  • Alesund is a major fishing port and the commercial centre of the Sunnmøre district, with picturesque quays that bustle with activity all day long as fish catches are landed, argo shifted and the coastal ferry comes and goes.
This small but perfectly formed fishing port sits on islands connected by bridges in the northern part of Norway’s fjord area, and is an ideal base for exploring this spectacular area of coastal scenery.

My father was from Aalesund and as a young child I lived there. Not sure why America is better but they say it is.

I visited Alesund in the 1970s. A group of sailors were celebrating the 1000th anniversary of the flight of Leif Erickson (I think!) that led to the discovery of Iceland. A small Viking ship, a crew of maybe 12. We sailed around the harbor with them. Great people. If you can get to Trondheim, there may be a musik museum at Ringve. A Norwegian noblewoman collected historic instruments from all over Europe and amazing creations, like a violin made entirely from the wooden plugs used to make shoes! If it is still there it is special.
