- The Government has launched a Pension Credit awareness drive to help identify households not claiming the benefit, encouraging pensioners to apply by 21 December 2024. This is the last date for making a backdated claim for Pension Credit, in order to receive the Winter Fuel Payment.
Judith Brown is 85 years old & misses qualifying for pension credit. Far from wealthy, she struggles to understand why the government has cut allowances for people in her situation.

This form is multilayered to stop pensioners from claiming, pensioners are treated as soft targets. This is wrong at every level.
Oh is it wrong? 18% of over 65s live in poverty and over 30% of under 15s. I know who I'm more concerned about.
Also, the vast majority of pensioners don't need winter fuel allowance so I'm so glad for once it will become means tested

Old people are an expensive, unproductive part of society. The more of the economic pie that goes to them, the more that gets taken from investments / productive parts of society (which pays down the debt, funds pensions/health care/winter fuel payments). They can't keep taking taking taking during terrible economic times.
It's intentionally difficult to reduce uptake, increase chance of freezeing, increase capital gains/inheritance tax revenue and freeing up the house for the 'new people'.
People need to wake there are so many hidden layers to this problem, many wouldn't understand it.

The bbc showed a clip of starmer in an old folks home , before the election, he was shaking hands with the pensioners , hoping to get them to vote for him, its sickening.

Angela eagle on TV this morning saying that the government is protecting the triple lock is nonsense,she said that pensioners will be £1000 better off over the next 5,years which again in nonsense, pensioners will have lost £1000 in winter fuel allowance over the next 5years ,take into account the rise in energy costs , council tax,food ect pensioners will be poorer than they are today,and some pensioners will pay tax on the £1000 ,so to say pensioners will be better off is a lie and are conning the pensioners

its upto a 9 week process to get a verdict. Those who get the application form, cant manage to fill it in. Many have no internet access as even the library is now gone which was their access to a computer. Phoning for help puts people in a QUEUE which atomatically cuts them off at the 30 minute mark. They could have made this so easy. All they needed to do was say what is your yearly income from all sources? . The problem is the government is greedy, they dont WANT to give winter fuel payments to ANYBODY but they arent going to SAY that and condemn themselves, so they will have people write in every tiny little aspect of their lives to diminish any sense of independence and self respect they have left. Horrific victimisation of the elderly who built this country over the last half century.
By the time they have filled in the form (had grandkids to it for them)even if they qualify for the payment it will probably be to late for this year to get the payment. Why couldn't they give 12 months notice to apply that way all of those entitled to get the payment would have it.

Give pensioners back their winter fuel allowance who don't have a extra private pension on top their state pension. only state pensioners who have nothing else to live on dwp know who these pensioners our.its not rocket science this government is nothing but cruel.

And the tories cut off the safe routes, and because of 14 yrs of tory government we don't have the resources to process asylum claims, that's why they've ended up in hotels. Also bojo didn't renew the Dublin Agreement with the EU, which actually allowed us to deport failed asylum seekers, which the last Labour government was doing. Also a lot of other countries in Europe take in a lot more Asylum seekers than we do. A few thousand asylum seekers isn't the problem, it's the millions of immigrants who've come to the UK since 2010 from the EU, and outside the EU on visas issued by the previous tory government. Immigration is now higher than ever before thanks to our tory government since 2010
@@fredatlas4396 There is a way of applying for legal immigration status. Turning up in a rubber boat on a British beach is not it. I assume you have noticed the film reports of these events. I agree that way too many visa and so on were issued. It was a mistake. We know that now.
So what do we do? Keep on wasting huge amounts of money every day or fix the problems by repatriating them?
What other European countries do is their business, but it seems that they all want to get rid of their immigrants, legal or illegal.
Sovereign countries do have the right to change their policies when it becomes obvious that the policies are deeply flawed. We are not in the EU. We do not need their agreement or sanction. I do not care whose fault it was originally. What is required is action now.
It's the people that miss out on pension credit by a few pounds that are worst off, they've been totally ignored and thousands worse off than those that than get pension credit plus they get free dental and all sorts.
That’s us. Just under the threshold. Even if you’re a penny under you don’t qualify. It’s been really chilly in the evenings lately so we put a blanket over us to keep warm. Can’t put the heating on yet.
@@jellymulder you are exactly right. He should of set a financial threshold not a benefit to qualify for the heating allowance. Also £140 warm house scheme is payable to those on benefit per year.
They need to claim the hf fund...its a shame the tories have got rid of so many of the Citizen advice officers...they have been decimated...by tory cuts...all the pensioners on the edge of it just need to claim on the hf fund....my father is well off abd used it to put it in the bank...its the right thing to do..again cuts by the tories..a 22 billion black hole...twice they have crashed the economy
So they get a pensioner on that gets two pensions...no sympathy at all...

The same questions are asked again and again just to catch you. Why are they counting husbands income ?some husbands don't reveal what they have or give to their spouses ? You should be treated as an individual, not somebody's wife or husband,we paid our own taxes. Especially in this day and age in 2024.
My living room has never been 21 degree in winter. On the rare occasions I do put the heating on it is when the room drops below 18 degrees, if I am unwell. Government have to remember that with a low income it is impossible to upkeep repairs and drafty windows etc. Not everyone has the income to afford loans. When my boiler goes. I will not be able to afford to replace it.

Angela claimed 4000 quid on 2 homes last year for her fuel bill.
I think we can all see why Labour haven't been in government for 14 years. I'm sure the hatred for the previous government was the main reason why we find ourselves in this situation today.

OAP's find it very difficult with the 240 questions, some don't have computers, some are just so frail, shame on Starmer for doing this to our Elderly......The OAP'S should be looked after, they have paid into the system for over 50 years...

I have checked and my pension of £225.25 is higher than the £218 threshold.
My state pension is £ 221.20 so I miss out by just £ 3.20.

I'm 81 years.old and I'm not completely sure whether I qualify or not, and to be honest I would rather manage as best I can sooner than tackle.this complicated form. Apart from not wishing other people's, including family to have knowledge the of my income, savings, incompetence at not preparing better for old age etc, I'm also not prepared to have to admit that I'm too old and ga ga to be able to fill in a form any more! Dignity in old age is for my generation, important.
If you're posting comments on social media then you can fill out a form to get more money
AGE U.K. will help you on the phone or with home visits or in my case each week at the Doctor’s Sirgery. Cash in the Pension take the lump sum and then claim???

When you say can’t read because of bad eyes there are also older people who can’t read and write and understand long words used in the documents. I was a Literacy/Numeracy teacher for many years. These people are humble and don’t want to admit they have this difficulty.
If there is 880.000 missing out then they are aware of them so why dont they pay them what they are entitled to instead of asking them to answer 243 questions?
Yes it is the older pensioners mostly on the old style pensions that should be claiming.
You cannot get pension credit if you're on full state pension, or have any reasonable savings.
I get just over £2 a week too much for pension credit....I have cold showers, no oven etc etc etc. If I lose the single person council tax rebate it's pretty much over, literally, it's not worth living.
Get rid of Standing fuel charges
If you are a pensioner, having worked for a qualifying period, or live with such a partner, then you will not get pension credit unless there are other reasons why you qualify, such as being a carer or disabled. Any means testing is designed to be as mean as possible. Get extra clothes and blankets, and throw away electric kettles, microwaves, air friers etcetera, and heat a small amount of water on your gas hob if you have one. Gordon Brown Introduced the Winter fuel allowance in 1997 for pensioners to attract them to vote Labour, instead of Conservative in future. using the healthy economic state left by the Conservatives under Thatcher and Major, which they squandered away - Labour Kleptocracy as usual.

The DWP and HMRC know what accounts people on benefits have, they’ve made it clear that they can look. They also know what child benefits and Tax Credits etc are paid out for children. It’s an extra long questionnaire that is very likely to exasperate and intimidate the elderly. It’s ridiculous!
There is absolutely no economic reason for stopping the pension credit.
They are not stopping Pension Credit but you need to be under a certain amount of money to get it. If you get the new pension you are just a few pounds over but if even if just 1 penny over the cut off amount you won't get it.

Most pensioners don't know how to apply as most don't know how to use the internet. Most cannot get out so what do they do?

When i checked. If pension is 221.20 a week. There is no pension credit. No heating allowence, no help with dentist and optition.
There is nothing extra if on the new pension now. Bearing in mind many waited the extra 6 years to get their pension ended up on part benefits anyway as no decent job available at that age!

Actually Ros, the new pension of 221 takes you over the threshold. You don't have to have a private pension to stop you getting it.

If you have worked all your life and gained all the credits for a full state pension, you receive just a couple of pounds OVER the pension credit limit, so can not claim so you loose all the benefits! If you haven't worked hard you do not qualify for the full state pension so CAN claim pension credit to top it up and receive all the benefits too... Its madness!
This is the symptom of a benefits culture in this country, it needs to pay to work and be a more financial gain than claiming benefits
There are many reasons why you haven't earned a full state pension.. so you need to think before you type. And also if you have to rely on the governments state pension then you have failed to prepare for retirement, work all your life but still have to claim state pension from the government. It's your responsibility to save for retirement not the governments

Go to citizens advice and they'll fill your claims for pension credits, no need for pensioners to struggle with all those questions

Have you every spoken to a pensioner about going online to fill in a 240 questionnaire? Have you ever without the Internet found out how to claim?
This is not even a smart political move by Labour. Can you imagine the media coverage to come during the Winter months when it's being reported pensioners are freezing and even dying in some cases because they are worried about paying their heating bills.
The form is a joke - However, this payment should be available for all age groups. Youngsters cannot afford to heat their property either 😢

It's Pension Top up not Pension Credit if you're getting full State Pension you don't qualify.

Applying for this will expose your savings and investments, so you have given the government access to your most private assets. Best add vice dint bank any Spare cash, get a safe and keep it at home sum where.only you know.

They don’t need the £300 winter fuel payment benefit. Direct that money to the poorer pensioners.
The government’s plan is flawed and needs fixing but means-testing the winter fuel allowance absolutely makes sense.

Same as me then by that small amount. You should get it for health reasons absolutely you should. I am 69 and in good health fortunately but i never take it for granted.

One of the questions on the form is about savings. Many pensioners have money under the their mattresses usually to pay for their funerals do you think they are going to tell you about that and compromise themselves. Many don’t trust banks. Millions don’t trust politicians.

The one lady is correct when she said pensioners on pension credit are better off than those on state pension alone because pension credit opens you up to other things. It does not make sense to give winter fuel allowance to only those on pension credit

My 80 yr old neighbour misses out on pension credit hy a couple of pound! Yet her rent has gone up by about £4 a month, her pension increases by £1 a month so now her housing benefit amount has decreased by approx £8!!! How does this make sense?

If the government knows there are hundreds of thousands pensioners who are missing out,then if that is true why doesn't the government just give it to the pensioner's, because they obviously know who these pensioners are,or they wouldn't now the figure????

Can't understand why the Labour Party has decided to attack the pensioners just weeks before winter. The 2child cap still baffles me which labour said it would scrap and called it heinous 3years ago. What's going on?
My 84 year old aunt who has multiple health problems and who is a cancer survivor is not eligible for pension credit as she has an occupational pension. She does receive attendance allowance which pays for a carer. She also pays tax on her income. There is no reward for working and paying taxes when you can not get a bit of support when you are retired and have no way of working. If she does not have to pay income tax on her pension income, that will go a long way to help towards her heating bill.
I find it hard to believe that those in positions of power, who are capable of voicing an opinion on Keir Starmer's actions towards the elderly, remain silent. A collective voice can significantly improve the chances of addressing this winter fuel crisis, as we know that many elderly individuals may sadly lose their lives this winter.
I am not sure there is any point in complaining about the withdrawal of the winter fuel payment. Under Labour and Miliband, there will not be any power to supply anyway so non of us will be able to heat our homes!

The UK’s pensioners are one the lowest paid in Europe all voted for by the rich in parliament. Maybe we could get rid of the House of Lords where they each get £360 a day plus subsidised food and drink. Just a thought…
This BS everyone I know, all retired, know the rules, and that they cannot claim pension credit or cannot be bothered filling in a massively complicated form so don't bother, Starmer and his cohort are being extremely disengenous, they disgust me.

Why should pensioners have to go cap in hand begging for extra cash. Pensioners are treated appallingly in the uk after working for up to 50 yrs they have the worst pension in the western developed world. Pay a decent pension so that they can live out the rest of their lives in comfort and security.
The freedom pass is valued at £3 thousand a year, the lone person council tax reduction is worth £1 thousand. Many people are looking at losing over £4 thousand this year.
My 92 year old mother falls just outside the threshold and also the triple lock pushes her into the tax band so she is now taxed on the inflation increase which has now made her £10 per week worse off.
243 questions over 24 pages with a further 24 page guide. If you get 1 question wrong it is rejected.
I've been trying to get a simple self assessment tax form from the government for months.
Phone failed, on line appln rejected, visit to local office, what level of intelligence do their receptionists have,? that failed, nothing but negative responses.
It took me 11 years to get a correction to my sons birth certificate.

Firstly, people are not receiving the support you might assume. No one seems to care for those who live alone; their families often neglect them
I’ve never received it due to the government setting the limit just under the full state pension (£3). Worked all my life full time had 46 full NI years but paid on 35yrs only. The rest of my contributions just disappeared.
Also a Waspi woman, so all of my savings went when I was severely injured at 60yrs old. Last year I kept my heating reduced to 3hrs per day which caused damp issues in my house. This winter I am setting my thermostat to 15 to at least help with the damp cold house.
Apply for pensions credit fill in 250 questions - and be made feel like a criminal.
It appears that the new Govt had already planned this 230 pages form before it entered No 10.
Many elderly individuals and disabled who are eligible would probably not claim because of IT issues , lengthy forms which would be impossible to complete .
