I live in the United States. We don't have military horses, but we have military and police dogs. Like the horses, the dogs are military officers and police officers. You don't see big crowds of people putting their hands all over them. The officers won't let people do that for a reason. I can't stand somebody putting their hands on my face and nose, the horses get tired of it. The more disrespectful the tourists get, the more I think they shouldn't be allowed to touch them at all.

If I remember correctly, our favourite, now ex-trooper, once mentioned Luxembourg and put him on the same level as Ormonde when it comes to biting and pushing and he is very sensible. So I think we will still have a lot of fun with him
He definitely mentioned Luxembourg in that video. If I recall correctly he said it was difficult to even saddle him while here at Horse Guards.

John is by far the best videographer of the horse guards, troopers, i’m still not straight on that. the others don’t say a word and it gets quite boring. (sorry, guys, but it’s true. we want to know what the heck is going on.)

I think the time is coming, and is probably long overdue, when tourists will be banned from being so close to the horses and petting them. They're not pets! They're working horses and can be highly-strung compared to peoples' own ponies and horses. There's far too much crowding and it makes me very uncomfortable to see. Will it take a child being hurt or worse before something is done about it?
Guides should have to make a booking for their groups. Too many at once.
The way things are going nowadays, they'll ban the horses.

Horses do like affection. It's just a respect thing, approach with space, and respect. If the horse is interested they'll soon let you know 😂

Thank you for your diligent reporting. As a horse person from Texas, people tend to be awed by the horse or are indifferent. Horses are highly sensitive and intelligent beings, self aware. I gasp at the crowding by the uninformed public. My hat’s off to the guards’ most excellent training with these beautiful animals. You are wonderful. Thanks again, Katheren.

the horse is called a Comtois, and it’s exactly as you described this one. it’s a draft horse. they do have a large head, a deep girth, are stocky, with strong backs, and strong, short legs. i’d love to him run. 🐴🌷🌷

I think it shows how well trained the horses are, they only have melt downs when someone or something really upsets them. The troupers have so much patience.

I’ve never seen this Guard of the Blues & Royals Regiment for the past 2 years. I must say, he’s a new Mounted Guard & his first appearance as a Boxman.
Don’t underestimate him because of his good looks. Just look at the medal he received for what it represents. He has an uncanny resemblance to the famous Roman soldier. The stern look indicates that he is a no nonsense Guard just like the popular Boxman & the Captain’s favorite, Trooper E.J.
He certainly has presence

The horses are mostly all bred for this job, they’re either Irish Draught or Irish Draught x Thoroughbred.
As black is not a predominate colour in horses, the pool to select from is quite small.
Where on earth you’d get Haflinger or Brabant from, I’ve no idea!
@bewildered75 Brabant are a stocky, can be black, draught, draft horse from France. If bred to the normal horses they breed to, you could possibly, POSSIBLY, get this horse. As a person who has been in the horse field for 50+ years inone way or another, and as a trainer for 30 + years, I've seen Irish Sport Horses crossed with a Brabant, and they looked like this horse. It’s hard to imagine any scenario where an Irish bred horse crossed with a Brabant would be used unless there was a shortage of Irish Draughts

@@Gingersnaps-fe2xrI'll tell you a funny story about this. Years ago, I was at Gatwick airport with my husband. We were in the departure lounge and a man came along pulling a case on wheels. The place was packed due to delays and there was luggage on the floor in front of him so he took a little detour around passing under a staircase and back onto his way across the floor. And damn me if a line of people didn't follow him, all passing under exactly the same staircase even AFTER the luggage was removed. I could almost hear the bleating!!!!😂😂😂😂

Shearer probably named after
Brigadier EJ Shearer.....Brigadier EJ Shearer served through two World Wars and during the Inter-War years in India. His long service continued into civilian life where he was an Inspector with the Special Constabulary.
He was named after Lance Corporal Karl Shearer, Blues and Royals, who died in 2003 while on active service in Iraq.

Poor Luxembourg! He just doesn’t want to be cooped up in the box when he sees the possibilities the police horses present when they come by! I can see the lure of walking about with a friend, seeing the sights as opposed to being crowded with randos for an hour!😹🐎❤️

We took beautiful, regal wild animals and reduced them to do what, for them, must seem ridiculous. “I was out in the field, happily munching grass, flicking flies, sun on my back in the country. Now, I stand in a tiny stone box, surrounded by loud noises, stinking air, humans petting, poking and touching me. What brand of fresh hell is this?!”

Good take on the Airwolf theme! Jan-Michael Vincent passed away in 2019 at 74 years of age. He had sadly spent a lifetime of struggle with substance abuse. But was one of my very favorite actors in the 1980s. :)
Also...the horse with double meltdown seems to have some real issues with the crowds. Sad. Wonder if they have ever considered limiting the amount of people at a time in the facility?
It was the police horses going past that set him off , he wanted to follow the herd an instinctive reaction .
@@kathellison8084 horse had a similar reaction about a week ago with no police horses in sight. It was not just the police horses; though I do not think they had no effect, it would be a mistake to say they were the only factor.

You can see his face when the helmets usually cover their eyes. Yes, he is a very handsome guard. I am surprised he has not been talked into modeling! This work though is much more honorable and rewarding.
The guard you mentioned is handsome with that dimple in the chin. There is one there that is even more handsome. John knows the guard I'm talking about, plays rugby, wont say more for his privacy

It amazes me just how many people in the front line, hold their child in front of themselves while a horse is obviously distressed. 🤷♀️
I think it’s time for barriers to be separating the guards area. People will still be able to get photos but with the horse in the background instead of as a stage prop.
The Troopers and horses are standing part way onto a busy public footpath that runs through Whitehall.
It isn’t possible to use barriers there
The local council allows the public to be asked to stand out of the way when the guard is changing or if there’s a safety issue.
The horse has had enough of these people
He's not alone

That’s not a Coronation medal, it looks most like an Afghanistan campaign medal to me (I’m no expert). Both unfamiliar Boxmen are obviously not new, they both have Parachutist insignia.

Oh John , I'm disappointed with you , not recognising our lovely Monty 😶. You were right first then changed your mind , Sheera ( or however it's spelt !) is all black ! Brutus is Belgian draught , a very unmistakable horse a real beauty , I do hope , as I'm sure everyone else does that we get to see him again and find out how he's getting on . Luxembourg wanted to follow the herd a natural reaction , the HCav horses are also used to working as part of a group in parades . Either that or he wanted to pay a visit to the police stables and see what they had to eat there 😋. Looking forward to part 1 and seeing more Q 10 and Ormonde 😁.

If I brought children there, or any crowded place, I would put bright colorful clothes on them. In this sea of people, most wearing black, you could lose them quickly. I even lost my 2 yo son in DisneyWorld while I thought I was holding his hand, didn’t know he’d switched out with his brother. lol. I’m loving your videos, I’m a people watcher and love the history. My ancestors are Irish and we have a lot of red heads. And you’re right about the Latin peoples hair, glad to see their’s wasn’t dyes green etc. 😅😅😅

I concur John a very good looking new trooper indeed on Luxembourg. Very regal looking. The stray helmet tassles were annoying. Good control with horse when horsie lost it. What a sweetie the replacement horse is. The family group at 31:07 notice not dressed in usual attire. What was going on before the dismount, looked like Shearer was not ridden into position correctly, everyone was all over the show. Thanks John. kiwi 😃

I would be in a state of reverence being around these troopers and their horses. Don’t understand why some people have to act like idiots, to put it nicely. I believe a serious pic standing next to the horse is so much nicer than all the silly antics some women do as posing for a “famous” men’s magazine. 😢😢😢. I feel for those horsed dealing with all those tourist everyday
Now THIS is when they need someone out the front to stop the crowding and yelling!! Some of these people don’t appear to have volume controls. Shearer is pretty calm but it’s a lot for ANY animal..They can have their pictures but they just need to stop piling in all at once and turn the fricken volume down. Brutus was a Belgian Draught…..this new unidentified horse has draught in him too, only it’s Irish draught. And he’s by no means low to the ground, he’s very tall just short legged and deep bodied….and he looks very much like an Irish draught to me, but they’re very variable and outcrosses will sometimes instead of combining features, favour dam or sire. Belgian Draughts are far stockier and more muscular. They tend to have huge crests and short necks and much heavier heads where this horse has a fairly long neck and a fairly refined draught type head.
And a small scale minion invasion!! 😳🤣
