  • Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #393
    Date of Adventure: 1/28/20
Exploring some abandoned tunnels way up in the San Gabriel mountains, just north of L.A., that were blasted through solid granite back in the 1960s to provide an escape route for Cold War-era Los Angelenos in the event that the Russkies dropped a nuke on the L.A. area. The plan was to build a road all the way across the mountains from the city out to the desert...but funding ran out (and Cold War paranoia subsided) before the project was finished, so now the tunnels are just sitting up there empty and abandoned!

I have been high a few times in those tunnels back in the 70s, cool for you to bring back my youth and to remember friends that are now gone that was with me in those tunnels. It was a different time then in California , that you will never see again. Sad very Sad.

And, the arched metal "roofs" on the ends of the tunnel run through the fracture zone to keep the tunnel from collapsing. They aren't needed in the middle part because that's solid (unfractured) rock.

Your "century" plant is actually a yucca. The center stalk is where it blooms with white flowers once every several years, but more often under ideal conditions.

Thank you girl! I lived in Santa Ana from 1960-1976 and traveled all over similar terrain and I can tell you that I never heard anything about any tunnels, much less that there was an escape from a nuclear bomb going off in LA. Interesting, because there was already a northern route through Palmdale and another one through Cajon Junction, so they already had an escape route. This must have been for privileged folk, like some of those operation paperclip scientists that were placed in the aerospace industry, which was extensive in that area. Northrop, Lockheed, MCDonald Douglas, General Dynamics, Westinghouse, etc. Then you have the Jet Propulsion Labs 10 miles from Azusa. That's one of the most sinister establishments on the planet. Very very interesting. Cheers!

There is a great bicycle trail at the West fork. Just before the bridge. Goes to Cogswell Dam. Slight uphill grade to the dam. Also followed the river. There are pools and waterfalls and fire newts and fish. Beautiful ferns growing from the cliffs. Make a day trip and check it out. The bike trail is the service road to Cogswell dam. Enjoy

You never cease too amaze me ! Whitman was a Englishman with an operettic scale, who chose the lyrics of country and went big for a while and lingers. He captured the inner depths of people just like you do . The people didn't know what they were getting, they just knew they liked it. WOW ! I was in Europe when the Soviets invaded . It no doubt had a major bearing on my life... Impressive...…………………………. !

Los Angeles County in the 50’s had a lot of aerospace companies and Lockheed had their Skunk Works program so LA was a prime target for the Russians. In school in the 60’s we had nuclear bomb drills and we had to get under our school desks. Like that would save us. Kind of a joke. A friend of mine had a bomb shelter in his backyard. He lived in Malibu. We also had air raid sirens the city would test once or twice a year. I lived in the San Fernando Valley.

I was born in '50, fun wasn't it! During my working days on a factory fire dept. in a plant with major defense operations, our semi-joke was that if an attack alert came along whoever was at the firehouse was to make sure there was fresh coffee ready, and those who were out and about would try to make it back for the last cup, ( no time to go for doughnuts)and we could all turn to vapor together, cup in hand. The attack likely to be sub-launched, with the coast less than 200 miles away, perhaps 10 min. or so at best.I remember in school. the drills of hiding under desks, traveling displays of fallout shelters, and lots of other cheery stuff!

Great video ,loved it ! Thanx for singing to us again ( awesome! ) what could be better than a operetta snip from Carmen, and the wonderful Slim Whitman's Indian Love Call ? (Mars Attacks! is great ) I was raised in L.A. 1966-1985 (Paramount-Downey area) , and used to go to the San Gabriel mountains all the time to camp, hike, get stoned, and just have fun in Angeles National Forest ,it was beautiful. But i did not know that these tunnels even exsisted until now (sure glad that a Red-Russkie bomb didn't vaporize me) ,it's just another example of stuff you can learn from watching a wonderhussy adventure, having fun and learning ,what a concept. By the way, nice 'tree boner',, haa! The by-gone race of beings that wrote Love in the tunnel have been discovered, they are called Hippies. One time i took shrooms in those mountains and went down to Azusa to go to the old A&W restaurant there to get a root beer float, man, that was the one trippy, delicious ,groovy, cool ,refreshing experience that i'll never forget. Thank you for the wonderful vid, and stay safe. Bob.G.

The second tunnel is less than 2 miles in a straight line from the "Bridge to Nowhere". The trail to the bridge starts at the end of East Fork Road -- the same road that Shoemaker Canyon Road begins from. I hiked in to the Bridge to Nowhere twice in the 1960s, before it became a tourist attraction and bungee-jumping location, and I lived along East Fork Road in the late 1960s while Shoemaker Canyon Road was still being constructed.

Another golden state boondoggle, at least it makes a decent trail and allowed inmates a chance to really break some rocks. The "century plant" is called a Whipple Yucca (Yucca whiplei).I live at the same elevation 2k ft and we have them all around where I live. I worked at an outdoor education school here in CA and we had to learn the local plants to be able to tell the kids. The Whipple Yucca takes years to bloom and then they die. So you will see some in bloom and then nearby the dead corpses of others.

Ah, home :) I worked (forest service) and lived in the Angeles National Forest (Wrightwood) all my life. (and for years I lived on a horse ranch located at the 27500 (block)area of Largo Vista rd (in the same forest at Mile High), which you talked about. I hope while you were there, you checked out the "Bridge to Nowhere, a little to the southeast of your location at the tunnels, in East Fork... Very cool video :) --Made me miss home.

The station wagon with the wood paneling on the sides. The car that's still in the crate.

Great video as always! You missed the old cabin. About a 1/4 mile more up the trail. Also that trail spurs into the john muir trail further on. And where the fern and moss is? Usually a spring feeds it, depending on snow conditions, you will see those thruout the mountains. Other secrets of that area were in your video, but not gonna mention what it was.

Yes it's a structural thing. The steel structure is where the rock was not stable enough to support itself...... The plant is called Yucca. In the 50's in grade school there were monthly tests of the air raid system. We had to all climb under out desks facing away from windows. Better than doing nothing I guess but not much.

In case it's important, the rock through which the tunnels were blasted isn't granite, but a group of "metamorphic" rocks. They were originally sedimentary rocks (sandstone, shale, etc.) that were laid down under the sea, then lifted and bent upward by the force of the tectonic plates pushing together. The pressure generated considerable heat, and the rocks underwent metamorphosis into what they are today. You can see the angled layers of the rock strata in your video.
