Seriously when he said "And that's the story" I was waiting for him to say "Psych it's even more screwed up" my mind is blown just because it seemed way more tame!
@@acspectator8636 the Mulan remake is the straw that broke the camel’s back. Alice and Cinderella aren’t bad in development terms, even if they are bad, but the Mulan one takes the cake for being insulting, both externally and internally.
First time the film is more messed up than the origin.

@@ScooterinAB I guess that’s why they retold the story to remove any mention of Jim Crow, and also downgrade Timothy’s role, given how he told the role that’s originally for a smaller bird.
The part when dumbos mom was locked up and cradled him got me messed up at age 5.
I still cry during that scene.

When you grow up and realize animals being abused in circuses is all too real.
That scene right there is what made me dislike Dumbo.😢
Fun fact: the psychological effect that Timothy the mouse uses to convince Dumbo he can fly with the feather is called “the placebo effect”.
Basically the feather doesn’t do anything. But because Dumbo believes the feather helps him fly, that gives him the confidence to do it. He always had the ability but lacked the confidence and impetus to try.
I cried when he is being rocked by his mom while she's cadged and the song is playing in the background.

His mom being put away is honestly the sad reality we live in instead of teaching our kids and punishing our kids when doing something to an animal the animal gets put down for doing what it's programmed to do

Sarah Smith I’m not saying animal abuse is ok but it’s ok to kill them if needed like for food and stuff, god made us with more of a purpose then what animals have. If an animal hurts a human you have every right to defend yourself because humans are more important than animals so like in the movie they had every right to lock dumbos mom in jail because she was hurting another human. It’s just the right thing to do. And I should not have called you a dumbass I apologize for that. But we humans are superior to other forms of life. No question about it

I don’t even think the book is messed up at all. Different, maybe even weird (and cute) in terms of Dumbo being hung up on a clothesline by his ears to dry, but not messed up

I literally cry every time I watch Dumbo. Plus, the story about his mom is absolutely heartbreaking, and as I got older and learned about animal abuse in the circus so that just made it even sadder. Elephants are probably one of the worst treated animals in the world
2:25 no Timothy didn't take Dumbo for a drink to cheer him up, he took Dumbo to see HIS MOTHER, Dumbo started balling his eyes out(like most of us)at his mother's lullaby and when he had to leave, ultimately leaving him with hiccups. That is when Timothy took him to get water to help with it

One of my all time favorites. I also used to sing Baby Mine to my kids at bedtime when they were little. It still means a lot to them.

Well at least this story didn't end with Dumbo dying. So many stories end with the main character dying

The first time he said „Yeah that be $10“ I thought he was kidding ans laughed, but when he was like „They needed to pay another 10 bugs, but this time in cash” I was like: what?! XD
$10 sounds about right, if not generous… (in 1939, that equates to just under $180 today.)

Dumbo did save Disney because after both Pinnochio and Fantasia flopped, Walt Disney decided that Dumbo should have a short plot, and after Dumbo was a success at the box office, Disney was a hit once again... until Bambi flopped.

Dumbo is very close to heart. His story sounds like the stories of so many people who overcame their disabilities/disorders. :~( Being born different, made fun of for being different, made mistakes due to the difference, and then using ones difference in a positive way, because no one else has that ability. Such an inspiring story. Thumbs up for picking an awesome Disney char. Elsa and the Disney Princesses and Princes got nothing on Dumbo. He earned his keep. So bad he is overlooked. I recall having his plush as a little girl. So sad he was thrown away by mom. I was only able to save a dino plush because he went with me to school. :~( Losing Dumbo plush traumatized me. I do hope that the new live action film will reproduce the plush... for me to get him again.
this is my grandma's favorite disney movie EVER. She saw it in theatres as a kid.

I just found this channel and I dig what you are doing here. While some of the themes are dark, the way you speak and your voice is soothing. It make these videos informative but not traumatic when my childhood ignorance about these stories dies.

Dumbo was always one of my favorites, but there was always something about it I found weird, the bullying! Having been bullied for most of my childhood, I can totally relate to Dumbo. But in our age of political correctness, if you have a problem with someone, you keep it to yourself, and any mention of your problems is "just a misunderstanding." But seeing a time and place where insulting someone to their face is not only accepted, but defended, it freaking weird!

Dumbo is the cutest little elephant ever!! didn't know that it was actually a book before it became a movie. yes the animated movie made me cry because he was separated from his mama. at least it has a happy ending.

I have never heard anyone say this depressing trainwreck of a movie was one of their favorites. I remember being thoroughly traumatized by this at the age of five.

This is very odd; I try liking your video, goes to my like playlist, but when I play the video again my like is no longer existant but still is in my like playlist. I try this w other vids and had similar outcomes, but the older vids I liked dont have this problem and still show I liked them. Its frustrating when I, a viewer, am trying to show content creators, youtubers, etc. that I really enjoy their content. Pls do know I try multiple times to like this vid but still shows I didnt hit the like button

maybe, oddly the unliking and ect. happened only on my phone, not on my pc. Came on my pc, doesnt have that problem.

I just discovered your channel and it’s very cool so far. Dumbo is certainly an under appreciated character. I like him more than some other people do and it’s nice to hear other people give him praise. The movie is very creative and has great Messages about friendship and trust. I also think that the movie stands out for not using “Magic” as a key story element like so many Disney movies do. Great job with sharing your knowledge of the original story. I look forward to catching up more with your channel and videos!
Yeah, unfortunately, Fantasia, my favorite Disney movie, didn't do that well at the box office on first release, so that was at least one of the reasons Dumbo was made.
I was a little surprised to hear that Dumbo didn't want to see his mother after the elephant pyramid disaster in the original story, I guess considering that the heartbreaking scene where he sees his mother in solitary confinement is kind of a big deal in the movie. LOL But I can understand that he'd probably just want to be away from everyone for a while. I liked Red the Robin, and the owl professor, as much as I like Timothy Mouse, I wish they made it into the movie, too.
I absolutely love seeing all of Dumbo's haters get their comeuppance! You know, proves that there's justice in this world after all, feels good. LOL Though if I were Dumbo, I'm not gonna lie, I'd still be kinda pissed off at them, since the only reason they started being nice to him was when they saw they could use him for his ears. It's like, you couldn't show a baby elephant love regardless, you "love" him only when you can exploit his gift? What a bunch of assholes, they should love him anyway! I am glad for at least Dumbo that his ears did serve a great purpose, but still, that's my two cents on that.

Lets hope the new Dumbo movie doesn't shy away from the fact that the circus is hell on earth for these animals. At least the old one showed that circus life is tough and the abuse of the workers (as in when Jumbo tries to defend her baby and is whipped and chained.)

I think it's great how any bullied child can relate to this story & through it gain the confidence to "fly" in their own way. I do agree about Jim Crow's name though, no need!!!

I can't believe it! Dumbo is also my favorite movie from Disney, and I remember watching it dozens of times a day when I was a little child since I was a huge elegants fan and when I rewatched it again now that I am 17 yrs old I finally understood how sad and though this movie was, something I never noticed as a kid. Again you made an awesome video and I can't wait to see the live action movie this year, Disney better not ruin it!
