The ocean sunfish, also known as Mola mola, is one of the most fascinating and unique marine creatures. This fish is the heaviest of the bony fishes, reaching a weight of up to 2,300 kilograms. Its appearance is unmistakable, with an almost circular body, flattened laterally and with widely extended dorsal and anal fins, giving it an almost discoid shape. Despite its imposing size, the ocean sunfish is a slow and calm swimmer, feeding mainly on jellyfish and zooplankton. Its name comes from its habit of floating on the surface of the water, "bathing in the sun", which gives it the appearance of a huge lunar disk in the ocean. Although harmless to humans, ocean sunfish are vulnerable to fishing nets and pollution, which has led to concerns about their conservation.
