    In college we had an experiment to do with bromine. I had to bring a container from under the hood to a counter and had a “whiff” of bromine in the nose and it burnt for like 2 weeks. I also had a drop somehow going through my glove and making a blister. This was definitely too dangerous of a substance for college teens.

    • @thatguyalex2835
      @thatguyalex2835 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Bromine and iodine are sometimes used in halogen lamps. An electric current is passed through a filament, and the halogen interacts with the metal filament, producing a higher temperature and longer lifespan light -> higher luminosity. Pretty neat, eh? :) I do prefer LEDs, as diodes are typically more efficient.

      They also have large roles in chemistry. Being electrodes themselves, reducing agents, and all the way to organometallics!

    The best thing about Nile Red's videos is that he never "blows stuff up" gratuitously. As far as I can tell, he really cares about the chemistry. If a reaction or a substance happens to be dangerous, he may still show it, but not because it is dangerous but because it is interesting in some other way. And the camera work is awesome. I like to take pictures of my element collection, but I REALLY need to upgrade my camera.

    Hey NileRed, I'm a high-school student and I love your videos. I'm taking H.S. level chemistry this year and I've already got the knowledge to easily pass and probably score advanced on the state test.
    Your videos are very advanced but it's fun to make sense of all the weird chemistry-talk. I'm also using your videos to learn nomenclature. I'm planning on going to college for chemistry, because I love science, and chemistry seems like the coolest most hands-on (more pure) science.
    My chemistry teacher is also assisting me in going really in-depth with a lot of this stuff, and allowing me to stay in for part of lunch to use the lab for other things, though I haven't quite gotten any chemicals out yet, only working with Bunsen burners because my school is too poor to afford hot-plates. Though hopefully I will go far in competition for science this year.
    Anyway, I just wanted to let you know I love your videos and they have made me very enthusiastic about chemistry. I've always loved the more pure sciences, though I haven't ever decided which ones I liked more. I think chemistry will certainly be my choice in the future! :)

    Yeah, working with bromine is always fun... I remember one experiment I had to do a few years back in university, simple addition of bromin to fumaric acid. Thats when I learned the hard way, that bromine basically does not have a surface tension, something I never thought about ^o^
    I blanked out for a second and turned the stopcock of the addition funnel the wrong way and in that following half second that I noticed and closed the funnel as fast as I never closed it ever again ;) , all 9g of bromine went *whoosh* in the flask with boiling water... One second later the (secured) stopper went *puff* and all of the gaseous bromine filled the fume hood where I luckily could contain most of it so nobody needed to be evacuated... that was a lot of fun, let me tell you, who needs scary movies for an early heart attack :D
    The links you wanted to add below the video btw. was for the making of the bromine and putting in the ampule (around 1:55)
    And concerning the improvment of your videos I can only say that showing you cute face more often definitly wouldn't be a bad thing ;)

    That was just awesome and I am more then happy with the format. Sure, the "how to acquire" and typical application makes some elements not fitted for the format, but I think there are plenty of elements that are interesting and can be obtained reasonable. When does elements are covered, then the format can off-course change, but I acctually like, that you have shown an relatively easy to obtain element, showing that chemistry is work and requires safety procedures, but it is not that complicated.

Since bromine is an old anesthetic I passed out but a friend nearby woke me. Don't drink when you make it folks you'll get really drowsy and could die softly sorry NileRed! Great video Nile! I like the new format! Also i love the idea of element series. Was gonna comment "where is the lab coat?" but you put one on! :) Maybe do a total noob series for us that know nothing about chemistry but want to learn. Things about lab equipment for example. Safety. Maybe a few really (and i mean really) guerilla experiments that we can do for kids. That don`t require actual laboratories.
    A small tip for focus. Put something where you are going to stand and focus on it before recording. This way you will avoid the actual focus being on the background. You`ll avoid people getting their eyes stuck on the shelves behind you instead of looking at you. :)
    All in all great video though! Feel free to ask if you need lighting tips if you indent to put our more of videos in this format. There are some very easy ways to make the production value of the videos jump without expensive gear.
    Also love the pleasant and clean audio! Keep up the great work!

      thanks for the input! This was my first time filming a person really, so it was a little bit frustrating. I tried to pre-focus where I would be standing, but meh. HOLY FACE REVEAL (YESSSSS). You look nice! You should show your face more often!
    Bromine is the one thing I've never wanted to attempt to synthesize (although, I did synthesize hydrogen sulfide and wore a respirator and never had any issues). It freaked me out once when I saw a TH-cam video where someone filled up a container with bromine and put in one of the mostly-aluminum-bodied iPhones in it with literally zero safety gear. I shudder just thinking about it.

    • @NileRed
      @NileRed  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Which respirator did you use for the hydrogen sulfide? That stuff is nasty. Way more dangerous than bromine in my opinion

    • @jebug29
      @jebug29 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NileRed I'm not sure as it's at my house (which is 3 hours away). It's the only one I could find at Lowes, and it looked really similar to the one you had on (I think it was made by 3M?). I couldn't smell the hydrogen sulfide at all (until I bumped the mask about midway through, which is when I got a quick sniff of rotten eggs and death). Most of it was going into a Zinc Chloride solution, but there was a good bit more than I expected escaping. I left and came back the next morning when the synthesis was done, so I wasn't exposed for more than 30 minutes anyway.

    If you want to use up all your bromine in some chemistry, look up bromine oxidation of carbohydrates. I use bromine, potassium carbonate and water to turn riboses into ribolactones. The great thing about it is that it is selective for the anomeric hydroxyl group so all you need to do is make the acetonide of the 2'-3' hydroxyls and you're good to go on the oxidation. I can provide paper refs if its an idea that interests you.

    I liked it! You did well face to camera for a long video like this and your composure was seamless compared with your annotated videos. Though, I am not sure I like the annotated videos "more" or that I am just used to them. I wouldn't say doing a complete transition over to this form would be my preference. That being said though, you would NOT lose a subscriber because of it nor would I be any less enthusiastic for future videos when they drop. The non-personal aspect of seeing only the labware and apparatus adds a bit of a clinical feel to the video and removes and bit of subjective feel and I kind of like that. If that makes any sense?? lol
    Same with NurdRage, Doug and (sady gone) Chem Player.
    All in all though, its complete quality as we have come to expect and enjoy from your content. Keep it up, you're doing great! :-D
