The Dark Percy Jackson Hollywood Can’t Show Us: Perseus

- Perseus could be argued to be Greek Mythology's #2 hero. Of course, the most known of the Greek Heroes is Herakles (aka Hercules), but Perseus was the OG. The first of the heroes, and the one whose story is deeply intertwined with that of Medusa. Perseus, unlike Percy Jackson will have you believe, is actually the son of Zeus, and... not that much of a goodie two shoes. If anything, Theseus is the greek hero that better fits the role of a teenage hero, while Perseus... well, I go in detail on Perseus in the video, so there's no need to do it here. But I figured Perseus' tale is the perfect kickstarter for Season 2 of Keeping Up With The Greek Gods, so here we are:

Notes:
The most important note for this video concerns the tale of Medusa: There is more than one version to her story, and I chose to go with the interpretation of Ovid.
Ovid, of course was a Roman writer, who was alive during the reign of Rome's First Emperor Augustus, and was actually exiled by Augustus. So, while Ovid's writings are ancient to us, they came long after Greek Mythology was established. The original tale of Medusa does not mention her being transformed from a beautiful woman - instead, in the original tale, she was always a Gorgon. She was 1 of 3 creatures that just roam their island and... there is no substance to her, other than her being a beast that men want to slay. Since mythology is all tales and stories told anyway, I MUCH prefer Ovid's rendition, since it adds more drama to the story:
Perseus has an honorable reason to slay Medusa (saving his mother being the reason), but Medusa has a tragic backstory that makes you root for her. Every story is better off when the hero and villain are not black and white, so that's why I chose to go with Ovid's version.
On that note: I'm a huge fan of mythology being retold in different versions, like what Percy Jackson is doing. Even within mythology, there are so many versions to each myth that there is no 'one true story'. So what we're doing is just adding more versions. Love it. I just wish Hollywood would show us the dark version of these heroes just once. But... they can't... I get it. That's why I'm doing it.
There is also a modern, very modern, interpretation in which Athena turned Medusa into a monster to protect her from men. That version is absolute nonsense. Complete nonsense. It doesn't make any sense, no matter how you spin it. First of all, Athena could turn her into literally anything or give her any power if she wanted to, why turn her into a monster? Second of all, Athena then literally helps Perseus slay Medusa. Like... she is an actual accomplice to Medusa's death. Make it make sense.
So, yeah... completely modern and shortsighted interpretation of Medusa's tale, and it is full of plot holes.

In the original story, medusa was necer raped, she was just part of the gorgons since birth.
A roman poet added the rape part to make it all more tragic but historically, in the greek myth, medusa was just born like this

I prefer the story that Athena felt horrible about Medusa's rape so she put Medusa on a deserted island so she wouldn't be hounded by all the male hound dogs and god hound dogs. Also the other story that Medusa was so beautiful that she was stunning. So stunning that her incredible beauty petrified any man that laid eyes on her. Either way, I have a beautiful tattoo of Medusa on my hand.

Perseus, the hero that got to have an actual happy ending 💥. Even though his journey was somewhat not the most ethical of sorts, it’s better than the stories of other heroes.

I mean technically you can never retell a myth with 100% accuracy since they change and warp over time due to the very nature of them. For example this specific retelli Ng is based on Ovid’s but the original story had Medusa born a monster to two gods. Also Medusa was killed in her sleep unlike here. I personally prefer the boss fight shown here.
I'm starting to think Athena orchestrated Medusa's assault. Medusa was getting all the attention in her sacred temple. But she was loyal to Athena and kept her vows. Knowing how her father and uncle are it wouldn't be too much of a leap to think Poseidon found out about Medusa through Athena. She was a peace offering between the two warring gods

Medusa was always a monster in Greek myths so Athena didn't do anything.
What you are describing is a Roman version by Ovid who because the Romans disliked Minerva/Athena made her look as a batch as possible.
Both the myths about Medusa and Arachnae are Ovid's.
I am starting to think that you will be sent to TARTARUS, a place infinitely worse than hell & which is the origin of the word "Torture", when you pass from this Earth.
Nothing was orchestrated, that version along with all the other atrocious acts of the Olympians was made up by the poet Ovid due to his exile from Rome and the denial of asylum from Greeks. He got butthurt and started to spread misinformation do your research.
In fact just like Caenis Medusa tried to seduce Poseidon in Athena's temple and break her chastity vow which made Athena to punish her. Please stop trying to rewrite my country's history and mythology to suit agendas.

I remember hearing this interpretation of the Medusa story from somewhere on the internet (needless to say, it isn't mine) but Athena made Medusa a Gorgon not as a punishment but as a gift. She gave her the ability to turn people to stone so that no one could hurt her or harm her ever again, and the time she is killed is to save a woman (Perseus' mother, Danae,) from a forced marriage. It was an interesting take on the story out of many interpretations that I find to be rather cool.
in this video's description, I actually touch on why that interpretation unfortunately just doesn't work in the context the mythology gives us.

Wait, I know the Greek myths have LOOOOTS of inconsistencies due to multiple narrations and stuff, but this is the first time I'm hearing about Perseus meeting Atlas and turning him to stone. Didn't the Titan have several other appearances after this one in the chronology? Like the time he helped Herakles with retrieving the golden apples?
yup, in the tale of herakles atlas is not a stone, but in perseus' tales he gets the stone treatment. just an instance of multiverse in greek mythology

That's because the Roman poet Ovid tried to rewrite out OG Greek mythology to make the gods look worse which led to many inconstances.

Medusa's story is always quite interesting and tells of how society at that time viewed women. Medusa's beauty made it impossible for her to maintain modesty in her appearance and that type of beauty drove men to lust. Even choosing to be virtuous and virginal wasn't enough. It is a reminder to women of that time that they should not over-exhibit their beauty as it can cause the wild uncontrollable behaviours of lust to be triggered in men and gods. Athena's actions towards the rape of Medusa may seem out of place to us now but we still have societies today that put the blame of sexual assault of women on the actions of women to cause men to miss behave. What is interesting to me is Athena took the image of Medusa and placed it on her shield. We will never know if it was done out of respect or as a reminder to others.
Also, it is interesting to see the rivalry between Athena and Poseidon. Their temples on the Acropolis are next to each other with Anthena's being the main one. This story is much about that power dynamic.

I'm actually annoyed with Percy Jackson on this actually since its confirmed both Roman and Greek Myths exist and they have separate forms which further begs the question on why the hell did the Greek demigods run into the Roman form of Medusa?!?! I mean I understand gods and monsters are conceptual entities that are warped and changed by humanities perceptions and belief which is why multiple pantheons and versions of the same god exist but that doesn't mean that isn't a massive plot hole for the future.
I love how you gave Perseus this epic boss fight when in reality he just killed Medusa while she was asleep. I just find that hilarious.

Remember that the story of Medusa being raped came about hundred if not thousands of years after the original myth was told in ancient Greece. It was written by a Roman dude who was doing a whole recounting of the ancient Greek myths and wrote all the gods as evil and incompetent as a way of writing against the government and corrupt higher powers at the time. In the original myths medusa most likely did just hook up with Poseidon in Athena's temple.

As a greek who was forced to real the original Greek mythology (not the fairy and rainbows versions) is full of horrible acts including. Grape, incest, cheating, innocent murder, etc. These stories are horrific and show that if Greek gods existed they would be horrible monsters.

It seems they both get bad wraps when they were both in fact a lot better gods than Zeus, Poseidon, and the like.
For example, while Zeus and Poseidon would indulge in rape and cheating fairly often. Ares and Hades were both very loyal to their respective lovers (although Hades kidnapped Persephone), with Ares even going to war for Alcippe after she was raped by one of Poseidons sons.

No Greek is a hero, that's where the term Greek tragedy come from, the point of Greek mythology is that The Mortals as well as the gods were Petty and everything they did that's why the Greek gods are so close to humans in nature.

Well, Perseus Jackson in the books being named after the old hero Perseus also better shows the improvement made between the demigods of the same name.
Perseus the son of Zeus, was one of the better heroes in Greek mythology, just left a lot to be desired.
That said, Rick did a good job at making our modern Percy basically a consciousness objector to many of the typical things the Olympians often did in regards to their demigod descendants

Cuz they’re based on people. Zeus is based on power and men of power rape women. Poseidon is based on the sea that’s why he is an enemy of Odysseus bc his voyage was at sea which was very dangerous at the time. That’s why hades captures a young girl Persephone and it’s tragic bc that’s death
Posideon hated Athena, and Athena hated him he used Medusa to get at Athena because he couldn't harm her because she was Zeus favorite child, and Athena couldn't touch him so she hurt her.
There's no account of Poseidon attacking Medusa in order to annoy Athena. That's a modern interpretation of the story based on a 19th century headcanon from the first guy who called Medusa a Priestess
