    I really don't know how people can make money out of buying/selling guitars. There's more supply than demand, so every time I sold one of my guitars it was always at a loss/below market price, or else no takers.

    • @JayceAllanGuitar
      @JayceAllanGuitar  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Same. I've made money on about (quite literally) 3 or 4 guitars in the past 2 or 3 years that I've been regularly buying and selling. You would have to buy the guitars at a super discounted price in order to flip them and make an actual profit. I think most of the actual guitar shops on Reverb are selling new gear. Even Sweetwater has started a used gear selling site similar to Reverb. So yeah, the used stuff is out there...tons of it.

      It's extremely hard right now for sellers in many, many markets. It's especially hard if your trying to buy and sell to make a little cash. What has helped me is I started buying up every little cheap practice amp I can buy $40 or less. Then I pair the amp with a guitar and a cheap 10ft cord with 3 picks. That combo has made a world of difference in my sales. Are they great record breaking sales? No but its definitely keeping my small business flowing during this buyers market.

      If you always buy used and buy it at the right price, you can get your money back out of it and put it towards trying something new. Making a profit? No, but if you’re smart it can be a self funded hobby.

      Depending on the person who's buying them if they are before 2018 they have real rosewood fingerboards some people like those a lot better than all this new wood and materials that the guitars made of cheaper more inconsistent materials some people are purest and they will buy a lot of used that were before 2018 before the sites treaty

    I sold a $500 guitar off ebay last month, shipping was $114 (and that was the cheapest!) I had a shipping box, but if you bought one plus bubble packing, add another $40. Minus ebay fees @15% .... and you have to factor the occasional unhappy customer that wants a return or partial refund, and ebay will side with them 90% of the time. You really need to find extremely good deals and then be prepared to hold onto a guitar for months while waiting for a buyer.

    The price of used guitars -- or anything else, for that matter -- is determined by demand for the specific brand or model. In other words, it's determined by popularity. So when you allow your purchase to be determined by resale value you are, for all practical purposes, allowing complete strangers (i.e. the market) to control your purchase. Why would you do that? It's stupid but there's a lot of it going around. The cheapest way to own a guitar (or anything else) is to buy it ONCE. And the way you do that is to buy what you truly want the first time and then use it until it's worn out.

    • @JayceAllanGuitar
      @JayceAllanGuitar  หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is if you simply want a guitar to play for simply practical purposes. But guitar players are also guitar collectors, some probably don't play all that much. And some of us like to buy and sell and check out new gear. In that case I just buy what appeals to me, whether I think I'll be able to turn around and sell it or not.

    Hi Jayce, Used guitar sales, I think the reselling of cheap used guitars is pretty much like most other things that are cheap and are trying to get sold, somethings just don't hold the value so well, but there are certain models that always seem to do well for whatever reason the masses prefer those models. A designer's name attached to something always jacks up the price and holds the price too. Maybe you should do a version of Stevie Ray Vaughan's " The Sky Is Crying" and add a twist, " I Am Crying " Just look at my tears rolling down the street, I bought a cheapo guitar, but I just can't seem to sell it cheap, I am crying, as I bought a cheapo from some guy on the street, He said it was like Buddy Guys, but now it's just hanging down by my feet, I am crying, because the tax man gets the biggest cut, Come on guys help me out here, someone please buy my Chinese Strat. There you go, something to put a smile on your face. Regards

    1 more post after finishing the video. It was great. I don't usually do Reverb so I take other people's word. I've heard "only Fender or Gibson really hold their value" so many times but you have receipts.
    I'm glad because I don't care for Fender or Gibson after having owned one of each. Not meant as shot or for debate, just personal opinion. But I love one of Fender's other companies - Charvel.
    It's weird that Charvel's MIM feels just as quality as many American Fenders but for half the price. It's all about quality standards demanded by each company, from what I've seen.
    And a lot of the $ on Fender & especially Gibson, is for name only, *in my opinion*. I like several other brands "LP" version equally as well, for leas money and less erratic QC.

    A more accurate way to tell how the used market is doing is Pawn Shops. If you live in an area with a decent population and a College you usually have a great selection. And for a good idea on Fender resale you might be surprised how little actual value they retain. They make so many models made here and in Mexico and people being so gullible they purchase new at full price. So when they go to sell they get a very small percentage on their purchase. Now some people are so lazy they won't even go Pawn hopping. They want to sit on their phone or computer and browse in air conditioned comfort and buy online.

So half what I paid for it, is still better than nothing. The Fender MIM Start cost me $688. Sold it for $500. After fees, shipping (around $40). I made just over $400. Very interesting topic, what is Reverb's cut on the guitars and how many videos are you able to get out of a guitar? Because if you do a review of a guitar, you can get one video and one short and then if you modify the guitar you can get one video and one short. The interesting thing about resell value is that electronics have an even steeper decline in value such as keyboards and portable recording studios.

    • @JayceAllanGuitar
      @JayceAllanGuitar  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Reverb takes a little over 8%. They charge 5% of the sale, and a 3.19% + $0.49 payment processing fee. They cap the sales fee at $500, so if you sell really expensive items, you don't pay more than $500 (plus payment fee). Ebay is right around the same for musical instruments, they changed their fee structure for musical instruments a long time ago to compete with Reverb. I can get a couple videos out of a guitar. I usually do the "review" and then can go back and do a more complete audio test, or shoot it out against another guitar. I did do quite a few videos with the Squier Debut. I find that guitar pedals, audio interfaces, mixers, etc. don't hold their value very well.

    It is possible to make good money flipping gear but you'd really better know your stuff.
    You have to know what you're looking at and what it's actually worth on the market. Then, the only trick is to buy below market value. It's pretty simple.
    Pro tip: never ever pay for "upgrades". If anything, those supposed upgrades actually devalue the guitar regardless of how expensive they were as installed. Upgrades are garbage as far as resale goes.
    Guitar Center used page is an absolute goldmine. I find stuff on there selling for a fraction of what it's actually worth.
    Often it's something that's mislabeled or misidentified by the staff.
    I've seen $1500 dollar guitars listed for $300. $400 pedals listed at $80 and so on and so forth.
    The other place to potentially clean house is estate sales. That's where the real gems are as long as you have the intestinal fortitude to work over a grieving family.
    But hey, that's what you gotta do to win at this game. Otherwise, have fun sucking hind tittie and losing money.

    Interesting topic; I subbed as well to help out. I buy and sell guitars because it's just basically a hobby for me. I'm just like everyone else, I get something and not too long after, the luster fades and then it's on to the next best thing. With a little care, your hobby will at least sustain itself, and you get to play with a lot of different gear. You just won't get rich or make a living doing it.

      I did another video on this exact topic and basically you need to hold on to an instrument for about 10, 20, 30 years in order to sell it for more than you paid for it. Definitely depends on the brand and model. Sometimes you might get lucky like I did with the Tom DeLonge strat! Good hearing from you.

      Reverb will take right around 8% of the total sale. In my experience you lose between 25% and 50% of the new price on gear, even in mint condition. I would at least do a search for the make and model of your bass on Reverb to see what they are going for. If you could get $800 for it, it might be worth it for you. In a case like this, I would be willing to walk away with $500 in my pocket, but I can handle taking a loss.

    This is the first time I've seen you and I didn't watch the entire video, just the beginning. Because I have stuff I gotta do. But I wanted to leave a like and comment because I support people trying to do stuff like you. I did want to leave a piece of advice, that I hope you will try, that might help you. At least from what I gathered from what I watched. You should start emailing, writing, and contacting companies, any and every company, and tell them what you are doing, and ask them to send you gear to demo, and then you can send it back. In some cases, you might do a contest to give the hear away, because it's all about advertising. These companies see TH-camrs as advertisers and that is how you have to frame your requests. Things like give aways, draw more audience. Now, most, if not all, at first will probably turn you down. Don't let it dishearten you and keep trying. Don't take no for an answer. Maybe demo something in a video from a company and in your request, send them a link for that demo video. Also don't be afraid to advertise yourself all over the web with links to your vids. Backlinking is a proven technique that works, but thats a suggestion for another time. Hahaha anyway, if they turn you down, keep requesting from other companies. Big and small. New and old. And just because one tells you no, doesn't mean stop. Contact them again later. The more you aggravate them, the chances go up they will work with you. And the more your numbers go up, crowd, likes, engagements, the more likely and the more often they will work with you. And the more they work with you, the more likely your numbers will keep going up. If you have old videos with good numbers, send that link to the company of what ever the video was about. And diversify. Do all kinds of gear. Variety is the spice of life. And just keep making content about what ever you can. The more you make, the more people will see it. The more people see it, the higher you rise in the youtube algorithm. This is where backlinking will help you. Not just with TH-cam, but all search engines. And the more likely companies will work with you, which means the more likely your numbers keep raising and when the circle of life music from the jungle king. See what I am getting at. And how much work is it to write a letter or email and don't even be afraid to call. These companies spend most of their money on advertising. And every video you make, unlike a commercial, will be there until it's taken down, show up in searches, and keeo workibg for them all for the price of shipping. Which is part of the sales pitch you should mention when requesting. Make them see the light and want it. And later, they will start offering to pay you and get sponsorships. You should make a goal to write an email or something to at least 5 to 10 different companies, every day. Dedicate at least half an hour to it, every day. It will pay off my man. And what ever haooens, don't give up. I hope you try my advice, it will work. Quantity helps alot, but if you can avoid it, never sacrifice quality. Good luck .

      @@dcarlisle123 let me ask you a question. Would this comment be more to your liking. I watched five minutes of your video before I got tired of the pathetic attempt to ask people to help you and beg for help. (I mean, I could throw in a lot more just to show a point) And the boring atmosphere of the overall aesthetic. Before I decided to leave because I got shit to do, you know, life and all, and leave an asshole comment propping up my little ego, because it's the only way I can find self confidence and feel superior. By going around being a dick and leaving negative comments about people who are trying to make it and achieve a goal of dream. Because I don't really believe any of that crap I just said. It was all negative, just like what you did. And only insecure people who feel bad about themselves act that way. Be a man and go out and talk to someone like that to their face. Grow a pair instead of doing it online where you know you don't have to look at the person face to face. I make it rule in my life, because I don't have to do that to feel good about myself, having confidence in myself and all, to not act like a jack ass on the Internet. Going around saying negative things to people I don't know. Which I'll forget about five seconds later, just like you did, until you get a notification about my reply anyway. But you can bet when the people you talk down, don't forget about it five seconds later. But then, that is your goal, isn't it? That's why people like you are called trolls. It's one of the reasons suicide rates have gone way up. 12 of my friends have committed suicide. Not all because of people like you, but it sure did play a huge roll in it. So I make an extra special effort not be like people like you, because I don't need to, and I think about my actions before I do them. You know, like a mature adult, and not a grown man with the mind of ten year old. Now, your gonna play it off and act like everything I just said isn't true. That you don't go around saying negative things to people you don't know, just to feel good about yourself, but deep down, you know it's true. And if this guy is happy with his 68 likes and doesn't want to increase that, fine. I guess I'm just a prick for wanting to see him succeed and offering advice I know for a fact works. Becuase 1. I know how things like the Internet works, and people like you, don't, not saying this guy doesn't, but you definitely don't, which is why you wouldn't make it trying, and 2. I know people who do it. And it took me less than two minutes to write this book. Because you know, I can type. A skill thats not really that hard to learn. But learning is hard, isn't it...awwww. I don't like to go around talking down to other people. But I have zero problem doing it to those who ask for it. I'm 100 percent positive this guy wants more than 68 likes. I gave him solid advice on how to beat the search engines and TH-cam algorithm. Do you even know what that is? If you do videos like this, you better learn, or you're always gonna be a bottom feeder. And he plainly laid out he had problems getting items to make videos about. I gave him solid advice of one way he can do that, besides asking people in a round about way to send him things. Have a good one now. Enjoy my book.

    Cool topic.
    I found the shipping cost and the hit from Reverb taking their slice to be pretty invasive.
    I really lost out. On a guitar selling for $200-$400, is there enough money to make a profit given the above penalties? I’d love to hear how you work that out if you're able to. I could use the advice.
    I’m betting the cheap guitars sell without a problem, but I was wondering if the profit margin is a loss?
    Sometimes I feel like with a top-dollar guitar, there’s just more money to play with. I know with me man..
    If Im gonna buy a cheap guitar... Im not really gonna care If I buy it for under $200 enough to search for a deal on an already outrageously cheap guitar.
    So yes the cheap guitars will sell but do you make a profit doing so I guess is the question. My local UPS wanted to charge me $100 to ship the guitar. Reverb wanting 14 percent as well.. That eats the profit pretty handily when the entire value of the guitar is say $190?

    • @petersouthwell5971
      @petersouthwell5971 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      MIM Players are great guitars, but they come with no setup. That's how they make them cheaper while touting the specs they mention.
      Take 10 guys earning $20 an hour, for example. If they're spending 10 minutes setting up the guitar versus the 2 hours it really takes, that’s a huge cost-saving in production.
      A MIM guitar is basically the same parts with the word "MIM" instead of "USA" painted on the neck, minus the setup. For someone who can do a setup, MIM is a great way to save a grand. "Cheap" means under $1,000. In the Fender world, they’re really trying to steer you toward $2,000 before they're willing to do the setup at the factory.
      By the way, I like the MIM because I can do a setup, and I feel I end up with a guitar that’ll compete all day long with the "American" versions. (Quotes because creating the parts in Mexico, shipping them 60 miles north, and having them set up in America-for me, that’s not an "American" guitar, but that’s how the industry seems to play that tune these days.)
      Also.. Lets not miss the fact that fender is charging basically $1,000 for a setup and a an "American" decal sticker. A wee bit excessive considering a setup at a repair shop is sub $200

    • @JayceAllanGuitar
      @JayceAllanGuitar  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Reverb takes a little over 8% between seller fee and payment processing fee. Shipping a bass guitar in a gig bag to Texas cost me around $60 a couple days ago. That guitar retailed for about $295. I think I paid $250 for it. My total "profit" was $198.53. So my loss was around $50. Which isn't too bad for me. Some people might not want to take that big of a hit. Some guitars will go for more some for less, usually the newer the guitar is, the less return you'll get on it. Older guitars that are harder to find will fetch more. Also, if you're willing to be really patient, you can list a piece of gear for what you want to get for it, and you may eventually get it. Especially if it is in mint condition and you create great product photos and a killer description. I'm not usually willing to wait more than a few weeks, I want to turn things over quick to make more room for new gear that I can review. But in my experience, across the board, regardless of make or model, expect to lose about 25% to 50% on a guitar. So that would make your $200 guitar worth about $150 to $100.

      @@petersouthwell5971 I agree. I've owned both Made in USA and MIM Fenders (and even a couple MIJ) and they're all the same. And now with CNC manufacturing, there really is no difference in build quality. I've heard people buying Custom Shop Fenders and still had to do a setup. Fender charges almost 2 grand for a USA Strat because they can. Why do you think they have so many signature models and anniversary editions and things like that? Because they know people will pay more for them. Same with Gibson, the Epiphones are basically the exact same guitar, maybe a tad bit cheaper electronics. But people will argue all day long that there is a significant difference between a MIA and MIM Strat.

    I think it's funny. I'm laughing at the young folks and this insane guitar boom. All started by that stupid Rock Band the game. Literally every single kid is a guitar player now? I don't think you realize just how many garbage guitars there are out there. Cheap crap guitars that are quite nice with shit hardware. Guitars in the $100-$300 range. The problem is market saturation. The problem you have are these makers putting out a competitive product for $200 on Amazon. Millions of those new guitars are selling all over the world while the used market stagnates. We're so saturated it's basically a buyers market. The sellers are selling themselves out of business. The problem is most of the people buying guitars aren't musicians. They're hobbyist dreamers that will end up putting the guitar in the closet or trying to sell it on the used market. I've given away 2 guitars in the last year to friends kids. It's almost not worth the trouble to sell a $500 guitar used. Listing is easy. Then you have to deal with a hoard of people trying to rip you off. You have to relist the item 2-3 or more times to sell it. For cheap guitars with little margin it's not worth my time. I have a ton of nice stuff I'm keeping that I know would sell quickly because it's not garbage. The whole music gear industry is bottoming out. How much more new gear do we need when we have so much used shit out there? We need innovation and new products and ideas to replace the old but the old sticks around and clutters the place up. I have 3 old guitars made of parts and a pile of necks that I plan on burning in my yard. Used guitars are over. Used gear is great but the amount of garbage out there is insane. They're all going to end up in the landfill because nobody will ever buy them or play them.
