I've tried everything from Aldi foam to Turkish soap over the years and my travels. Recently with airlines restricting liquid and charging for hold luggage I have switched to a simple bar of soap and my brush when travelling, as it's hard to buy the soap in the stores. I have to say some of the moisturising soaps like Dove work well for me and certainly better than the spray gels which are very common now.
Hand soap and lye soaps were used many years before shaving creams or gels were invented or discovered. I put my small chunks of unused hand soap pieces into a coffee mug, rather than throwing them away. I still shave with shaving creams, shaving gels and hand soap. Shaving cream and gels contain oils or moisturizing agents to help the razors glide much easier.
Yes sir, they certainly were. Pretty much anything will work. It's nicer to have a soap designed for shaving but in a pinch just about anything will work.
I used any soap and a cheap 2-blade with glide strip disposable for years. It worked fine as I usually shave every other day. I've since "graduated" to DE wet shaving and part of the experience is using different soaps. For air travel, I just use the Proraso travel kit (all carry-on eligible) and reload the small containers from bigger containers at home. Of course if I don't check a bag, I have to send blades ahead or buy at my destination but I carry a disposable for back up.
My grandfather used to go into the bathrooms and gather the hand soaps on the sink that were all but down to the nub, then he would use those for shaving soap.
I remember Big John (The Mad Scientist) doing a shave with Palmolive body soap, grated into a shave bowl. I myself have used body soap during travel, when I ran out of the old "Cancer in a Can". It has Zero slickness! But yes, you can shave with it. You can also shave with a shard of broken glass, but why would you??
I tried Irish Spring soap for a face shave yesterday. Difficult to say how good it was for a shave because the blade I used had already become dull. I used a knife to scrape approximately one-sixteenth teaspoon of soap and made a bowl lather, using maybe 19/24=0.79 teaspoon's worth of water. Plenty of good volume stable lather, but not so stable when wiped onto the face. Good shave result, for two passes. Maybe slightly dry post shave feel but really no irritation. Really , a soap formulated specifically for wet-shaving is better. I may try this again but with a better blade.
It looks quite a bit better than the Geo F Trumper Sandalwood shave soap (the cream is excellent, though), which I ended up using as a normal bar soap.
I did this along with canned stuff prior to using a DE razor . That bar soap made that mach 3 glide smooth! it wasn't a lather either it loses it slickness in lather form... i just soap up my hands and rub it in my face! This is why i preach wet shaving to my friends because i was so ignorant and the internet sucked at the time! lmao! i wish i knew somebody that knew then what i know now.
I tried Irish spring this morning and it worked fine. I love wet shaving, but it can be expensive, which flies in the face of channels that talk about the savings of wet shaving.
@@IAMCDB have you tried Mogno yet? I heard from a friend in Spain that it was just regular soap. Then some people found out it worked great for shaving. They started marketing it at the DE Shaving Revolution Crowd.
I would have ran the bar under hot water then rubbed it on my face like a shave stick, if you have enough stubble it might work, Old Spice was a good soap, used it for many, many years.
Haha, thank you sir. The main point of this video was to say, you can shave with pretty much anything. It's not nearly as enjoyable but it can certainly be done. Thanks for the kind words:)
@@IAMCDB I did this in a pinch a long time ago when I was using cartridge razors and ran out of barbasol. I didn't use shave brushes then, so I didn't get much of a lather. The amount of lather you got with a brush was impressive ! Of course now I use safety razors and have a ridiculous amount of shave soaps thanks to you and a couple of other reviewers on youtube!! haha . Running out of shave soap at home just isn't possible anymore. 🤣
@@brianh2287 Thanks so much. At some point in 2020 I did a video straight razor shaving with just water:) It worked perfectly fine but it wasn't super enjoyable:)
Interesting. I’ve done this when I first started for fun in 2011ish, although it’s been a while and my lathering skills are mountains higher than they used to be, but it was by no reason pleasing. I have issues with dry skin and this soap didn’t do me any favors. Can you yes but should you... probably not.
May I ask your thoughts on the Harry's cart? I was thinking about trying them but I always get ingrowns from blades (even after 4 years of DE use) and use electrics these days because if it.
Technique. I was the same way. I have a real thick beards and sensitive skin. I shave only with the grain and you need to map your beard. See exactly where to shave. Go very lightly. Rinse after each pass. Do not go over the same spot back to back. I also shave only with cold water.
Honestly, Arko and Razorock got inexpensive hard soaps. Just can’t justify saving $2-4 on a non shave soap. I tried the Irish spring cause the ingredients list is eerily similar to a shave soap. Its the amounts that make or break the Soap. I used the charcoal irish spring and took a lot of loading. Foams soso, doesnt stand long. Did use Duke Cannon soap in a bind, that worked, but bar like $8-10 so moot point lmao
Irish spring is just straightforward it literally knocks all the must and dirt off your skin it's especially good if you shower every other day it's really harsh on the skin but I love that non-greasy feeling in my hands and skin especially during the summertime when it's really hot and you sweat for no reason this is perfect I used to use it everyday for over 20 years as I got older I realized how much dryness it was causing so maybe I'll put a dove in there once or twice a week
If you're on a budget, get a $1 dollar shaving cream or soap. Problem solved. Also, what classic wet shaver doesn't spend tons of cash on shaving gear?
Dove may be better? I just know from personal experience, that Irish spring feels like it makes my skin squeaky clean, like Dawn on dishes. Too squeaky. Dove has always been "slicker" and more moisturizing, to begin with
I use Irish Spring for shaving. Works and smells great.

Neutrogena Glycerin Facial Bar is great for shaving.
I've used Irish Spring with Aloe for shaving for years and it works better to rub the bar of soap on the face and lather up there, thanks for sharing
Thanks Rusty:)
I've used African black soap for shaving- it actually works fairly well, especially if the soap has shea butter added.
that stuff smells amazing.
Dove with Shea Butter is also adequate. I’m glad you did this, I wondered about Irish Spring.

It can definitely work. Our actual needs are usually minimal. Our wants might be dramatically different:)

Great video! Love Irish Spring bar soap.
Thanks you!

Love your video’s I have learned a lot and love your bushes all the way from Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪
Thanks for the video, Chris! I think I'll stick to shaving soap. Not much of a chance I'll run out of that!
Cheers! -Rob
Great shave and discussion
Haha, this is an older one:)
Redbeard Shaves used Irish Spring for a head shave on St. Patrick’s Day.
Redbeard gave me my BSSW swag bag
jesus mesquita, he’s a good guy.
Wow..i thought that was a real legit shaving creme. Lathered up great and was effective!!
It works quite ok:)

I tried the same thang with PAA bar soap I also didn’t think it was slick enough for my taste
I thought the consistency of the lather was not as enjoyable but it was plenty slick for me.
I had not seen this one. It was before I watched you
An oldie but goodie:)
In a pinch, it works. Better than dry shaving.
True:)
What about rare unobtainium bar soap? That surely would shave amazing!?!?

Melt it down with a little shea butter, coconut butter, pine soap, eucalyptus soap, and add a little of your favorite aftershave.
That could certainly work:)

No no no no no, I did that with me swagger bar soap and it didn’t keep lathered and burned like a mother trucker, buuurned
Relevant video. I hesitate to spend too much money on fancy shave soaps when bar soap works just fine for me.
It will definitely work. It's not as fun to use but it will work.
Great vid. How about trying lever 2000?
Irish spring is the best bar soap ever. Manly scent
I do like the scent of it, that’s for sure.
Only products you need, Irish spring, barborsol original and aqua velva or brut. If u can't get it at the dollar store I don't need it.
@@mikhailkimbel91 Haha, it does work. That much I can say for sure.
*cough* Old spice
@@mikhailkimbel91 I hate aftershaves with alcohol. A good moisturizer like CeraVe works for me.
As someone who's just rubs a wet bar of soap on their neck to shave, a bar of soap will work good is you like thinn lathers

I’ve never done it before
I tried this with a bar of old spice and my face hurt and burned like hell. Like hell
That can certainly happen. You never know what someone might be sensitive to.
I've tried this. The worst part was the awful tight, dry post shave
