    Thank You so much for everything! I bought my first telescope 3 years ago and there was a lot to learn which got me frustrated many times. My telescope ended up becoming a coat hanger for many months until I ran into your You Tube channel. Your hard work, dedication and love for AP has shown me that I shouldn't give up so easily. Thank you

    I have seen the Andromeda Galaxy last night, I was awake at 3 am and the place I was had zero light pollution. I can't even express how beautiful the milky way galaxy looked and on the left side there was the Andromeda Galaxy

      @@Astrelix Maybe he was in a different location than you :) For me Andromeda never disappears below the horizon. I live at 51 degrees lattitude so it's lowest point is at an altitude of 3 degrees, around 3AM it will be at 10 degrees for me.

      I use a Star Adventurer Pro with a 72ED Pro telescope and Canon 700D (unmodded) Camera, connected to an ASIair and mini guide scope. It's a super portable deep sky setup, doesn't need a laptop or taking apart/put back together every session and gives me pin point subs at 3, 4 even 5 minute exposure lengths. I replied to your tweet for this video with a picture of it. If I were to start again the only thing I would do differently would be to buy the Skywatcher GTi mount instead and run it in eq mode, basically giving you a Star Adventurer Pro but with GoTo.

    • @HydrogenAlpha
      @HydrogenAlpha 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Takahashi Sky 90 with a Canon EOS Ra mounted on a Vixen SXP. I love that rig because I can carry the whole unit fairly easily and you don't need a computer at all - the mount does all of the guiding and acts as an intervalometer for the camera too. The only thing it doesn't do is dither, which totally seems like it should be possible. Maybe one day they'll write the firmware for Starbook Ten.
      I must try to insert a filter drawer system into the image train...

    • @M31glow

      I use a Williams Optics 73mm with a ZWO183 OSC on an IOptron CEM25. You can't beat the simplicity of the entire set up and the amazing results of the Triad filter in heavy light pollution.

    William optic space cat, canon sl2 modified dslr as well as a Sony A7II, ZWO 120 guide camera, ZWO 30f/4 guide scope and a sky watcher EQ3 pro mount. Also have the star adventurer. This rig is light weight for sure. When I first got into this last year this setup made the most sense to me. Of course it has its limitations with the smaller objects but even so it’s so awesome capturing something that you can hardly see with the naked eye. Hands down one of the most rewarding hobbies I’ve picked up!

      Very cool, and similar to this one. The SpaceCat is awesome and that little SL2 is so lightweight. I am interested in that ZWO 30mm guide scope. (Adorable) All of that riding on the Star Adventurer - no problem.

My first telescope has not even arrived yet - but I've watched many of your video clips and they are better than reading any manual ! As you have said, there is a lot to learn - but I'm hoping that it's not too traumatic for me. Photography is already my main hobby - and astrophotography is my next challenge. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us all. Thanks. Mike, UK.

I just recently started building a rig a few weeks ago to get into Astrophotography and decided on the Cat51 Series (didn't really care on the color) and I got a SpaceCat in the mail for it a few days ago. I think that they are really just running into a supply problem given everything happening as the QA check papers on mine were like only like a week or two old from when I got it in the mail.

      @@MrSanongCh Hi Sano Chuchu, Nice beginners setup I'm sure you will have nice results. I started out with the same setup as yourself last year, I purchased the Asiair pro last December and had it delivered about a month ago. I have used it twice just to play around with it( I am currently imaging with an SCT and laptop during galaxy season) as it will get more use during late summer when the Milky Way is higher in the sky(more nebulae to target). However my initial thoughts are positive. the polar alignment is far more accurate than using just the polar scope alignment and I managed 3 minute subs without star trails on the Whitecat51(I think I could of gone longer). The mini scope and ASI120mm are ideal for the Whitecat focal length and the guiding (in RA only) is ideal although I cant remember the guiding numbers as I go by image results. A level tripod and good polar alignment are key, I wish you clear skies and good health

    Ahhh Trevor: A simple and beginner friendly video once more! You are to do more of these ;-) !!!
    I can recall it like it was only yesterday: I choose a telescope by its high focal length - beeing a total beginner with no clue of nothing. I wanted MAGNIFICATION! A wobbly mount and no skills for precise polar and star alignment -> what a struggle it was!
    Promoting the short focal length entry to all of those out there thinking about entering the hobby is so important!

    I just replaced my QHY9 with a QHY183M, so happy to move to CMOS and not CCD. Flats were 10 seconds long for Luminance! Narrowband was around 30 seconds per flat. I was tired of that, so I moved to CMOS. The download time of the CCD was so bad also, took at least 10 seconds each frame to download. The rig I am putting it on is not that portable with it being a 6" F/4 newt, but soon I am wanting to get a WO Cat 51 and mod my T3i for it, and mount it on a Sky Watcher AZ-GTe mount. The GTe mount can be converted to an EQ mode, and with it having 2 axis, you can guide on both RA and DEC, and it is about the size of the Sky Watcher Star Adventurer. I cant wait to get that setup once I can afford it after buying the 183M =)

    Very similar setup to mine, love my HEQ5 Pro. That shot of the Trifid and Lagoon is absolutely gorgeous. Great video. Not sure I can afford the Triad filter though! I'm still shooting with an unmodified DSLR but very seriously considering buying the 294MC Pro. Photographing the Iris Nebula tonight, I was up until 4am last night and 5am on Monday morning, looks like another 4am finish tomorrow!

    I own the Space Cat 51. I love it so much. Unfortunately my full frame Sony Alpha 7 does not work well with it. It became too wide field enough to where it couldn’t pick up the nebulae. But I have instead been using my zwo 294 mc with it. Much better. My Space Cat 51 sits on an AVX mount. I use the zwo 294 mc pro, the 120 mini for guiding, and the asi air pro powers everything.

    Love your channel. Question. I am a mid level telescope enthusiast. Not yet into deep sky or astrophotography. Mainly planets etc. Live in Vancouver (lots of light pollution, huge humidity, often looking sideways through the sky over roofs). Have the standard Celestron 127 EQ. With my scope - big win if I can see banding on Jupiter or any existence/features of Saturn rings. Haha. Looking to upgrade. I do understand the basics of refractor vs reflector. Pros and cons including chromatic aberration. You seem heavy into the refractors. Many say reflectors better for deep sky. The William Optics scopes do look beautiful and impressive. Assume all of the filters and coatings correct this? Rationale for refractors over reflectors? Any sub $1,200 suggestions? At some point down the road would consider the motorized tracking mount.
    Talked to local telescope store (Makarian) guys. Joked about the limitations of my basic scope. They said "Galileo would have sold his mother for this telescope". Haha.
    I believe you live in southern Ontario - facing many of the same challenges as me.
    Thanks!

    Always amazed by your results. Keep up the good work, Astrophotography is really teaching life I think, patience, stamina, disappointment, joy...
    I did some myself, but only short exposure staking with DSLR camera.
    I have a question if you have time to answer. I live at 15degre north of latitude. I have a Newton reflector and built an equatorial table to change my mount to equatorial. The problem is under such latitude you get your scope almost horizontal and the motors endure lot of weight. I could not find équatorial tables made for such latitude, and I was wondering if I should just invest in a real equatorial mount. Wouldn’t the problem remain the same ?
    Have a nice week, stay safe in this covid crisis

    Hi Trevor. Wondered what your thoughts are on guiding at 200mm using a Canon cropped sensor with the ioptron skyguider pro? I am thinking that it won't be necessary at that focal length? Subs should be 2-3min.
    Great video. Always love watching your videos.

    Completely new to this hobby. Can someone explain the pros/cons of guide camera guiding vs pulse guiding?

    • @ForaxX
      @ForaxX 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You still need a guide camera for pulse guiding, the difference is that you no longer use the ST4 cable (cable between guide cam and mount). The only cables you need for pulse guiding are 1. guide camera to PC and 2. PC to mount. Pulse guiding is better than ST4 guiding for many reasons, but for that kind of widefield setup it really isn't important

    • @ringod123
      @ringod123 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is not camera vs pulse, both do both, ie pulse guiding still uses a guide cam and camera guiding still uses pulses. The key difference is whether the mount itself (or its ASCOM driver) knows the duration of the guide correction in advance (pulse guiding), or whether the guider knows the duration of the correction and starts and stops the correction itself (regular ST-4 guiding). With pulse guiding a single guide command includes both the axis and direction to move, and the duration. In the case of ST4, the guider starts a correction on the appropriate axis and direction, and then maintains the movement until it's time to stop. The main benefit being 1 less cable to use, which isn't really a great benefit, some people do report better guiding with pulse guiding and others report exactly the same quality.

    • @ringod123
      @ringod123 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Avanteesh Motheram Not necessary at all, you do not need to know anything about autoguiding to start astrophotography with a small telescope and DSLR.

    Here is a question for you, is a 250mm telescope lens equal to a 250mm camera lens (if they even made that length in a prime). I have a 500mm lens that I use to take pics of the moon, but would never think it could take the nebula pics that you do. The moon is still rather small at 500mm and you are shooting way off. Is the main contributing factor here then the mount/tracker, which allows you to keep the shutter open for minutes at a time without star trails? Thank you in advance. Just found the channel and am learning a lot.

    This might be a bit of a dumb question, but here goes. Currently I have a SkyWatcher Star Adventurer and recently ordered an ASIair Pro and ASI183MC Pro (Still waiting on it to ship, but trying to learn in the time before it gets here). Right now I'm using a 5D Mark IV and ZenithStar 61 scope. I polar align with the rudimentary polar scope on the Star Adventurer. My question relates to alignment with the ASIair Pro (Which I believe to be similar to some of the Windows software you use for guiding and alignment). When I run the polar alignment tool in the ASIair Pro, how do I make sure that my camera(s) are pointing perfectly at Polaris? For example, there is no 'home' position on the Star Adventurer. I can get it close by rotating the RA axis to make the polar scope reticle level with the horizon, but how do I make sure the main/guide cams are pointing directly where they need to look? And as for the declination axis, there are no measurements or markings at all, so will a slight angle in comparison to the mount's polar scope mess with my polar alignment? For example, if my dec axis is off ever so slightly and I run the alignment tool and use my alt/az knobs to adjust in respect to the camera, wouldn't that cause my mount to be slightly out of alignment in respect to Polaris? The HEQ5 is next on my list of upgrades, so it won'e be a problem forever and this could likely be me thinking way too hard about it, so if anyone has any insight I would greatly appreciate it.

    I've been lurking and watching and finally subscribed...because I have questions, so many questions...
    That filter holder, I'm doing the back-focus numbers. It looks like yo have remove the tilt-plate on the RedCat to expose the M48 female threads and the filter holder attaches there. But... the filter holder had one side with male threads, one with female. The camera T2 adapter has female threads. So, isn't there another adapter I'm going to need to connect this?
    I already have a RedCat 51 and a modified Canon 650D, and since I live in Brooklyn, NY (Bortle scale 8 or 9, yeah, that bad), I'm looking at the various narrowband filters as a way to do imaging without having to drive hours.

    I'm just a little into wide angle astrophotography so a barely know anything on the subject or editing astro, but just personally I would make the blacks a little blacker. Is this the same phenomenon of beginner photographers wanting too much contrast and saturation or is it just that subjective?

    Always find your channel and advise very useful.. I just recent upgrades to a bigger telescope (My first scope was by no means anything expensive) But as i wanted to see further, wider and clearer images i purchased a CPC 1100 GPS XLT. And it sparked so many other interest such as astrophotography. I am getting ready to purchase an additional mount and lense for my Canon EOS R so that i too can start taking some amazing photographs of the more wider nighttime sky. With all the new innovation in past years, what mounts would you recommend for a beginner, or intermediate level, to start with? Thank in advance Awesome Content!

Personally I am wondering if it’s time for me to move beyond a stock Canon 70D + EF 300 F4 L lens + iOptron SkyGuider Pro with 30mm auto guiding scope. Knowing which targets this setup would excel with would be helpful!

    Just getting into AP from wildlife photography. I have a Canon EOS 7D Mk II that I plan on using for AP along with the Williams Optics Fluorostar 91. Would you recommend having the Canon IR filter removed and replaced with a H-alpha / sulphur II filter or try it as is? Haven't gotten my tele yet and was wondering about getting the EOS modded ahead of time.

    I enjoy your videos and I am mainly a visual observer. However, I would like to take some “pretty” pics of the Moon on nights when I can’t view DSOs...I have used a Canon camera, but find that holding my smartphone up I get better shots of the Moon. So, I purchased the higher priced Celestron adapter for my smartphone and will try it later this month.
    I know that “you” can shoot DSOs during the full Moon, but would appreciate a video on using a smartphone and adapter to shoot the Moon.
    Keep it simple.
    Thanks and keep up the great info...glad you wear your hat the correct way now. ;-)

    Great video Trevor, very interesting to see such a relatively simple setup.
    I'm quite new to astrophotography realistically only shooting with DSLR and wide angle night sky images but I love to get more into deep space photography. I've been researching trackers and mounts to this end. I was just wondering if you could tell me the difference between say the Red Cat telescope that you were using and say a long telephoto dslr lens?
    I know you and Ashley are also keen wildlife photographers, as am I. I generally use the Canon EF200-400mm f/4. Would something like that be suitable for deep sky imaging?
    Love your work Trevor, always look forward to seeing your videos.
