You can only recruit him like 70% into the main story and only if you side with the bad guys who you meet at the halfway part. You basically need to stall with radiant quests to get his affinity up ffs. Dude was a last-minute "oh shit" addition after the devs realized they needed an evil companion in the base game.
While I absolutely love Curie and her accent, I must say that both Piper and Valentine had the best voice actors in the game. The limited talking animations of the outdated game engine did not do justice to their amazing performance.
The best part about Curie is that she always sounds Quiet and Civilized, which makes it even cuter to hear her say something completely innocent in nature (Example 7:28), and even worse to hear her reprimand you for your wrong doings (Example 12:18)
Well, in his defense (and PLEASE don't get me wrong, I *hate* X6; if he wasn't an iota as useful in battle as he is, I'd never take him anywhere); he is what his Institute masters programmed him to be-- to quote Kellogg, "Killing machines, pure and simple." X6 was programmed to do one thing; carry out objectives, as directly and efficiently as possible; anything that is not crucial, or necessary to the completion of the mission, or anything that serves as a hindrance, must be removed, to better serve the mission. Coursers are basically the FO4 version of Terminators; made with extremely advanced technology, yes, but at the core, just a blunt instrument; they do one thing, and do it very, VERY well (that 'thing' just happens to be killing people). (That said though, even Terminators don't seem to express the range of emotions that X6 sometimes can-- disgust, mainly.)

Really seems like the feature to have a companion plus Dogmeat was cut haphazardly, like right before release. Really seems like the feature to have a companion plus Dogmeat was cut haphazardly, like right before release. The mod that turns it on just casually turns on so many tiny dialogue changes that implies it's a normal base game feature, example Vault 81 security going "what about his/her friend, _and the dog_ "
