Aespa is back with their comeback called 'Next Level'. It's been six months since the last Aespa song 'Black Mamba' and I've been so ready and so excited for Aespa to have a comeback. I have some things to say in this video, please make sure you watch the entire video to fully understand my points. In my opinion, with the way SM have advertised Aespa, it's a no brainer that we'd expect something huge, espically with a title like 'Next Level'. I agree with you, to me, it sounds like an intro and then a medley teaser highlights. Listened several times now and it's not grown on me. They sound and look great, but was also disappointed that the MV didn't really further the culture universe video they presently released. This one didn't work for me, but they are talented and hopefully, the next one will.
I think the reason is that it has no basic fundamentals of a good song.
i think it's my first time seeing ja reacting to a song that he didn't like on his first listen. he's so honest tho, same to me i think the song will grow on me but there are parts that i really like. aespa are queens tho, sm needs to step up.

I really love the first part of the song but I got disconnected towards the middle to end. And based on what I have heard and seen, a lot of people feel the same way.
I love aespa so much, and patiently waited for their comeback. However, this doesn't give me the same hype as Black mamba, which was the best song of 2020 for me. SM should have invested more on the song itself because the visuals are already great.

Yeah but the transitions are so smooth that you just keep jamming to it. I GOT A BOY is the perfect example, but on this they should keep the two songs separated, next level is a good song and the beat drop is an amazing song, they should have produced that song alone not mixed it with next level or at least make a smoother transition, like Zimzalamim /ex:

Nah, it’s not SM nor it’s Aespa’s fault, they’ve always made this kind of experimental music. This one’s a banger in true SM fashion and I think most SM stans are used to this kind of concept. I’m glad that SM decided to give this kind of experimental music to Aespa in their early days knowing that the girls are ready to take on this kind of concept. RV took at least 5 years for SM to give them ZZB when the concept has been fully realized even before their debut. NEXT LEVEL SOTY

I’m not an SM stan, but reading comments from SM stans and remembering GG’s IGAB, I kinda understand where they are coming from with the many switchups.
As a YG stan, Blackpink and Treasure do have songs with switchups, so this wasn’t as jarring for me as others have experienced.
A big fan of the RNB switchup from Ningning.
I like the switchup in songs (for example in treasure i love you or zimzalabim) but in next level the switchups felt a bit abrupt for me... i took me a lot of time to start liking that song

Finally someone who’s honest. I thought I was the only one that thought this. I enjoy a good change in the flow of songs but that’s not how you do it at all. I can tell they’re good singers too ugh this could’ve been so good.

This is true to SM entertainment's roots. Idk how they do it but SM makes it work, the change in tempo is very SM. EXO, NCT, SuperM, RV and now Aespa are doing this experimental music vibes. If you listen to NCT especially, Hot sauce, that's another example of this type of musical arrangement..

well only sm stans will probably understand this kind of song structure since it's been always done by them. almost every group they debuted have a song that is made like this. also sm has traditions on remaking song coz why not?.. atleast they made it their own and put new flavor to it.. anyways aespa slayed.
I love your honest opinion of the video. I had to watch this a few more times for it to grow on me as well. However an original song, instead of another cover and remix, would have been better. This is my opinion and will stand by it. The transition into and out of the middle just doesn't flow well. SM does a much better job than this. I truly want this group to succeed, they don't deserve any set backs this early.

I totally feel you here.. first of all, the girls are super talented and sound good! the video has pretty images too.
But the song/music production here is a MESS! there is 0 structure to the song and there is basically no real key element(catchy part) in this song.
its just chaotic and not nice to listen to. as i said, this is no disrespect towards the girls, they did their best.. its just the sound production itself.

The beat transition wasn't awkward to me because one of my favorite songs in kpop is "I GOT A BOY" by Girls' Generation, and that song is like three songs in one. But, I got it why you didn't like it. What matters is to stay true to yourself. We want real reactions.

I will admit that the song did sound messy to me at first listen, but by the third listen I was DIGGING IT.
I feel like sm will use the same marketing strategy yg uses for blackpink. Putting in the bare minimum to reap the most benefits since they have already gained popularity and their fans will support them anyway. Now, ik it's just the beginning so it's too early to draw conclusions.

Its not really a marketing strategy. Its more of a perfectionist thing from Teddy. If you watched their Netfix documentary, he said that he is very particular on what they put out, thats why they have very few comeback.
Except Bp didn't put out trash songs like this..They actually lived up to thier hype.. I know it's still early to judge but Sm needs to step up on their next comeback
it’s not new to sm though. Girls Generation (SNSD) ‘s I got A boy also had these kind of construction to their songs. and i’m thinking that it might be a mash up or a trailer of their songs just like what sm did to nct Resonance 2020. The lyrics fitted with their concept too! this song just gave me futuristic vibe. i suggest you watch aespa’s Black Mamba Ep.1 to understand their concept more.

If you're not an SM stan way back when GG was still fresh then you're not gonna expect songs like this to hype you up from the start. But all in all your taste and affection towards a song is different from person to person.

It's okay to dislike it, it's not an unusual thing to do, change the beats. Although, in SM they seem to like it (I got a boy, zimzalabim...). First time I listen to it I wasn't feeling it, but after a second and even third listen, DAMN, it grow on me. I got really addicted to this comeback. I was also expecting something original, but I think aespa put their colors in the song and as long as it's good I don't really care much.
