- Mortal Kombat was one of my favorite action movies growing up so I thought it would be fun to see the main differences with the new HBO Max version starring Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, and Hiroyuki Sanada.

I still like 95 more. Maybe the new movie will grow on me. I liked Kano a lot, and SubZero and Scorpions fights.
I want 2021 to be better than 95 but unfortunately not.

2021 lacked everything 95 had such as character development and a fucking plot, 95 just lacked the effects and brutality.

@@Romasu_ Not a bad theory.....if death had any lasting consequence in Mortal Kombat. I know you probably know this stuff already, but it is a relevant reminder to illustrate my points. You see, Nightwolf isn't just one person: he is a shaman warrior who is chosen by the Spirits of the Matokah tribe to succeed the one who came before. There was even a female Nightwolf at one point before she was killed. It's a spiritual mantle passed down through the generations, which means we may see OUR Nightwolf, the modern one, appear next movie.
And with all due respect, just because Mileena is a general in Shao Kahn's Outworld army, and Kitana is nowhere to be found save for her bladed fan, that doesn't mean Mileena killed her - there's no evidence to prove this. Hell, the blade fan might not even be hers: it could be an Edenian relic recovered from its ruin after Outworld's invasion claimed it. There are other theories I myself have regarding Kitana's fate, since she's too important a character to not even have mentioned: she's likely staying by her "father", Shao Kahn's side to remain his body guard as she was trained to be while still ignorant of her past. Or, she learned the truth of what Kahn did to King Jerrod and drove Sindel to do, and she COULD have tried to fight him, and failed because she was either killed (possibly by Mileena......though I doubt it, because if so, then Mileena would then become Kitana physically), or she was driven away when her assassination failed. She went to Raiden, and he offered her Sanctuary somewhere neither Shao Kahn no Shang Tsung would find her. The fan is possibly a keepsake offering, and thanks for Lord Raiden's aid.
Besides, she's also Liu Kang's love interest, and the two have always been together in some capacity: can't have Mortal Kombat without one of its staple characters playing a role somewhere, now can we?
This makes sense for Kuai Liang's resentment towards Bi Han. Bi Han was a brutal killer and ultimately turned Kuai Liang away
Kung Lao’s intro was everything. Kano was Hilarious and interesting character. Sub-Zero was such a badass.
You missed a little nice throwback to the game, when Lui fights Kano in the pit .... Lui is spamming the same move over and over (the roundhouse swipe kick) , which is a direct refrence to people spamming the same move in MK over and over and over xD Kano even says "Is that the only move you know?" They even show him failing to predict the next move and getting hit by it ..... i thought it was a nice touch xD
There's actually more to it than that. In the original arcade version of Mortal Kombat, that was the easiest way to beat Kano. It didn't matter when you fought him, as the first opponent or right before Goro, once you swept him, he would never block it and you would win.

@@nkznkz3800 yeah the leg sweep was vicious back in the day, but the best double moves on MK was Liu Kang's flying kick right after a fireball or jumping kick and Sonya Blade's leg throw after a jumping kick. You could never block those after the first move connected.

True fans know that the 95 movie was based on the first 2 games, and had limited lore for character stories connections. Obviously the new film now has 2 decades of lore to make it way different.

95 MK will always have a place in my heart, 2021's was a great reboot. Enjoyed it thoroughly, though I'm sure the critics will hate it as usual. Sometimes it's OK to have plenty of fan service.
The 1995 Mortal Kombat will always be a classic to me.

It's going to do well. Theatre was packed and a lot of showtimes I checked were too.

I enjoyed both movies. They're kind of my biggest guilty pleasures, tbh.
The best MK movie is technically Scorpion's Revenge, and that was animated.

in the first film he was actually a prince and MK champion, in this new movie I think they used him to fight Cole just as an fan service, he has no story or importance

@@manuelroberts7379 Lmao, race-baiting Moron. Johnny wasn't included in this one because in Canon, Johnny Cage doesn't show up and get relevant up until the actual Tournament starts. Johnny Cage is slated to be introduced in the second movie, and rumours are that the Miz from WWE might play the Role, given that Ed Boon already gave him his blessing. Hence the poster at the End of the Movie.

I just dont get it. With so many characters from MK they make some NEW guy which turns out to be one of the main characters, gives him some shit powers/weapons, then ends up killing a Prince who has killed hundreds and ends up dying by some weapon I still have no idea what it is. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
@@breadfan9 so far his power is basically black panthers suit but crossed with clayface(weapon forming). It can disperse the kinetic energy or form weapons (idk if the weapons form from the kinetic energy or are just constructs like green lantern)
@@breadfan9 I'm glad that I'm not alone in thinking this too. Literally, they have so many characters with fleshed out story that they could've focused on. I really hope for the sequel that they just cut the cole character out and have character focus similar to MK10 and MK11. Even though I'm not too crazy about the actual stories of both games, I liked how they would focus on segments of certain characters and their development..

Lui Kang and Shang Tsung were better in 95 film than in 21' film
There were definitely things that the old one did better. That being said I didn't hate the new one either. Saw it with my girlfriend last night and even she enjoyed it (she's a scorpio, they tend to be into dark movies).
No cap they were the best cast of the 1995 film and the classic theme.

In this movie, bi han is killed. Who becomes sub zero after bi han? His brother kuai liang comes back to avenge his brother's death but gets turned into an ally of scorpion's and the others's. We havent seen Johnny cage yet so im excited to see what they do with him. I hope we see more iconic kombatans too

@@MrLdevelle you couldn’t be more wrong. Cole is not Scorpion, this was specifically said by the creators and writers of the movie. He is what they said he is, a descendant. At the end of the movie when Scorpion “kills” Bi-Han, you can immediately see his soul being brought to the netherrealm. This is where he is resurrected and becomes Noob Saibot. It isn’t mentioned how or if this version of Sub Zero even has a brother. If he does, they’ll probably do it like how they did it with Cole, he’s an ancestor of Bi-Han and not a brother. More than likely when they go to Hollywood to find Cage, they’ll probably go look for Kuai Liang as well.
@@MrLdevelle also if Bi-Han had a brother, he wouldn’t have been born in this time period, which means his brother is also powered by Shang Tsung’s magic. Which in turn means he’s probably already the second sub zero, which wouldn’t make any sense to the continuity.

Goro did look good in the new Mortal Kombat but I still prefer the animatronics from the original. 3 of us saw it at the theater last night and all 3 of us agreed "The original movie was so much better, even with a PG-13 rating".

It seems to me like they decided to make a scorpion vs subzero movie and sprinkled a few extra plot lines and characters in for time filler. And why in the hell did create the Cole character? They could of used any one of the 80 characters in the mortal Kombat series to fill that role. I would been happier if they used Stryker then them just creating a character out of thin air who ironically has the super power of armor. Basically literal plot armor.

1995 Human Reptile has always have a special place in my heart and 2021 reptile was pretty savage but dosent stand with the classic human reptile. But that's my biggest gripe other than that I'm just grateful they are going to do a mortal kombat cinematic universe.

I like how they actually had to learn to unlock their powers and also show how they unlocked them instead of them just being able to use their powers that was dope

30 years of lore packed in 2 hours. Can you imagine a 2 hour game of thrones movie or a 2 hour lord of the rings movie? MK needs to be a running show; a running show that doesn't have cheap dialog like this movie did.

@ quan chi disguised Bi Han killed scorpion and his family so he could corrupt his soul when he went to the Netherrealm. He manipulated scorpion into revenge killing bi Han so he could then corrupt him changing him to noob saibot. Scorpion eventually learns the truth. This story is told In mortal kombat 10 but is part of the lore a huge miss in this movie.
Have you not see Scorpions Revenge lmao the movie just didnt want to stick to the lore.. they kinda ruined it... but the animated movie pretty much covers the lore in an 1hr and half.

Also I didnt like the fact the movie starts with him getting his but kicked by a regular guy and he manages to beat Goro the 9x Mortal Kombat Champion before the tournament.
The 1995 version has a better soundtrack, better chemistry between the characters and I think the fights are better choreographed.
The 2021 version obviously has better effects, better characters (individually) and blood.
I think the 1995 version is more fun to watch, despite being more cheesy. 2021 version is more "serious" in tone but at the moment it becomes boring. But it may be that nostalgia speaks louder than I really think.
You had to realize the 1995 movie was cheesy cause the 90s itself as a whole was a cheesy fun decade. Everything either got boring or goes downhill once the 90s ended.

I've got to go with 95 Goro, he had a lot more personality rather than just being an brute and the puppetry was pretty damn impressive. Also Kevin Michael Richardson as the voice, friggin awesome. Just to see such scale brought to the bring screen as a kid was mindblowing. I think Shang was also better in the 95 film as well, Cary brought so much charisma, so much smarminess that just stuck even to this day. The new Shang Tsung, while not terrible, just felt like your generic villain though the whole breaking the rules. I got to admit, completely in character.
Just hoping that for any future films, they don't end up like Annihilation. Shao Kahn is supposed to be a towering power house, not Frank from the gym wearing a Cosplay.

I enjoyed both the 2021 MK and the 1995 MK. But they both have there ups and downs in the movies. 2021 MK fighting scenes are ways better. But I like the 1995 MK storyline.
This 2021 film was mainly just to set each character backstories the next movie should have a more better storyline

The sequel needs Kitana, Kintaro, Johnny Cage and Baraka if they are following From MK 1- 2 (I also realize they haven't even started the tournament yet). They can always resurrect characters Reptile and Mileena (who is a clone anyways).

I like how 1995 had very clean and clear pictures with some light. 2021 is very dark lit and not as good in my opinion. 1995 was much better than the new 2021 MK. For me 2021 is an *5/10*

Nah, the movie was meh at best. The editing and acting was all over the place. The Hanzo vs Bi Han sequences is clearly where the money was spent. All of the rest looked like something you'd see on a straight to DVD release. The actress playing Sonya Blade delivered her lines like something from one of those cheesy SyFy Saturday flicks. They even botched up the end theme with this generic dance dubsteb version of Techno Syndrome. No one clapped no one yelled... people actually kinda just got up and walked out like Meh.

Why do people say they changed kano and kabals backstory? When they technically didnt, because in MK9 Kabal still hates kano because he blames him for setting him on fire.

Personally I really enjoyed the new version of the film. Yes, it was super cheesy in parts, but overall it was a very fun watch, and the score was so good! Really hope we get movies 2-5!

If you look at the cast list for this movie, the actor who plays Sub-Zero is listed as both Sub Zero and Noob Saibot.

the big key difference, 1995 is infinitely rewatchable while 2021 is highly not. Even Annihilation is rewatchable....

For those that did not like this new film they obviously are missing the purpose of this film.
The 2021 film sets up the stage for a hopeful franchise of several mortal Kombat movies that will bring the game to a real life universe.
1995 films opened the idea but were feasible so to graphics/stunts/and other factors.
I can’t wait for the next mortal kombat films that will come about.

When Kabal said that Kano is the reason he's in an iron lung.. I thought that meant he's the one that burned him. But in MK9 kano did put him in that thing.
In MK9, Kabal was in Stryker's team and not a black dragon-like in MK21. After burnt by Kintaro his still-living body was taken to the outer world and healed by Kano

MK 95 will always hold a special place in my heart ..as will the shocking 97 Annihilation..to some degree!, but got an open mind to see what the new one brings to the table. I'm looking forward to it
Im a huge MK Fan and I would have to say its a 6/10, Kano is the best character, funny and witty. I waited 20 years to be disappointed. Goro, Millena wished they could have had more for them. Reiko, what in the world, really they could have make up person instead!? Raiden at times was hard to understand. The trailer was way over hyped and I fell for it! if they make a number 2 they better strap it up because this was boring!!! the first MK in 1995 was way better!
I wasn’t as disappointed. I kinda knew something was wrong from the trailer, but I’m still bummed out. A Mortal Kombat movie that’s just entertaining isn’t good enough for me.
They should’ve used the same folks from the fan made “Rebirth” MK trailer that had Lateef Crowder as Baraka....that would’ve been bad ass!

Even if the villains were killed, i already can tell there are plans to resurrect them. After all, the tournament - the ACTUAL tournament - never even started. So Shao Kahn needs his warriors, and his champion shokan prince to compete if he's to claim Earthrealm legally. Otherwise we're going right into MK2 territory, and we're getting the Shokan trio together, just like we'll be seeing Noob Saibot in time, which will draw back Scorpion. I can only wonder what will set up Kuai Liang's appearance as the new Subzero. Only time will tell, of course.:D
@Sami Gibbons Maybe they will. I know for a fact Goro and Bi-han will. Goro might not even have been dead, given a shokan's incredible resilience, and was unconscious: a quick visit to the soul chamber may fix him up good and right in time for Mortal Kombat. As for Bi-Han? Nah, that fucker's dead as daylight. And given that fact, the only resurrection he's getting in terms of undead is as Noob Saibot.
Though Mileena's possible, since Shao Kahn would NEVER allow his favorite daughter to die. And it's possible with the others, but we have to wait to be sure. If not, then there are plenty others to replace them.:D
@Sami Gibbons Ah. Glad you're open-minded about the idea. And remember the small facts that are part of MK's lore. Shang Tsung invested too much in Bi-Han to let him stay dead, and Goro is still the tournament's reigning champion. Not to mention Mileena IS Shao Kahn's daughter out of favor - since he doesn't give a damn about Kitana, and never did - and is a definite resurrection must. But you're definitely right about Kuai Liang: in fact, that's what i'm hoping for more than anything, because Tundra is the one, true Subzero of this series, and successor to the name. Above all else, I want to see how he fits into the story, what his relationship is to Bi-Han is if they aren't still brothers, and what dynamic will come between him, Noob Saibot and Scorpion. Hopefully, they'll follow MKX's example, and while they do fight they don't kill each other, and they end the feud between their clans - or at least each other. Because Hanzo is more of an older brother to Liang than Bi-Han ever was.
