I got my Recon Tanto in 1995 and it's still one of my favorite knives. Thank you Cold Steel. That thing is indestructible.

My dad told me about his that he had in service. Told me he absolutely loved the knife and that it was his favorite. I’ve recently gotten into knives and finally saved up enough to get us both one. So happy to finally get him this

Jacob Allen Exactly. It is SO obvious none of them know anything about a real knife. I'm betting they can't even legally buy a knife.

When I bought this knife 12 years ago at the PX in 29 palms, it has been by my bed. From my deployment on the 31st MEU to field dressing deer last season, this knife has been by my side. Thank you Cold Steel and Lynn Thomas, for making such fantastic durable knives.

It amazes me how people can hate on a company like Cold Steel. I buy cold steel knives because they perform, and then some. I will keep buying cold steel knives until they stop being safe cutting tools at a reasonable price; I don't see that stoping anytime soon. keep up the good work CS!

I cary this knife everyday. At first I just kept it with me for a "just in case scenario", but one time I needed to pry a hub cap off to fix a flat and I scratched the black coating... I was kinda upset at first like any guy would be when you hurt a "toy". This is no toy! This blade is a throat slitting, body armor pricing, car door prying, combat knife that likes to play hard and dirty. As I said before this is my EDC knife I forget my wallet more than my Recon Tanto.

Awesome. I have several of their products, about 40. I want to add this one to the list. I EDC the Vaquero Grande everywhere. It's a 6" blade folder and it's 25 years old. It hides amazing well in plain sight. I love how Cold Steel tests their products.

I love this knife and I take it with me everywhere I go. I think this knife is the ultimate Combat/Utility knife out there!! I don't carry my Kabar as often anymore because there's quite a few weak spots with a USMC stacked leather handle Kabar and I can't find any with this knife, It's indestructible as far as I can tell, and the tip is just awesome on this Tanto. Many Tanto knife tips bend or break off, but not on this bad boy!!! A Tanto blade has to be high carbon, and that this knife is. I Love it!!!!!

I own said knife, have for 20 years and its always preformed well. From gutting fish to cutting through the rib cage of a deer. Now I've never cut big limbs from trees, or used it to punch a hole in wood, cause thats not what a knife is for. But if you want a good heavy bladed knife that will stand up to years of "normal" use this is a good knife

That's true, and as a civilian I tend to avoid coated knives for just that reason. However, if you're in a military or other combat situation, and not doing stupid crap like stabbing car doors (see video), that coating can be very beneficial. Not only will it slow down corrosion (good when you don't have the time/resources to maintain your knives), but it will shine far less than a regular blade, which is helpful if you don't want the other guy to see you from 100 feet off :P

One has its stamped letters in that are simple lined with the coating smooth, and the other has a rough coating and the stamped letters look more updated. My question I guess is when did the Carbon V's start in production and end in production? Thank for your time and patience... ☺

I plan on maintaining the ones I bought, my AK47 Folder made it thru Iraq only needing a sharpening, but after I got home the lip that assists with opening broke off. It still works fine, but I bought another for the next mission. I plan on doing some training with the training weapons, and deploying with their big brother sharp tools. I look forward to seeing how they hold up. I have had no complaints yet, and don't foresee any.. Side note: They beat the pants off the similar KaBar's I tested

I just got this and Its like a Wakizashi that I still own and bought from Japan.. but this is More Modern and Totally looks awesome :D and it does a lot of things even out doors when you need to.. not only as a self defence kit but also a small tool

  • @mtlwarrior1
    @mtlwarrior1 13 ปีที่แล้ว

@MeLlamoBradly i cant say for sure but its more likely a thru-tang. If you are familiar with the tang of a KA-BAR, that is also a thru-tang. A full tang knife has no variation between the blade and the tang, but a thru-tang is more often used in combat knives for its superior lightness, this is still an extremely strong tang, as proven by the KA-BAR, it will split wood and hold up for the long haul, but it is not as strong as a true full tang, but much stronger than a rat-tail tang

@standard1664 that's true, thanks for not making some smartass comment. I personally love the tanto design. The only thing I don't recommend with this knife is the batoning, doesn't seem thick enough or has a nice wedge. All around a great knife I think. I wonder what the difference between vg-1 and vg-10 is. Also,I think the clip test was a little rediculous.

Hi Mr Smith, thanks for the info but knives in movies are nothing more than props and like most product placement are paid. I know the movies you list. I certainly know what a Dan grade is having trained myself in JUDO. Not sure what you need to do to classify yourself as a "master hunter" although I've been a bow hunter for over 35 years. I guess I was being a bit facetious as I'm sure these are good knives but that's not because of anything American but because of the "master" knife smiths in Japan making the the main components of their (CSK) more expensive non made in China knives- with exception of the USA made models.

You do have a point. One may wonder what business the public may have with a knife favoured by people who's job it is to kill or defend others. However, remember that any knife is still just a hunk of sharpened steel. It may have fancy coatings or special materials, but it's still the same piece of technology man has used for thousands of years. If Cold Steel was selling the latest and greatest assault rifle that fired a billion rounds a minute, maybe I'd be a little concerned :P

Say Heah, I have the Recon Tango in three different steel, Although I got ripped off on E-bay on the CarbonV one and I was charged alot on a 2nd where the lines are off on one side, I use it as a beater, But beware buying on E-bay, They wouldn't back me up. But the AUSa. I teamed up with my S. O. Seal Pup Elite since both are the same steel and both are with the coated blades so they atleast match. I find the Cryo to be equal to the Zero Quench so yeah, Thumbs up to both. with my Estwings Double Bit Hatchet and my Corona 10" Curved Folding Saw, I could go on a overnighter or a few day trip knowing that I could accomplish everything I need to do. Yeah, I do bush craft things with my Recon Tango and it spans more wood when I need to baton. But that's why I bring the Estwings right ? But the whole set don't put you in the poor house divided by the years they will serve you with little effort keeping then in good condition. Yeah, I thumb up my Recon Tango, and Boohoo on E-bay and the Ding Dong Rip Off guy.

The only thing that I would've liked to have seen done differently is the same blade go from one test to another. Watching any of the videos you can see that is is a brand new blade for every different test. One blade going through all of that without stopping would be a true bragging right and worth whatever price.

I actually just got my hands on an older Carbon V Recon Tanto. It's definitely seen some action in it's time; the powder coating is somewhat scratched and worn, and the knife's edge (especially the tip) is more than a little on the rough side. How should I go about revitalizing and sharpening my new (to me) knife, and what ongoing care should I be putting into it?

Basically, the San Mai III steel is stronger and holds an edge better, and is also more resistant to rust. So, it can take some more punishment and is preferable for wet locations. If you can afford the extra $40-$50 it takes to upgrade to San Mai III, then it is quite nice.

yeah i worked for ka bar for a little while and the make a decent knife although they are not balanced knives. i like cold steel because they offer japanese laminated steel. i only buy cold steel.

Is this good for self defense over the leatherneck and the ka-bar? Is the plastic guard gonna break with time?

Упсарин Ц I have all 3 and like this one the best. Kabar makes great knives but I'm not a fan of the rat tail tang. This thing is tough. Super though. The sheath is absolutely great and high quality. Don't listen to anyone here knocking this blade. I carry it almost daily for about 5 years now. It shows some wear but it's still razor sharp and tough as ever.

It is a very tough knife and definitely a good option but there are better combat knives out there. Check out the Cold Steel OSS or the Trailmaster

Of, well then in that case you want a fixed blade knife with a very strong tip. Tantos have too fine of a tip, it will get broken, I can't look at cold steels website to give you a choice but I hope I helped.

    Hey Cold Steel!
As I saw you pierce through a German camo pattern bulletproof vest with your Recon Tanto, i once more noticed how badly it sucks that one-hand operated knives and fixed blades above 4.5 iches are prohibited here in Germany.
If you guys would think about two-hand operated versions of the Voyager series or below-4.5 inch versions of the SRK, this would be pretty awesome.
It would surely increase your market share here, which does not seem to be that great...
    Keep making awesome knives!

That would be my choice for a combat knife.

@MrMaximusi It's not an axe it's a knife they were showing its strength and if you did need to cut something like a tree it's not hard to find a small log. But regardless knife not axe, stupid comment.

both my carbon v and aus8 recon tanto came out of the box unable to shave hair. I was disappointed. Must be something to do with the profile since all my other cs knives shave arm hair out the box

All cold steel tantos are made either in the US or Japan which is a big deal because some of the best knives com from Japan and you need a license is Japan just to make a knife
