Feliz estudio!
Hello. I am obsessed with Red Garland's play. Thank you for making this video to learn his style! May I ask you what the title of the pieces starting from 8:00 (key = E♭) and 9:53 (key=F)? I would like to listen to the whole pieces. Thank you.
Hi, thank you for your message. The one starting from 8:00 is one I made up myself based on Red's playing, and the one starting in 9:53 comes from "If I Were A Bell", from the recording "Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet" (last part of the solo). Hope this helps! Best, J
Hi Craig, thank you for your kind words. The tracks are not included with the book, but the software I used to create them is kind of easy to understand (if not there are plenty of tutorials on TH-cam) and very convenient for practicing. It's called iReal B, and I always recommend it to my students. But if you don't feel like using it, the metronome will be your best friend :)
Hi Rene, thank you for your kind comment, and for your support to my work. I use an app called iReal Pro. It's a very useful app for jazz musicians that I've been using for years now. Hope this helps, best! J
Hi, thank you for your message. I mainly teach piano players but I also have students who play other instruments. I can’t help you with guitar techniques but I can definitely help you with Jazz language. Best! J
Just out of curiosity and for learning purposes: in the intro to "you're my everything" (exercise 8) how do you use the pedal? Releasing and pressing after every strike of the chord or keeping it pressed throughout the lasting of the chord and releasing only when the chords are changing?
Hi Arın, thank you for your message. Long story short, F7 voicing is formed by the notes F-A-C-Eb and it's typical in jazz to add the 9th or 13th in left hand voicings. So, in the specific case you are referring to, I'm playing Eb-A-D. Eb and A being the 7th and 3rd of F7, and D being the 13rd. It sounds complicated when you read it but it sounds cool 🥸🎹
Abrazo!

Those big red garland chords are so nice
Yes!
They cover a big part of the keyboard.
This is Great. Thank you so much. The Last week i just got Crazy about Red. So Nice to see you Break it down in a Lesson
I got into the Red Garland's rabbit hole a couple of decades ago.... it's a beautiful place to be in.
Thanks for watching!
I just ordered the exercises! #2 is hard playing on the "a" beat
Thank you for your support!
It takes a while to get used to those rhythms but it’s worth the time!
Splendid!

Does anyone know what the tune at 8:48 is?
It's C Jam Blues!
From the recording named "Groovy"

@@JuanOrtizPiano exactly, I proficient with technique on the guitar but need help with language.
If technique on the guitar is not a problem with you we should be good to go!@@NizJazzBTC
@@JuanOrtizPiano actually the most important part of jazz is time and rhythm. That's why I liked the first part of this video about comping.

Releasing and pressing after every strike of the chord or keeping it pressed throughout the lasting of the chord and releasing only when the chords are changing?
Hi!
I usually recommend the second option you mention: change it with new chords.
@@JuanOrtizPiano Thank you!
@@bajtucha You are welcome! :)
What kind of chords these are ??? For example there is F7 chord that would expect to include in F-A-C-E notes but you played D#-A-D ????

Rootless voicings in the left hand my friend ;)
Great. This progression is based ob some specific tune or just made up?
Thank you!
This progression is what we usually call “Jazz Blues”. Basically an evolution of the original Blues chord progression.
Hello! What red garland song is exercise 9 based off of? Thanks!
Hi! I wrote that one for a I -VI - II - V progression.
Ok one question. Is the idea that..if you practice these exercises a lot then these rhythms will start to come out on their own?
That’s exactly it.
Repetition is the way to go.
Copy the master’s techniques, and repeat them until they become part of your “vocabulary”.
@@JuanOrtizPiano thanks. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
