Tamiya TA-01 Project Subaru Impreza Part 2

  • Welcome to part 2 and the completion of my TA-01/2 Subaru Impreza Mexico 2004 Project.
    I decided that my beloved vintage Tamiya TA-01/2? Ford Escort Cosworth rally car was in need of a makeover - the original shell was beyond repair, but the chassis still runs like new. I have always loved the Subaru rally car looks, so I decided to fit a TT-01 Subaru Impreza Mexico 2004 body shell. Will it fit easily? What wheels and tyres should I fit? Can I use the original rally cockpit interior? How can I get rid of the solid window decals? Lots of questions - I hope you will find the answers in this video series!
    Please forgive the lack of cameraman - I filmed this second installment single-handed, but I did my best!
    I hope you enjoy the video and hope you take a look at future running videos of my renovated TA-02 Subaru!

    I like that idea of taking the film off the body only a little at a time as you do the decals. I always seem to bang my shell up putting the decals on. Everything came out really nice on yours!

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate - yeah, I have done my last few bodies like that, and it really does seem to help keep the shell protected while you thrash about trying to get the stickers right - and also, I now hate the pre-cut decals - seems like a bonus at first, until you come to apply them - they are just not trimmed close enough! Thanks for watching mate, have a good weekend!

    Absolute beauty Mark, that is a really pro job you have done on the shell - the key is all that tiresome preparation. And you said you weren't that good at painting cockpits ? Your an absolute pro bud. The whole thing looks like a factory finished XB. Top job my friend...👍.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Cosmo the magician! Thanks for your kind words - and you are right, the devil really is in the detail, and preparation is key. As for the cockpit - I rushed it all those years ago, too eager to get it running! But nowadays I tend to slow down and take my time, all down to patience really, as I'm sure you know from your figure painting! So if it's not quite right - do it again! All that said, it looks far better than I had hoped, does help that it is a beautiful body kit in the first place. Thanks again mate, enjoy your weekend!

    awesome! I had just dug out my old Tamiya as have bought a crawler, and now was reading up on converting old Tamiya to LiPo power, and came across this!!
    I have exactly the same original TA-01 58112 Escort Cosworth, and found the same Solberg Blobeye Subaru shell about 15 years back in local model shop and thought the same! I cheated though, and bought mine ready-painted and stickered, and my chassis is a lot dirtier - credit to your job!!
    I managed to find some replica Gold Speedlines as well, although they are slightly flat-spotted now. Just charging and ready to see if still works!

    I really enjoy That .The Drift in the beginning makes you want more Driving videos and I'm really looking forward to it.Hirvonen looks very good with his new helmet .And your camera work? There is nothing to complain about and certainly nothing to apologize.I wish you a relaxing and nice weekend .Both Thumps up

      Good evening to you too, my good friend! Your comments fill me with joy - it was worth doing just for a nice comment like that! Yes, the drift at the beginning is a clip from the upcoming "first run" video - I am very pleased with the footage I have got for that - just need to spend a few hours editing it into something watchable! I too am glad I chose Hirvonen for the driver as most people would choose Solberg - but I like to be a little different! I wish you and your family a relaxing and happy weekend too - enjoy! :-)

      Cheers Paul - nice comment dude - thank you. Yeah, I'm really pleased with this one, it was nice to see the tatty car in the beginning and then the difference that a good clean, new wheels and a shell can make to an old RC. To be fair, it cost a few quid, but nowhere near that of buying a complete kit. I too was surprised at how well the cockpit came out - that black spray paint from Aldi covered a lot of sins!! Thanks for watching mate - enjoy your Sunday! :-)

I would never ignore any message on purpose! Bloody tube! So yes - I agree - I can't see the point in XB, building a Tamiya is the best bit, and there are so many better specified non-Tamiya RC RTR cars at much lower prices, it does seem to defeat the object of a Tamiya! :-)

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the great comment, Chris! Yeah, I have no idea what Tamiya are thinking by blacking-out the windows on some of their body shells - it really spoils the scale looks - removing them from the Subaru was definitely the best thing I did on this project - I hope other rally car fans will see that it can be done without too much trouble, and have a go if their shell has those awful window decals.
      Haha - I reckon the old TA02 will outlast me, yeah, I reckon another 20 years is achievable! Have a great weekend mate!

    Is it a TA-02 or 01? The title says TA-01.. Anyhow.. When making the window masks.. you already got the right outline shapes. Draw the outlines on a piece of vinyl sheet, cut it out and there you have the window mask to attach it on the inside. Nice job btw.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! I originally thought it was a TA-02 after looking on Tamiya forums (it is not stated in the manual) but so many people have told me it is actually a TA-01, I changed the video title!
      The window masks - good point, well made my friend - yes I could have drawn around the window decals and then cut inside those lines to make the masks. But I only had masking tape at the time! Something to remember for the future!
