Barry (Tom Cruise from Mission Impossible, Top Gun and Rain Man) gets off his plane and gives parcels to the locals. These packages contain alcohol and firearms. Jorge (Alejandro Edda from Fear The Walking Dead and Narcos) arrives, accompanied by Don Adolfo Calero. Barry is surprised to see them there. Jorge offers Barry a deal. Barry can expand his drug trafficking empire after a deal with the Contras and the CIA.

What’s the American Made movie about?
In 1978, Barry Seal (Tom Cruise from Mission Impossible, Top Gun and Rain Man), a commercial jet pilot, smuggled Cuban cigars into the United States. He is recruited by the CIA to fly clandestine reconnaissance missions over Central America. During a mission, the Medellín Cartel asks Seal to fly cocaine on his return flights to the United States. Seal accepts and starts sending the cartel's cocaine to Louisiana. The CIA turns a blind eye to the drug trade, but the DEA tracks down Seal. To avoid authorities, Seal and his family must move to a remote town in Arkansas. The small town becomes wealthy and turns out to be the center of cocaine trafficking in the United States. Eventually, the CIA shuts down the program and abandons Seal, who is arrested. He escapes prosecution by making a deal with the White House, which wants evidence that the Sandinistas are drug traffickers. Seal manages to obtain photos that link the Medellin cartel to the Nicaraguan Sandinistas, but the White House publishes them as propaganda against the Sandinistas. Seal being in the pictures, he is arrested and the cartel plots revenge. Seal is found guilty and is sentenced to hours of community service. Finally, unable to hide from the cartel, he is shot dead by assassins. The CIA destroys all evidence linking them to Seal and continues the smuggling, but using Iran instead to deliver weapons to the Contras.

this movie does such a good job (just like Narcos) at making it seem like the dea was not apart of the CIAs operation to help with starting the drug war that's been happening for 50 years.

Drug trafficking doesn’t really happen at a meaningful level unless governments are involved. That’s what you should’ve got from this movie.

Idk why but I get discount lord of war vibes from this, as good as cruise is I dont think he can pull off the narrator role very well. At least not here.
I agree sorta. Although I can see a deliberate thematic choice. Lord of war was in a very obvious way speaking to the horrors of the black market weapons trade from the word go with the intro. American Made was more comedic and light on purpose, its more about how crazy the ride was, not so much the dark overtones. Cages voice and cadence worked extremely well in lord of war, but it would be too slow and dramatic for these scenes.
Cruise is so good in so many films, but this just seems completely generic and uninspired
