  • A tour of pubs in Greenwich (mostly) in South East London. Also including a foray into Charlton, which in hindsight probably wasn't worth it.

    I followed in your footsteps last week and did the wapping pubs. I'm currently planning my next trip and that's Greenwich, this video was very warmly welcomed!

      Thanks Steve! Glad it was useful. I don't personally think the detour to Charlton for the Anchor & Hope was really worth it, and I wasn't that impressed with the Pilot Inn either. All three pubs in Greenwich proper were good though, in my opinion, and of course there are others I missed out there you might also like, as I'm sure other people will point out in the comments here!

      The Pilot lost a lot of it’s trade when The O2 and surrounding properties were built. It used to be a decent pub back in the day.

    You spent quite a bit of this out of Greenwich! If you’d gone the other way, you would’ve made it to the Richard I, Gypsy Moth, The Sail Loft, The Morden Arms… the pubs that people who live in Greenwich actually drink in.

  • @Triplen01
    @Triplen01 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    The Pelton Arms would have been a better option than Cutty Sark, if you're looking to avoid the tourist trail of Greenwich

    • @TweedyPubs
      @TweedyPubs  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes I did consider that, and I think if we hadn't done that detour to Charlton I would have made a stop there. I might have sounded a little down on the Cutty Sark but I do like the building and the location. It would be a shame to do a tour of Greenwich pubs and not include at least one by the river, even though they are all inevitably a bit touristy.

    These really are wonderful and this one was especially enjoyable. It kept surprising with its unexpected turns.
    I may have been in the Cutty Sark, but it was many years ago and I can’t be certain. It looks like Greenwich itself is retaining some character, whilst being encircled by glass and steel!

      Thank you for the kind words! Most of these pub tour videos have been solo endeavours, which makes it much easier to stick to the "script". This one was a bit different as I had a friend in tow, and it did start to feel more like a classic pub crawl, with a bit more unpredictability. Those things can take on a life of their own. The hipster beer place was definitely not planned!

      Wow Brunei! Yes I suppose not much going on in terms of pubs there...
      I didn't do a very thorough coverage of Greenwich itself, thanks in part to that detour to Charlton, which ended up consuming a big chunk of the day. Happy to hear though that the Plume of Feathers is your favourite and at least I got there!
      Thanks again for the suggestion, despite the detour this was a fun day out.

    I do like Greenwich, such a lovely area of London for a few beers in the summer especially.
    Re the "hipster beer places" - don't knock them instinctively! Seems you're not a fan of primarily hoppy beer, no matter - as you found, such places tend to do various styles to suit one's taste! Some of the establishments can be a little too "industrial" for my liking but the beer is often markedly better than what you can find in most regular London pubs imo. It's a trade off. Some of the most atmospheric and beautiful London pubs IMO just don't serve great beer choices.

    Loved watching this! When I was visiting London my friend took me to a couple of Pubs in Greenwich. Cool to see it again here. Unfortunately the day I was there it was just too crowded with other tourists which is definitely not my thing when I'm traveling. I would love to be there on a day when there's less people. Another awesome Pub trip Tweedy! Cheers! 🎩🍻🍺

      @TweedyPubs  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Jamie! I guess it was a bit quieter as I was there off-season (this month). Although I got the sense the Plume of Feathers is always relatively a bit quieter than, say, the Trafalgar Tavern and the Cutty Sark, because it's not on the waterfront.

    I'm so glad you loved the Plume of Feathers Tweedy. I venture to Greenwich once a year to meet an old work colleague and head straight for the Plume, where the Harvey's best is always superb. Sorry to see the Prince Albert has been ruined. Almost next door to the Albert was the brewery tap for The Meantime Brewery. I don't know if it is still there, but it would have been a far better option.

    • @TweedyPubs
      @TweedyPubs  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes sometimes you just know within seconds of walking through the door you're going to like a pub don't you? It was like that at the Feathers.
      I know I didn't give much commentary on the Prince Albert / Prince of Greenwich in the video but I have a soft spot for nik-nak filled pubs and I actually quite liked it, although of course it's a strange chimera of pub and Italian restaurant and I can imagine once they get busy with diners it would effectively cease to function as a pub. Also I have the advantage of never having known its former incarnation, so I have nothing to compare the current version of it to.
      I suspect the brewery tap you mention might be what is (now) called Richard the First? It's a Young's pub now, I have been in on a previous (fairly recent) visit to Greenwich and I found it very modern and rather forgettable, I'm sorry to report!

    love the pubs in greenwich, some great views of the thames.
    would be great to see a video on kings cross/euston or even paddington... there are still a few proper old skool boozers round those areas that have not been stripped of its dignity

    • @TweedyPubs
      @TweedyPubs  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You're not the first person to ask about Kings Cross / Euston! I really struggle with that area, to be honest, possibly biased by the fact I used to work around there during a mostly quite unhappy part of my career, and I think all the local pubs have a bit of a negative association for me accordingly. I used to like the Bree Louise, but alas now closed because of HS2. The only pub in the Kings Cross area I thought had at least a bit of character is the King Charles I, but really I would only go there if colleagues absolutely insisted on remaining near the office. If it was purely down to me I'd always rather just spend 5 minutes on some form of public transport and get to a part of London much better served for the kind of pubs I like! Farringdon is just one stop away from St Pancras on the Thameslink, as is Kentish Town in the other direction!
      Paddington might be more my cup of tea though!

    Mystery solved Tweedy. The Greenwich Brewery pub, The Greenwich Union, stood next door to The Richard I. It was bought by Youngs in 2021 who planned to knock down adjoining walls to make the Richard I much bigger. The work is probably complete by now.

    You are obviously a Northerner now living in West London. Greenwich is in South East London... East London is on the other side of the River (The Bad Lands) CHARLTON is in the London Borough Of Royal Greenwich... The Boat is a ship ...Ships carry boats .. the little things you use when the ship sinks.. You must have missed about Three hundred Pubs in Greenwich Town centre alone !

      Most of my tweed suits (including the one in this video) are from a company called Walker Slater, they're based in Edinburgh but they also have shops in London, and a website which I assume ships worldwide. In summer I tend to wear lighter weight suits from other companies.

    Oh dear a double vented tweed jacket! I may have to unsubscribe. Read Bill Nighy’s interview in last weekend’s Financial Times ☹️

    • @TweedyPubs
      @TweedyPubs  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely a conscious choice! Call it sacrilege if you will but I much prefer double vented jackets. I think the whole preference for single vented jackets (particularly with tweed) has some basis in horse riding, which doesn't seem relevant to most people today. The double vented jacket looks more seemly, in my opinion, if sat on a flat surface like a chair, rather than the rounded surface of a horse's back.
      I'm already veering off piste viz a viz the "no brown in town" rule, sometimes used to decry tweed wearing in the city. As an aside, I believe it originally only applied to shoes rather than the choice of cloth for suits - something to do with the countryside being muddy vs the city being sooty. Again no longer seems relevant!
      Obviously all bets are off in the first place as I never wear a tie, so I cannot claim any sartorial high ground!
