The Dark Side of Apollo | Greek Mythology Stories Explained

  • Apollo was one of the most worshipped gods in Greek Mythology. In fact, I don't believe that any other Greek God had more titles than Apollo: God of Light, God of Archery, God of Music, God of Healing, God of Dance, God of the Sun... and that's maybe about half of Apollo's godly titles. Basically, Apollo was the god of everything, and if there was any good that belonged on the podium of popularity next to Zeus and Athena - it was Apollo. Due to that, and due to his association with the sun, Apollo is often depicted as this radiating god of good, but that couldn't be further from the truth: Apollo committed many, many atrocities, and... I'm more than happy to highlight them in this episode:
Episode VII Of Keeping Up With The Greek Gods - The God of Light: Apollo Is Evil
Subscribe For New Episodes Every Saturday & Wednesday
    Notes:
Since this gets commented on a lot, allow me to clarify: The Greek Gods represent ideas or concepts, meaning that in the case of Apollo... sometimes the sun burns things. Sometimes illnesses take people's lives. Sometimes bad things simply happen, and the Greeks attributed that to the will of the gods. That means that whatever good they represent of whichever concept - they also represent the opposite. So, yes, them being evil comes with the territory. If you ask me, that doesn't make their actions any less evil. So if we say "but you can't look at it from today's point of view" - I think we can. It's fun to do that. We live today, and we are revisiting these gods from today's point of view, and the things they got up to.... they're hilarious. I am entertained by the Greek Gods' evil, and I hope you are too. Oh, and also:
Greek mythology is ancient - literally thousands of years old, so the material I am working with here has undergone many, many iterations. Every time I create one of these videos, I piece together the puzzle that is each god's and goddesses' tale. With how popular Apollo was, there are so many tales and so many versions to each tale - Roman and Greek - so bear that in mind. For the sake of this video - and all my videos - I try to streamline all of these tales and versions as much as possible and leave out some details that might make the videos less fun.
So... is this accurate and well researched? Absolutely. Is this the only interpretation or way of telling you about Apollo? No, this is just my way to tell the story.
Get All My Artwork & Support The Channel:
I get a lot of questions about my artwork and where it’s from or rather who draws it. Well the answer is that I create it - I don’t draw it. I use AI to create the artwork, using specific prompts, specific style influences from 18th and 19th century artists, and I spend about 6 hours per video just on the artwork. Each video has roughly double the artwork of what you actually see in the video, so a lot of it is unused. The good news here though is that you can get all that artwork on my Patreon - the artwork I do use, and the artwork I don’t use. Plus, by subscribing to my Patreon you are making a major contribution to Briefed and helping me to keep this channel going, because this is my full time job and the survival of the channel and quality of the videos greatly depends on said support. In return for supporting, you get more than the artwork though - you also get exclusive videos and producer credit, as well as access to a producer group that gets to vote on thumbnails, gets behind the scenes etc.
If you choose to become a Patron - thank you. I do not take it for granted.

You missed a major part of Apollo and Daphne's story. Apollo had angered Eros (Cupid) and so to get back at Apollo, Eros saw his affection for the water nymph and shot her with one of his lead arrows. That is what turned Daphne against Apollo, instead of falling in love with the first person she saw, she was horrified by Apollo's appearance and ran screaming for her father to save her.

So, here's the fun part. Apollo's association and connection with the sun is quite late in Greek mythology. In earlier traditions (Iliad) he is literally antagonistic and destructive, at the same time he is a healer. That's because he was the God of the Wild Hunt (Odin and Fionn Mac Cumhaill are too). This type of God is known for his violent nature, an impersonal god for everyone.

Apollo is always ambiguous. Remember, Apollo is both the Wolf killer that protected the weak and the werewolf. Apollo championed the founding of law courts and democracy and he was a patron of aristocracy. Apollo's myths are tied up in the Transformations of Greek society. The Orishas, as opposed to the Olympians, are poorly documented. Thus, only the most modern forms of the Orishas are visible to us. If we had the best literature on the Orishas during the Atlantic Slave trade, we might see the Gods of Africa supporting slavery and the attenting horrors. Shango looks better than Apollo because his faults are hidden from view.

Apollo (like Perseus, Heracles, Perun, Set, Indra, etc.), a dragon/serpent-slayer deity, is descended from the storm-god Perkwunos. While Odin (like Dionysus, Ouranos, Shiva, Osiris, Veles, etc.) is descended from Welnos - chthonic god of the night-sky (opposite of Dyeus - god of day-sky), a cattle-thief, and mortal enemy of Perkwunos.

@@mercianthane2503 I mean the dragon slayer deity is also thought to be the son of the sky god, so there's another correlation there. They're a little off in saying they're descended from Perkwunos as it's typically Perkwunos as the dragon slayer with Dyeus as his father, but I think that points more towards a transfer of traits rather than it being just unrelated. Apollo almost seems to be a reflection/inversion of the initial dragon-slayer myth with Zeus as the descendant of Ouranous, another Sky god, killing Typhon as the first dragon-slayer and thunder god, and then he sires Apollo as a new sun/sky god who in turn slays another dragon/serpent, Python. I think you should refute his claim with something a little more meaningful than a nope considering there is considerable evidence to back up his stance. Would love to hear your thoughts.

I think the concept of Apollo slaying the serpent surely might be a borrowing from the Thunderer, or, since Apollo might be the Rudra-type god in this scenario, it could represent a task that any member of the Warrior Band must accomplish: slaying a foe or beast, but I don't know who accurate this could be.
Zeus tale is not surprising, in fact I think his story is actually of the Mithraic God delivering the final blow to a Rudra-type God, or a manifestation of that god in the climatic conflict. Lugh, who equals Zeus in his theological origins, slays Balor; yet in another versions of the Cath Maighe Tuireadh, he kills Goll Mac Morna, a member of the Fianna, the Irish band of warriors, and Goll means "One-Eyed.
The slaying of the serpent does survives in Ireland in the story of Fergus Mac Leti (another identity for Fergus Mac Roích) when he kills the Muirdris and then he dies after winning the battle.

What people don't get about greek pantheom is that it reflex the people that worshiped them. They lived in a chaotic, capricious, and violent world. But the reason these characters are still relevant is because despite being gods they lived lives full of tragedy, conflict, and adversity. In this they validated said lifestyle, plus people are so focused on these stories they ignored the roles these gods played in everyday life. Zeus was the first god to break the chain of fratricide by sparing Kronos, and he didn't persecuted his sons either, as you pointed out. It is easy to be good now-a-days, people are in love with their own goodness despite enver paying any price for it. Let this sink in.

The version of Cassandra I heard was that Hera added the curse because she was on the Greek's side and feared that the Trojans would win because of Cassandra. Since no one can take back a boon from a god (not even another god) she put a caveat on it to nullify it.

Apollo was always ambiguous. He's both Apollo the Wolf slayer and Apollo the werewolf. Also the available stories about Apollo come from more than a thousand years of literary tradition. Just think of the differences between Merlin in the Vita Merlin and T.H.White's Merlin. The gods of most other traditions are either taken from near contemporary sources like the Loa or the Orishas. Or from far less mutable sources like the Shen or the Kami. Apollo represents transitional stages of Greek society from nomadic warrior tribes to the real, if flawed, democracies of the Greek city states.

@DinossauroDaAmazonia Another very good example. I once read an essay that claimed that Apollo, Lugh Lamfada, and Odin were all different aspects of an ancient solar/light/seasonal cycle god. That the radically different aspects were different aspects of nature. I'd need more evidence than he showed, but the idea is intriguing.

Hi Brifed, I'm a huge fan of your content. I've watched all of the Norse saga and now up to this video on Apollo. Was just wondering if you would ever consider doing Greek videos based on the Titans? Or perhaps the heroes of Greece like Jason and the Argonauts etc. I would also be curious to see if you would do a video on Hercules and his nine labours, since he is arguably the greatest hero of Greek mythology. Let me know what you think please 🙏🏻 please keep uploading content!!

Delphi wasent a island, Apollo wasent the God of medicine thats Asclepius, Daphne wasent a follower of Artemis, the Sahara was created by Typhon spitting fire, Hyperion is the Titan of the east, Helios was the sun god before Apollo and the version where eros struck Apollo with a love arrow to make the god fall in love with Daphne thats the greek version of the myth, and also he pierced Daphne with a led arrow so she felt repultion for Apollo

    • @Briefed_Mythology
      @Briefed_Mythology  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Daphne was a follower of artemis. There are several creation myths for the sahara, this is one if them. Hyperion is also the heavenly light, and I literally say that about apollo and helios, I also mention that about eros and Daphne - so I don't know what you mean by that.
the only thing I got wrong is that Delos is not an island, but it is by the water so that tripped me up.

Many ancient deities have both destructive and creative aspects . Apollo's role as a god of light and healing does not preclude him from also being a destroyer , just as the Sun is the source of life , it can also sear and burn . Nature has both destructive and creative power and the pagan deities embody this , it doesn't make them evil . Apollo's arrows slew the serpent Python , but they could also inflict disease as in the Iliad .

That god driving the sun was actually Helios Hyperion. Although considered as a sun god, Phoebus Apollo was not the god of the sun. And the boy who died driving the sun chariot was the son of Helios Hyperion, not the son of Phoebus Apollo. The part when they cannot go back from their promise was due to taking an unbreakable oath by the river Styx. Anyone who swore by Styx can never break their oath.

Also, a kinky detail: when Kassandra gets the gift of foresight but then rejects Apollo, the god asks for just a little kiss. She doesn't think too much of this and consents. That's when Apollo spits in her mouth and hence forth no one believe in her prophecies!

I was born a leo. So in the beginning off my study in astrology. they tell you all the good bits of apollo as the sun god. And a little of the dark side. It's only later on. That you find that apollo was a git. But some of Leo's weakness is pride and false ego. In some book I read many moons ago. So don't know if it was Greek or Roman. That apollo was the sun and Helio was the charioteer. Am still trying to see which myths of the ancestors were the worst. Greeks.are in the top 5. 1st in Google. Lol😅.I could add modern belives in this. But I don't won't to get in trouble. Lol 😊.. Great stuff. Learned a lot. 😊👍
