I resonate with this - my wife and I have dubbed ourselves “recovering perfectionists” and we do our best to balance working on something to the best of our abilities and not working on it past the point where we lose our love for the piece. I also heard very recently the idea that “your tastes are always outgrowing your abilities” - meaning the kind of stuff you love and want to emulate will ALWAYS be “better” than what you can make. I find it very comforting to think that and now tell myself to keep stretching towards that place by leaning into my own tastes, trusting that I’m always improving and focus on having the most fun! Love the content dude, as always
Done is better than perfect! That's a lesson I've struggled to learn for years as a musician and filmmaker. Each project gives a new opportunity to learn and grow, but if you don't allow yourself to move onto the next project you're hindering your ability to learn and become better as an artist. Sometimes letting go and posting what you have is exactly what you need in order to achieve what you're really after 🙌
My guy i do not understand how you have so few subscribers in the grand scheme of things anyway you are incredible your music your editing your production are all on point and i truly believe you and other people in my life have helped push me towards making my own music
I'm having a really hard time writing a perfect song right now, with my music career and all things are going south, I was able to come across your channel. I'm still new here btw, but when I clicked on this video I just realized that I needed this and it somehow motivates me in making and recording my songs again and probably produce it. thanks so much Trev! this video helped.
This idea resonates with me. I feel like my art is never finished I just eventually give up and force myself to share it 😂I can't watch or listen to videos I've recently posted because the disappointment or perceived weaknesses just jump out at me and it feels like all I can see or hear. What I have found though is that after 2 or 3 years I forget what it was that I didn't like and I'm able to appreciate the art as if I'm seeing it for the first time. And then I can think to myself, "hey that's actually pretty good." The weaknesses I do see then become sort of endearing to me and make me feel nostalgic about that time when I made the art. This is a somewhat recent revelation for me.
Happens to me ALL of the time. Any time I go back to my old videos, even if I don't think theyre good, I get very nostalgic because there is a certain charm that I just "did it". Love that this resonated with you, thank you for making the art that you make
@@TrevBarnes Love your videos btw. So down to earth and honest about the process of making things. Very relatable and most of all, the music you make is lovely. Keep up the important work.
I think I needed to hear this. I have so many songs on my hard drive, the songs will never be good enough, but how can I ever get better if I can't finish one song for once. And I shouldn't be scared of what other people will say, if one person resonates with your art it should all be worth it.
No matter what, someone is not going to like what you do. On the other side of the same coin, no matter what, someone IS going to like what you do. Something I've come to realize, we care so much about what others think of our art because subconsciously we want them to feel the same impact that our art made us feel.
I week is normal, two weeks you are struggling, 3 weeks you have over mix it, walk away from it for at least 2-3 days and begin again this time limit yourself to under a week.
My problem is I easily get demotivated as I always compare myself to others. I always worry that because im getting older (24 turning 25) I might miss my chance, so i push as hard as I can but then, I see someone younger making their dreams come true and im stuck trying to even figure out what music i want to make and then either delete the project or let it rot on my hard drive. I also compare my instrument skills to others (also started learning late in my life back when in was studying sound in college) and even though I know practice makes perfect, I see self-taught kids playing amazingly and i still struggle learning a basic song.
As the wise Teddy Roosevelt has said, “Comparison is the thief of joy”. We tend to look at others and see them “pass” us in the race, but what we don’t take consideration is that we are all in different races. Just focus on what makes you happy, have your definition of success at the core level, you’ll be fine :) Wishing you the best of luck my friend

What a great point, absolutely.

No song will ever be perfect, you will find yourself equally stuck in your journey as you will inspired. It’s all part of the process my friend :)
Thank you for this video 🙏🩷!!

I feel you. As someone once said, “songs are never finished, only abandoned.”
Daniel Johnston changed my whole perspective on making music. Art is about showing our humanity and humanity is far from perfect.
Exactly

Needed this as a creator today! Love this!
Glad it was helpful!
