His statement starting @4:03mins is hands down the most important aspect of this entire tutorial. For a long time all I did was learn moves from various lockers and continue to practice the moves daily, but it was only when I actually looked into the history and era of this style that really allowed my locking to be executed properly. Not only do you need to educate yourself about this dance, but you've gotta make the effort to re-live the era, the era of funk. Your locking will improve significantly in both speed and style once you've understood what "Funk and Funky" is, 'House music is a feeling' so is 'funk' music.
Ken Lee thanks for pointing it out man!! i just started recently and the town where i live doesnt have anyone who practices this dance so i just have to teach myself by mirroring youtube clips
I've been dancing for 20 years and surprisingly it took me 10 years till I realized I was focusing too much on routines and was thinking too much! It's almost entirely about muscle memory! And thanks for the video I studied many forms of popping but never really could get locking down!
Thats whats up. Im glad to hear that. I notice that videos other then breakdancing get less views on my channel so im glad to hear that someone appreciates it. I am really big on pushing all elements of hip hop so whether it gets views or not im planning on putting out videos to expand everyones knowledge of the hip hop culture.
It's one of the moves, but not all moves incorporate locks, it's an overall funk/soul dance style, which can be very smooth and at times done without thowing in a lock at all. The main reason is because this single move was invented by Don Campbell, who ended up being nicknamed "Campellock" for it, but he had his own entire dance style which had all sorts of moves, so people called it "Campbellocking" style. When a group of dancers (incuding Don) came to together and became the "Lockers" based off of that, the style was then called "Locking", though the "Lock" dance move only makes up a very small portion of it. So it's mainly about the man it was named after, as opposed to the "whole style" being all about doing locks all the time (though many people do).
This video helped so much!! Im a 12yo kid whose parents never let me learn locking or popping eventho its my dream to learn! I decided to start to learn myself! Thanksss
i love watching all your tutorials. and most of all i love how they are quick to the point, and dont spend minutes on repetitive steps which makes the video long and drawn out. (i guess other tutorials dont get that YOU CAN REPLAY IT lol!) All in all, its Short, Sweet, and Genius!!
Great drop. Learn why it happened. That'll give you the 'groove' if you identify. Locking's groove is in the 'feel' and if you identify with its message. Otherwise its just technique but you can't feel the other's message and reply in a dance battle. Once you learn that, it's another language of love and respect (very missing in most lock battles)
Ozone did those over & over. All pop & not to much tick locking. I was in a crew when the NYC Breakers were on Soul Train. lol. People are amazed when they see me lock & break, but I don’t have enough repertoire to put anything together. You guys are awesome & Im looking into learning how to do this again for fun.
I am a dancer. I know some tuts and waves but no locking yet. Thanks for teaching me some basics. I gave this video a thumbs up and shared it. Have a good day.
When Moon said "Uncle Sam Points", instantly in my head I start singing in an Asian accent "Do da Unco Sam da Unco Sam da Unco Sam" from WongFu Productions xD
this is great for places that don't have a big community that supports all the other styles. I know breakdancing is pretty widespread, but locking/popping/waacking/etc. isn't as much. thanks for the video =)
Well you have to be aware that people who first saw your breakdance video's subscribed to you for just that initially. So it's only natural to have more views on your BD video's, good thing you want to post a variety of stuff cause I'm most def interested!
It's nice to show diversity(spelled?) in dancing Vincanity :) I am always told, that you grow as a dancer, if you learn different types of dancing. So in the end you won't be calling your dance something like breakdance or anything like that, but freestyle :) Make your own style with the moves you enjoy :) Btw great initiativ with making a channel with tutorials and stuff like that :) enjoy every single one
Yo Vincanity! Feature something on some of the old school stuff. & a lil bit of Boogaloo. Cause that's something people have very wrong concepts about. and for the effort you put in... Thumbs Up Man!
Anyone has an idea where I could do a loser flip softly? I was thinking of using a bunch of blankets on a wide open space floor with pillows underneath it and attempt to flip...

I've been trying to learn some basic locking for a while now, definitely appreciate this!
So, the "lock" dance style is basically called that way because you *lock* a part of your body while some others keep moving?
Yeah it seems like it
I guess
yup that's exactly it

at the end when you teach the combos you are doing it very fast so it becomes very hard to follow sometimes
