Kurata Sensei......I have watched so many of your Hogk Kong kung-fu movies!! You are a star in your own right also!! The fans of martial art action movies owe you our gratitude as well for the many exciting moments we spent watching your fast fighting action in the movies!! One movie comes to mind where you are having a fight against the star of the movie and he made you run away from him and you hid in the river. He comes looking for you but cannot find you. Yet, you come out of the water behaving like a crab. Your movements resemble the crab fighting against the start so well that we all broke out in laughter with your ingenuity. Also. your classic fight with with Jet Li as he changes to a Bruce Li kind of boxing style. What enjoyment it was to watch your many many movies. IN fact, you still look very well and should do a movie in Japan, if possible. Thank you, Sensei Kurata !! From Los Angeles, California, USA!!

That 22 minute fight with Chen Zing at the end of "Kung fu , The Invisible Fist" had people on their feet. That film played for months in the same theater. Forget the bad dubbing, the grainy stock, and reflections of the camera crew on the side of the car door. Kurata and Zing were a lethal combo who brought out the best in each other.
Sensei Kurata is one of the most memorable legends of Martial arts cinema. Impeccable speed and execution of his techniques, handsome, and STILL has perfect hair! It would have been something if he got to do a movie with Bruce Lee. In spirit he got to do it with Jet Li in Fist of Legend which was a remake of Chinese Connection. Heroes of the East remains one of my most watched Kung Fu movies ever with the epic end duel with Gordon Liu.
Happy 75th Birthday today , Sensei Kurata. March 20, 1946 You, sir, continue to be one of the most charismatic and lethal fighting exponents in modern times. Your on screen presence combined with a total arsenal of talent and the crisp textbook delivery of techniques made your work frightening and fun to watch. Bruce Lee studied you as well. He would have been foolish not to. I know I sure as heck did. Lee learned from people he respected and you were "it" in those days. And for you to still have respect for the man's work amid so many haters you knew and we know now makes you humility's total package. Thats all we could ask from anyone is to be real. And your contribution to the craft will always reach past the footlights.

Maybe he was too young being six years Lee's junior. Maybe Shaw Brothers wouldn't lend him out to do ANYTHING for Golden Harvest. Lee had his eye on Shintaro Katsu ( Ogami Ito, the blind swordsman in the Shogun Assassin movies) but Shintaro wasn't about to lose his "hero" status by losing a fight to a china man in any movie. So they got a baseball player to play Zuzuki. I know one thing. The choreography would have been different. Very different. Kurata's use of weapons especially the tonfa? Against Lee's nunchaku? Good grief.
