Police Remove Some Unpermitted Food Vendors from Pier

  • Santa Monica Police Officers, in coordination with Los Angeles County Public Health Deputies, push unpermitted food vendors from the Santa Monica Pier on Sunday, September 26, 2021. We did not see any unpermitted food vendors arrested or cited. The police seemed to be unsuccessful in keeping unpermitted food vendors from the Pier.
SM Pier has a worldwide identity. The City wants to preserve our decades old wooden Pier so it can be enjoyed for years to come. Because each unpermitted butane/propane cook-cart is a potential fire hazard for the Pier, the City’s Code Enforcement, the County Health Department, and the City’s Police Department periodically conduct educational and enforcement campaigns to help keep the Pier safe. This safety focus calls to eliminate all unpermitted carts, while addressing improper hot grease and trash disposal, and unsanitary food service conditions on and immediately adjacent to the Pier.
Street vending is restricted on the Santa Monica Pier. Prior to enforcement, the City of Santa Monica has been educating and warning the unpermitted street vendors for several month.
All vendors need a City of Santa Monica business license and vending permit to sell any items in the City, and vendors selling food must also obtain and display a Los Angeles County Department of Public Health permit.
As part of the City’s program, sidewalk vending is restricted in certain congested, high-traffic areas to protect public safety. This includes on and around the Pier, where all vending is prohibited except the City’s existing licensed vendor cart program, and the beach, Third Street Promenade, and Palisades Park, where stationary vending is not permitted.
A new ordinance passed on August 24, 2021, prohibits any person from using any combustible fuel (including propane, butane, any other liquid gas, kerosene, steno, charcoal or wood) on the Pier (including the Pier Bridge) or within 25 feet of the Pier, for any purpose involving the fuel’s combustion including heating, lighting, or cooking without a permit from the Fire Marshal.
Violations of the new ordinance may be handled as infractions, misdemeanors, or through issuance of administrative citations, in addition, combustible fuels used in violation of the new ordinance will be subject to impound by the Fire Marshal.

Well homelessness is a whole other topic just like drug dealers and addiction and mental health. But thing is, let's just say you take your sisters kids to the pier for fun and games. One of them wants a delicious looking hotdog wrapped in bacon and oh the smells of grilled onions and jalapeños so good. Think about the dirty unwashed hands dealing with money all day. The same hotdogs uncovered on low heat being recycled and sold on the cool side of the grill. Idk food poisoning is real, could get it anywhere but the more chances......I also feel guilty now having patronized these carts in the past, parked in front of legimate restaurants.

Americans have unreasonable priorities. The venders aren’t robbing anyone, no one’s selling drugs, they’re not defecating on the street, and they’re not shooting at each other. The health department should ensure standards are being met and let them earn a living.

Yeah and also give you salmonella poisoning which I had 3 years ago from an unlicensed vendor outside a nightclub. The hospital specifically told me it was the hotdog and I complained to the Department Of Health and met them a week later at another concert(same place) and found out that the person who sold me the food was unlicensed and they confiscated EVERYTHING. Food tests proved that they NEVER changed the water which was holding the cooked hotdogs. TRUE STORY AND BE CAREFUL.

A bit of both. But mainly that they could be selling unsanitary food. I sell food from a cart at our local farmers market and you have to show that you have a permit that's been approved by the local FDA agent that you are selling quality food and that you are who you say your are. A lot of those businesses pay the fees so it's unfair when you have all these vendors that couldn't careless of how the sell food move and you don't know if it's good or not in terms of sanitary. The permit doesn't cost much to get and the agents are usually really cool and you just have to show them basic common sense in food handling and that you have the proper storage for food.

I feel sad for these cart people but then it is fair not to the businesses that are licensed and pay rents to the city. People who buy from these cart people need to keep in mind about fairness. May be all the cart people should pool their money and set up a small shop there and even perhaps seek funds from the city to setup a shop.

I am magician who performs regularly on the pier and these illegal vendors are extremely rude, disrespectful to everyone, and do not follow any of the rules. I paid a fee to get a permit to perform on the pier and I would expect that fee is used to enforce and remove people performing illegal actions on the pier. They give a several hundred dollar ticked for smoking on the pier because it could catch on fire, why is it so hard to stop un-permitted vendors from having open flames on the pier? I would like to see police and code enforcement confiscating their carts, destroying the food, and writing misdemeanor tickets, and maybe it will reduce the illegal activity.
I can't use flash paper or cotton on the pier and these guys have open flames, cooking grease, and no permits of any kind and it seems to not really be an issue.

Those vendors shouldn’t be selling their stuff without permits. They usually never pay taxes, or anything to be selling there like the business on the pier. They are usually people on food stamps who buy food and sell. This is dangerous for the community as they don’t have a wash station to wash their hands while handling food. So many violations and people don’t see not yo mention the illnesses my patients have experienced from these vendors.
