    Engine free is the true way to sail. ⛵I have my own version of this, I have a relatively lightweight boat, a international folkboat and I have a rowing platform off the transom, sliding seat, carbon fibre oars and all. Its works well but strong winds is of course a problem when going into a marina etc. I prefer to anchor and if I need to go to shore I just wait until winds are more favorable, that's sailing in my humble opinion. Maybe I should also mention that I am from the North, the origin of the Vikings. Light boats, oars and sails. The arabs can keep their fossil fuel.

      All European harbours, and most real harbours in the whole world, including the US, formally demand that any entering boat has a liability insurance. This is mostly a “recommendation” from the national and international authorities. Some ports don’t check it, but in continental Europe they mostly do. The Canaries are part of Spain, so they count as “continental”. A liability insurance is normally very low cost. 75 dollars should be easily enough to cover a full year for your boat. It doesn’t cover any damage on your own property, only what damage you may cause on other peoples property, which is normally very little, so it’s cheap.

    Lanzarote is famous for its lack of rainfall, being so close to the Sahara. Makes you wonder how they survive. So the insurance cash cow has reached the Canaries, whatever next. To keep a boat tied up in a marina in NZ requires 3rd party insurance to NZ$3,000,000

    Called by the Canaries back in the early 1950s en-route Liverpool. UK to Takoradi, The Gold Coast ( Now Ghana) I was a 6 year old going with sister, mum and dad on a 18 month tour of duty as a quarry manager for a construction firm. Passengers were taken off by ferry and goods loaded into barges, luckily dad and I were watching as my crate of toys came out of the hold and swung into a barge. Dad sorted it out and they came back on board, just imagine 18 month's and no bike, foot ball etc.
    !8 months later we flew back BOAC 4 prop something or other Accra, Tripoli, Rome to London.
    Charging so much to dump trash, no wonder there's lots floating in the sea. Thanks for posting and will check out more of your posts. Safe sailing.

    • @msf60khz
      @msf60khz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @graham smith I am sure he does, of course. But it's not that easy. Big ships do not give way to sail in the real world. Is the ship constrained by her draught, in which case she has priority? Did you notice if the towing vessel displaying the correct signs? If Kevin loses way completely will he be not under command and have priority over everything? All this comes down to the judgement of several people and it is very difficult. As with a motor car, a bit of power makes life much easier. Doing it under sail is much more difficult.

    Usually they want an insurance to cover third party damages you might inflict on others. You should get those for a reasonable price. The crazy pricing starts when you want to insure your own boat.

      @@howtosailoceans1423 I just checked and it seems, the 3rd party insurance for damages up to 7 million € (to other people's property) for Europe runs to about 90€ /year, 150€ worldwide coverage (assuming you have about 35 sqm sail area) This is what the marinas in Europe care about.
      For damages to your own boat, it gets expensive quickly and might not be worth it. A "you break it you pay it" and "you're out of luck if a hurricane redesigns the rigging" approach might be sensible.

And I can buy 6l (1.5 gallons) of bottled drinking water in my local ALDI supermarket in Spain for 59 cents (I think tap water is included free in our local marina charges) so take a taxi and shop around! I did one year there with 34 foot cat but cost got too much gave up on idea to cross the pond sold up went home. Anchored las palmas for several months two anchors but wind shift rocky bottom frequent dragging. No outboard wind always would change to be against you for row ashore. Very few good anchor spots in most islands as they are atols can be one mile deep100 yards from many shores. Teneeiffe harbour old whalers rusty things can tie up too but the whalers are used as free refugee centers for Africans to live in but never gave me problems but harbour is dirty. THAT MIGHT have changed with passing of time might be new marina there now. I use Panthius insurance based in UK third party only 52 year old boat costs €170 a year i think € 5 million cover third party and they cover most the planet but I don't know how good they are to pay out but it was the only one I could find that did boats over 50 years old. a) So we have a guy here that arrives to an island in the middle of the second wave of a pandemic and complains about being required the use of masks and decides that " it is too hot to use one and I will take it off". In case you don't know -and clearly do have not thought about-, islands have limited facilities for treatment and that is why most islands in Europe (and elsewhere) are more strict in the management of COVID. If you want to compare, check other channels for people getting to the Azores, Faroe, etc)
    Furthermore, we can all understand that you come from a country in which every day more people die of COVID than those who died in 9/11 and that has suffered already a death toll of 350.000...... but if for you that is acceptable, then go and take a walk unmasked elsewhere.
    b) It's kind of rich that a US sailor in a US sailing boat criticizes Spanish bureaucracy.... Why don't you check what a foreign sailing boat needs to do to enter and sail in US waters and compare? There are many US sites describing it. (i.e.:"It would be an understatement to say that the rules and regulations of U.S. Customs at ports of entry - and maritime law in general - are incredibly complex. It is hard enough for U.S. flagged vessels to remain compliant with all necessary requirements, but things are far more difficult if you own a foreign-flagged vessel and you're interested in bringing it to the U.S.").
    c) "Auto-insurance" sounds nice until you have an accident , you cause damage to third parties and you don't have the means to cover them.....BTW, insurance is a compulsory in most EU countries.... if you did not do your homework it is your bad... Stop whinging and whining
    d) So, here we have a guy that decides to skip Marina fees and then complain about the cost of a gallon of water whilst at the same time notices that it must rain very little in the island. It should not be too difficult to understand that water scarcity leads to a high cost..
    If your mood is to arrive to a place and be cheap, disregard regs and complain about standard procedures everywhere in the world, then, perhaps you should go somewhere else

      The funny thing about boat insurance is it usually is only good for the harbour you get it in, once you leave your country and sometime once you go out into the ocean you are no longer insured, so in other words the policy is not worth the paper it's printed on, self insurance suddenly becomes more sensible.

    It's always interesting to hear Americans' resentment when they are required to conform to another country's exigencies for entry. For non-Americans there's nothing more humiliating than going through US Customs, so your whiny ass-hurt falls on deaf ears. Your choice to self-insure might pass muster in some places, but because it's your choice as an American to not insure, your individual choice does not make it universal and Spain as sovereign nation does not have to subscribe to your personal preferences... it's not up to you to dictate what is acceptable or not in other countries. You always had the right to exercise your free-will: get insurance or leave... and it wasn't the government that "fleeced" you of $75. If your boat drifts at anchor, collides with another boat, etc, what then? Your self-insurance would cover it? Maybe the Port of Las Palmas has experienced the likes of you before... I don't know where the big surprise comes in, membership in any yacht club or marina always demands insurance. No sympathy for you! Grow up!
