    Gotta say, mine came out of the box with no bladeplay, perfect centering, buttery open action and drop shut closing action. This is a beautiful Spyderco knife. For me, it just fits well in every way. Perfect in the hand and slides in and out of both my pocket and my knife holster. It is, as Nick says, a funny knife. But a really nice one. When I first took it out of the box, it felt large and a bit heavy in the hand. Then I spydie flicked it open and it all made sense. Perfect balance and sits perfectly in the hand. Great fit and finish. It has really stunned me. Great job, Spyderco and Mr. McCann.

    I remember the Canis started out years ago as a collaboration between Ernie Emerson and Kelly. There was a prototype floating around that people got very excited about. After a few months it sort of disappeared never to be brought up again....This Spyderco version is a direct translation of a fixed blade spec'd out by KM and built by Echocharliedelta knives out of South Africa. That version can been seen in a 05/06/2017 Knives Illustrated article called the, "Kembativz Brand Canis".

    How would it get "too tight" or "too loose" with a pivot bushing? I thought the point of the bushing was to avoid that kinda issue

    • @thomash4578
      @thomash4578 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had that same question

    • @ericthorpe5670
      @ericthorpe5670 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can still tighten the pivot screws down until they pinch that bushing on either side, and the action becomes too tight. Likewise with the loosening. The bushing is really just a spacer.

    • @alisuperhornet
      @alisuperhornet 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ericthorpe5670 How tight the liners push on the bushing should be irrelevant of the action. The action is determined by friction between the blade, the washer,and the bushing. You said it yourself: It's a spacer. So with proper tolerances, you should not be able to over-tighten so much that the scales pinch the washers on the blade.

    • @ericthorpe5670
      @ericthorpe5670 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alisuperhornet But the bushing runs through the blade and is in between the two washers, held in on either side by the pivot screws. I would think that tightening and loosening those pivot screws would certainly affect that bushing, no?

    • @alisuperhornet
      @alisuperhornet 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ericthorpe5670 No that's where you're mistaken. The thickness of the pivot bushing collar should be equal to thickness of the blade + thickness of the 2 washers combined (or more if the bushing sits inside an indentation in the liner).
      Therefore (with good tolerances) you don't have to worry about pinching the washers. When you tighten down the pivot screw, the bushing keeps the liners away on each side and leaves just the right amount of space for the washers. This is the whole point of a bushing pivot. If tightening down the screw affects your action, it's a sign of poor tolerances and really defeats purpose of having a pivot bushing. Look up videos on Sebenza 21's pivot bushing. It's a great example of great design with tight tolerances. You can blindly tighten that pivot screw and not worry about affecting your action or centering.

      Not uncommon with some of Spyderco's bushing models. That's why I don't buy 'em. Drives me nuts. Ikuchi, Lil' Native and Native 5 Salt all have side to side play with pivot fully tightened. I imagine other models do as well. Most people don't notice because when a blade is locked up, it's hard to tell. I disengage the lock and test for it. Some people probably think that's dumb but whatever. The bushing pivot probably makes factory assembly easier but it's a big negative for me.

    I wish there was more attention paid to the pivot bushing, either from the community and retailers or Spyderco themselves. It is a really nice feature that could definitely effect what knife I'm buying, but half the time you can only find out which knives have it by watching some random jackass over-lubricate it. If CRKT or ZT or somebody made the same knives you'd never hear the end of how great their TACTICAL TURBO TORQUE RING™©® (pat. pending) is, but with Spyderco you can't even find out by looking at the technical specs on their website.

    I don't buy many Spyderco knives due to their hype and my seldom need for a hard use knife but one thing that amazes me is how they will use that cheap ass laminated CF on a otherwise very attractive knife IMHO. I can only gather they do so because they can and their ever faithful fan boys will suck it up and plead, more, more , more. There is something to be said about makers like Spyderco that don't respect their supporters enough to offer premium materials while generally asking a premium price, now all you fan boys get indignant and hurt but please tell me why Spyderco should get away with this when most other knife makers offering knives in this price range wouldn't think of it, in all fairness it stinks. Oh and yes I am always looking for a new Spyderco to suit having a well rounded collection and my EDC is a Manix 2, so there's that.

      I hate the peel ply laminate CF too, but I think they do it because it adds way more grip that true premium CF. Just look at the Kapara or CF Shaman. That had beautiful full CF but it was so slippery. The CF laminate offers way more grip but still look a bit like CF. I agree premium CF is better but that slick material doesn't fit the purpose of this "tactical defense" knife

    • @Nightrain1011

      I agree, it's so they can use solid CF on their sprint runs, and I absolutely hate that business model. They could just make solid CF handles with the peel ply texture, but they don't. I also dislike all their slab handles, I'd like at least a little contour to the handles at this price point. All that being said, the Canis is really intriguing and I may get it and have micarta handles made for it.

    • @pomprocks

      @@Nightrain1011 So whats the deal. My PM2 handles seem to be solid CF. At least looking at them: imgur.com/OqOQFAR.jpg and imgur.com/jBnYt9X.jpg. Do they have another process that makes handles that look identical from the outside?
