Not gonna lie, the "Is he leaving? He's leaving WITH the hostages?!" part got me laughing so hard I had to pause the video and dry my tears! That's EXACTLY the sort of dumb thing I would do in this situation, wich proves that I should NEVER be around any sort of negotiation.
I have to say that after playing hostage negotiator Crimewave quite a few times, and running into bad luck every now and then, it was part of the drama of the story. It wasn’t the fact that I had bad luck. It was the fact that the doctor went crazy or one of the cops that was assisting me was choking on a doughnut and we had to stop and save her and meanwhile the abductor escaped. Just a brilliant game
Seeing this, I am surprised you never covered Final Girl, the spiritual (and imho greater) succesor with its own great vibe. would love to see a video about that one here.
Adding a like and comment because screw lawyers and by proxy, maybe even Stan Bush. What a waste of resources. This review is packed with so much humor that a small snippet of "The Touch" barely even registers. Anyway, copyright law is far beyond nonsense and board game reviews are sweet. Long live SU&SD.
"Stop, put the dice down!" "No, put the dice down!!" "PUT THE DICE DOWN!!!!" Love this bit with Quinns the reviewer scolding Quinns the player to make a point about the core theme of the game. Brilliant!! Nobody combines information and humor like SU&SD.
I only just now realized that in the intro, when Quinns keeps messing with the audience's expectations about "The coolest job to have", he's literally doing the same thing as the ice cream vendor he describes. Woooop! Ha, ha, ha!
Quinns blows kissy faces at a game and now it's sold out across the world. Always the way. People say they'd love to see a copy of tomorrow's newspaper. I'd love to see the upcoming games SUSD will be recommending so I can get them at a fair price.
just managed to get hold of the 'Crime Wave' box and the game is slippery but entertaining, twice now I've managed to save all the hostages only to realise I don't have quite enough time to deal with the hostage-taker too... You may only get 4 criminals in the first box, but I can see this keeping occupied for a while! Excellent recommendation!...
The end game is the only thematic failing for me. If running low on terror cards, it can be a better strategy to allow hostages to die because if any hostages remain in the pool, I fail. And if I eliminate the abductor, save every hostage but one and am unlucky enough not to get that final hostage rescued (because he 2nd in command will never kill the last hostage), I lose. But if I let the abductor kill the last hostage, then eliminate them I win? I realize the idea is to punish killing the abductor rather than talking them down, for thematic and gameplay reasons, but it feels odd and also some of the abductors are designed to be very hard to keep calm.
@@AlamarianJ I'm playing the base game and yeah, it feels kind of lame that I actually want a few hostages to die so I don't have to rescue them all. It sounds like this problem is kind of solved by Career mode though since that makes hostages a limited resource so you might actually want to save them all.
I just got this a few days ago and I've been thoroughly enjoying it. I won my first negotiation against Lijah with only 2 hostages killed. Then I went on to try my hand against Donna and proceeded to get thrashed, saving only 3 of the 15 hostages - she had taken an extra 3 early on. I managed to turn things around when I went up against Arkayne, losing only 2 hostages, and then swept through my 2nd negotiation with Donna by saving every hostage (including the extra 3 she had taken... AGAIN) and getting her to surrender on the last terror card before the pivotal event. Once I have a go at Edward, I figure I'll be ready to tackle the career mode.
This review made this sound pretty popping, so I went to see if I could get it (in the UK) and absolutely nowhere has it, the last reprint of the base game seems to have been 2017, so it was second hand or nothing. Luckily I was able to find someone in France and even with postage, got it, miraculously, for around RRP in total (£27). I'm hoping they reprint Career and Crime Wave again soon as I'd love to get my hands on them.
Great review, I actually went to try order a copy of this after watching and, sods law, it sadly appears as though it's between production runs. This is firmly on my list now though. Keep up the excellent content.
Can anyone explain to me why I just can't stop re-watching this video? I've already bought and played the game (love it, waiting for expansions to arrive) but I'm still re-watching this over and over...
I love the joke about Turkish ice cream men because it's kinda meta because we were all expecting you to say hostage negotiator but you switched it out at the last second. But also it's completely true those men are the best, I think all countries should have national holidays in their honor.
Never owned the actual game but I did play it via the Android App. It works really well in that format, a fun game to play in between events in your day or to knock out a round before bed.
I’ve been eyeing this game since I started working at a FLGS at the beginning of the year (more of a ttrpg/40k person just TRYING to get into board games but have no friends and just discovered solo games) picked it up yesterday. Well, the base game….. Definitely thinking I have to get crimewave and the abductor packs because I really want to play career. What an awesome concept!!!

If you enjoyed this one Van Ryder also makes a game called Detective City Of Angles which is also extremely well done. Their products are well worth the price compared to most of the kickstarters that I have seen lately.
Wow, I guess introducing a small clip of a forgotten 80s song to a young audience of thousands has really hurt the song financially. I think the reference should be editted out completely, less it keeps negatively impacting the song and its rights holder.
I know the SUSD doesn't really play old-school style wargames, but I hope someday they'll check out Gregory M. Smith's solitaire games like The Hunters, Interceptor Ace, etc. Despite being niche in the wargame market, they really have this awesome, tense feel while being historically accurate, and also while have the simulation aspects distilled into an easily digestible core. Fingers crossed!
The Hunters is an awesome game. I put on the Das Boot soundtrack and play it with my wife. Given how much Quinns loves Capt Sonar, it’s a definite game to try.
I find it strange that Quinns didn't like Nemo's war but liked this game. I'm completely on the opposite. This game is purely based on luck. Getting the more powerful cards which seem to help you mitigate some of that luck is extremely hard and luck-based because they are very expensive, and even when you get them, they are discarded on the turn you use them and may be completely worthless if you fail the roll, rendering the early effort to get them in the first place (which was already luck-based) useless. Then on top of that you have to deal with the terror deck, which can completely destroy the game in one or two cards. Nemo's war also uses dice for everything you do, but offers a whole palette of tactical and strategic choices everywhere.
Had the same experience with Nemo's War as Quinns. Managed to get through a single game though, but the gameplay felt more like a continuation of the setup. I don't think solo games are lost to me, but definitely need it to be quicker into the fun. Otherwise I'll just go play a solo video game instead.
From the publisher: "Our base game reprint is literally sitting in California waiting to get on a train (so frustrating!) as it has been for weeks now. So if stock gets tight and you guys get questions, just let them know the restock is coming soon, errr I think."
Wow, my experiences were totally different. While I adore Nemo's War, I just couldn't stand Hostage Negotiator. I found it dull and too random. To each their own.
This is a re-upload with new music due to the reach of Stan Bush's copyright lawyers. Truly, they have the touch.
Darn. I guess they don’t have the power as I ended up streaming that music after the other video because of the reference. Either way, good review.
Failed opportunity to substitute it with a crappy kazoo cover
Tbh when I watched the original review I was like "There is a brave amount of this song being played"
Couldn't you negotiate some deal?
@@PaweFiga He did, but they killed all the hostages...
It's never easy when it's time for the negotiator to face the music

The Touch is literally my favourite song of all time as I loved Transformers: The Movie as a kid and still do.

I'm so early, the hostage wasn't even taken at that point.
If i'm playing and i say "i'll go ahead and let these people die because i still have enough to win", i'm not sure i'm a very good hostage negotiator
The end game is the only thematic failing for me. If running low on terror cards, it can be a better strategy to allow hostages to die because if any hostages remain in the pool, I fail.

Which would SUSD recommend -- Hostage or Final Girl?
It took me about 17 minutes to realize it was Hostage Negotiator: Career and not Hostage Negotiator: Korea.

Great video, even though I spent half the time staring at that glass of water sitting on the edge of the table.
The Tim Robinson touch is sooooo good 🤩

Have you played Final Girl? Which one would you prefer
This video makes me want to buy this game.
This seems really cool but its so expensive 😢
Luckily you can just buy the base box and have a full, fun game to play before you decide you want to expand it.
On top of the $150 there is also another $100 for postage and tax for the UK

Do I absolutely need Hostage Negotiator Crime Wave if all it is just a core box but designed to hold onto more expansions?
Crime Wave has different abductors, conversation cards, and terror cards than the original base set. So getting both adds to the variety available.
I think I would love if there was a coop way of playing.
There is no reason two people couldn't play this together.
