could continue to honour his vision.

Can't believe that such an influential song as this has not had the views it deserves. Its a good job that a lot of pop stars after Syd listened to his music though. Roger waters took a long time after Syd to produce Dark side. At first Pink Floyd sounded and looked like a band without direction, a few flashes of of good stuff to come though. Syd took us on an inward journey of creativity and carried that on privately in his art. He commented years later that he couldn't believe all the fuss.

Just been flicking through the comments here ('lockdown', huh ? BS - more like : pan me if ya want - dgaF) and one Cynthia Marston made what I think is a very good point - to paraphrase : 'he left the memories behind cos they upset him too much'. This whole album has the sense of him withdrawing from everyone around him and retreating into himself (as I've said elsewhere), which I picked-up on first listen without knowing too much, or tbh being too interested, in the guy at the time. Obviously, my interest in SB has grown since then and he was clearly a talented and artistic chap but VERY sensitive : having worked a long time in the drugs/mental health treatment field myself, I still think it's sad what happened to him.

    "Til know one understands."
Quote frequently,I've always felt that this line in particular is a misheard lyric.IMO,the change I proposed not only makes more sense, but provides for a more sinister interpretation.
"She was long gone, the bigger they come, the larger her hands:TELL NO ONE, UNDERSTAND? Why for so long she's been gone"
See,by asking the listener to keep quiet, was Syd implying that the missing girl(w/her large&bloated hands)is already dead!?Has he fancied himself the killer?Discuss!

I've looked up "The Madcap Laughs" on Wikipedia and there is no mention as to who plays the Hammond B3 Organ on "Long Gone". I would venture to guess its Pink Floyd Keyboard player Rick Wright.

This reminds me of Julian Cope's stuff on Skellington Chronicles II. I wonder if Cope was influenced by this?
