  • Are you thinking about getting a hip replacement or just had one? You might want to know the dos and don’ts after a hip replacement anterior approach.
After an anterior or frontal approach hip replacement, you have to observe certain precautions. That is because you need to protect the area where you had surgery because it needs time to heal and that area needs to be protected.
First precaution is no hip external rotation. That means do not turn the leg that you had hip replacement outwards. The easy way to remember this is avoid pointing your toes outwards. Do not plant ornleave the leg stationary when turningto the opposite directionof the leg which you had a hip replacement.
Second is avoid extending your leg or kicking back. This will put pressure on the surgical site.
This usually happens getting in and out your bed. Make sure that you support your leg with a hip replacement by hooking It with your good leg in bringing it up and down the bed. You can also use a leg lift or a belt to bring it up and down if you don’t have anybody to help you or if you cannot do it yourself with your other leg.
Do not extend your back or lean backwards. This will also put pressure on the surgical site. This also applies when you lay on your belly. That is because usually when you lay on your belly we tend to extend our back when we get up. They also a standard but when we are reading Or doing some thing laying on your bed.
Avoid pelvic Bridging. This is a common exercise but in this case not do this. Sometimes we do this when we put our while laying on our bed. Again that will put pressure on the surgical site.
So an easy way to remember all this is to avoid movements that will cause the surgical site open or that will put pressure on the surgical site.

I had an anterior approach 3 months ago. My surgeon provided very minimal info on what to do or not do after. So I watched a lot of TH-cam videos. This video is excellent. Info is more clearly explained than other videos on hip recovery. I have been fortunate - no problems.

Thank you so very much for posting this video! It was very helpful. I had an anterior total hip replacement about two weeks ago. I’m going to recommend this any of my friends that have hip surgery because I wish I would’ve watched this before surgery. Wish I would’ve known about the back extension and the pivoting. since I don’t need my strap anymore to get in and out of bed, I love the tip about hooking your healthy leg on your surgery leg and getting into bed that way. very helpful.

Excellent information. It never occurred to me to use an old belt as a leg lifter. Getting in and out of a car was something I was not sure about but now I have ideas about how to do it right

Wonderful demonstration! I will be having Anterior HR in a couple weeks and will be going to a Skilled Nursing Facility for a few days, then home alone with no one to assist. I'll need help with groceries, laundry, trash removal and rides to PT. Any suggestions?
