- Rory Steyn, the former policeman who formed part of Madiba's personal security detail, also looked after the All Blacks during the 1995 Rugby World Cup - and saw evidence first hand of the team being poisoned during the week of the final.

This is pretty tough to front up to, as a proud South African. One of the best/ earliest childhood memories was watching this game. It's fucked up, to think how corrupt everything was in SA, behind the scenes. Thanks, and apologies, to NZ rugby. Brilliant memories over the years playing against you guys! No other rivalry gets me more amped !

The Greatest part of this TRUE story is that the players never wanted to blame the loss on this incident PUBLICLY... I’m sure within the camp they weren’t happy about it.. And it takes weeks to get back to performance peak after being that sick from food poisoning..

Like I said to Captain Cat do some research on what the Boks endured in NZ in 1981. We had to train and play for weeks under stress and we lost the series narrowly and took it on the chin. There is no proof we did anything sinister at all which makes this very annoying at times.
If anything we were great hosts trying to find our way back into the International fold. We also had a plan for Lomu through great defence.

It was a great victory for a country that needed it and the All Blacks ended up having the final say. The following year they returned to South Africa and won a famous test series victory

I was gutted about this. Mainly for Laurie and his boys. But it's history now. It happened, acknowledge it so it doesn't happen again and move one.
They were two great rugby sides, du Rant, Wiese, Joost RiP, Small RiP, Stransky, Moulder, Joubert, Kruger, Pienaar, Fitzpatrick, Brown, Brooke, Kronfeld, Mehrtens, Bunce, Wilson and Jonah RiP all legends.
At the time I didn't appreciate how many all time Greats played that day.

If Rory Steyn who was there says it is so , that's good enough for me . As a New Zealander I'm extremely proud of the All Blacks of 95 . We bagged them at the time but that was a gutsy effort . Literally gutsy lol . Perhaps that's where the motivation came from to win in 96 and the following years .
Well said - your teams had more resolution after 1995 so it actually helped you but unfortunately ours have also been somewhat handcuffed too. Had Christian Cullen come two years earlier you would have beaten us easily in that final.
We always coped with Lomu but Cullen was too good for us.

98% fit for the final after a poisoning? I DON'T THINK SO. They played the final less than 48 hours after the incident and there is no way in hell a player could be that fit for a game like that. I would say 20% fit if that. I also think that the ref (Morrison) was going to make sure Allblacks would not win that day

I have had food poisoning twice in my life, once when I was extremely fit. The first 36 hrs were hell and it took me another couple of days to start training again and even then I had to cut my workouts down a bit as I re built over the following days. It would've been a hard task to go out and play world class rugby a couple of days after having food poisoning. Bloody sneaky saffa's but I put my money on Mandela's camp having a hand in it.
I had food poisoning once and boy it drained the hell outta me,I was so damn crook I thought I might not live, at the end s cuppla days later I had lost 4kgs. To play a game of rugby after that wouldve been bloody hard let alone a World Cup Final

I once missed two weeks of work because of a piece of infected chicken, lost probably five or six kilos. Not an experience I would be keen to repeat!
This man is a very respectful man and he is a true representative of what rugby is.
All Blacks were the better the team in the tournament but not the better team on the day. And that is that! Yeah there was some foul play but it was just South Africa day. Nelson Mandela was the man they played for and it made their country stronger. I'm a kiwi but I'm happy they one that one.
And the Kiwis should never let it go. It was sabotage and it was cruel. What makes it worse is that South Africans mock the Kiwis for this incident and say it was a conspiracy theory. It happened. The All Blacks were sick and were not able to play but they decided to not make it into an excuse. Who can forget the images of our fast winger vomiting on the sidelines in the final. The team looked weaker and not at full strength in that game and I cannot see how South Africans can be proud of that.

Basically, the thing to focus on now is to ensure something like that never happens again. My first Rugby memory is hearing the commentator shouting Lomu's name as he ran over the English fullback.
I was at Ellis Park that day, after following the ABs all over the Republic, from JoBurg, and Pretoria to the Cape and back. My mate and I had a fantastic time and the locals could not have been more generous and friendly hosts. We were in country about 45 days and only spent one night in a hotel, just great hospitality. The Final itself was a magical day, not just for SA but really for all involved, including the Kiwis. After the match the locals saw our supporters gear that we were wearing and no one, no one gave us any shit, if anything they were almost apologetic, inviting us to join them for a few beers. As my traveling mate was a full-on Zinny supporter, I had to blame Zinny for our loss as it was he who knocked on, giving the Yarppies the scrum that allowed Stransky to strike the drop goal. We came up short in the day, and we may have below our best due the food poisoning, but 15-12 is hardly a disgraceful scoreline. James Small contained Lomu, who we saw thrash the poms the week before at Newlands, so the Boks did play well. At the moment the Boks are struggling a bit but they will improve by next September and Ho pefully they will be competitive as the ABs certainly will be. NZ Vs SA has so much tradition and rivalry, perhaps unmatched by other fixtures, so forgive the past and Bring it on!

Our Boks slept behind the stands in that 1981 tour the night before the won that second test in Wellington I think it was. They copped similar conditions but they wanted to play and beat the All Blacks which they did in that second test and like the 1995 final that last Eden Park test went down to the wire. That's what All Black and Boks teams did.
It would not have been in Louis Luyts and SARU's interests to sabotage the All Blacks especially after re-entry and establishing the Tri Nations and Super 12. Betting syndicates were very likely because the All Blacks were so overwhelmingly good and most of the money rode on them. They likely were out to lose a fortune.
The difference is that the Boks were the first team to manage Lomu who never scored against us after that and they had no real plan B. Of course a year later Cullen came along and he was a huge thorn in our side because he had very silky running lines and was not based on power. Its a pity for Kiwis he was not ready and at that level a year before in 1995 because having him I believe would have seen you guys as the 1995 winners.
A lot of people think the Boks used to cheat - not really - our away record was even better than our home record before 1994 quite funningly enough and at one stage we were unbeaten in test series for 60 years. We were big and strong and a lot of that has changed.

As a Kiwi most of us have moved on. Its a part of our rugby history. Springboks vs All Blacks is like Ali vs Fraser. Battle of the heavyweights. Our boys are still doing well. Bring on 2019.
Many Kiwi rugby fans don't even remember it. Hardly any rugby fans under 30 would even know about it at all, let alone remember the details to not have moved on from it.
Ali and Fraser was a true rvallry both opponents had the measure of each other all the time. In the last ten years SA and NZ have played 21 times, SA have won 3 NZ have won 17 and a draw, Its hardly a rivallry anymore

As a Kiwi it upsets me that this great ABs team never got the plaudits it deserved thru this one loss. Good on Steyn for telling the truth (again). Within a year of this there were 2 other poisonings of sports teams at the same hotel. The U21 Commonwealth Cycling championship where 23 of the 24 teams got sick (not SAF) and a Lawn Bowls tournament where 25 of 28 teams got sick, (not SAF). This blows up the Sports Betting theory but also implies SARU were not directly responsible. Make your own mind up.

Talking of 1996 the one and only AB series win in SAF was also the only/first series with neutral refs.... For more read what Murray Mexted has written on this, the Boks calling the SAF test ref(s) "Uncle". And that ref saying to Murray "you are leaving, i have to live here"
@@floydkingi4364 sorry got side tracked. There is a well known plant in the region which if injested (say in tea) causes the exact symptoms in all three case. 36-48hr after injestion vomiting/ diahorea for a further 24-48hr.
I am not as bitter and twisted as my posts imply but in 1995 the ABs were on another planet to everyone else and deserved the win in their CVs. Which is why it happened.

Might have avoided this? This was all set up to unite your nation. Everything was hanging on this game. People were blasting their car horns outside the All Blacks hotel all night to disrupt their rest as if they were able to get any while they were trying to not die via poisoning
Sometimes you get sick. Sometimes a referee doesn't see a blatant forward pass, or a legitimate tackle on a renowned first five as legal.

I for one am glad someone can finally admit it without being made up as lies. As bad as it may seem and as a proud New Zealander and fan of the All Blacks I can say this, give SA their moment it’s now part of history. Be proud of your achievements as you were also going through your own fair deal of issues and problems at this time. To all NZers we have the cup now and we are the first to go back to back to hold onto it. It wasn’t our time back than so just be glad “now” is the time that we have the floating rights.

From 1996 onwards you had Cullen and Spencer and some other great players and you clearly changed your game plan from your large reliance on Lomu in a big way for the reasons I describe.

Lets take the semi against England into account when your team was 100% fit - Lomu put that game away for NZ *on his own* in a very shirt space of time. *However* take Lomu's points contribution away and you would have actually lost that match! That's right - the only other person doing fancy things in that game was Brooke and his drop goals.
Back in 1995 there were only probably four teams that could realistically take on NZ and France and Australia (the other two were England and SA) did not play you so I am not too sure you can claim you were on another planet. Lomu also created oodles of space for the other players. Christian Cullen highlighted that fact about playing with Jonah in a video here on TH-cam
The difference between South Africa and the other teams is they actually tackled Lomu and turned him into a lawnmower this nullifying him and those around him.
