Or criticism, or just any speech they don't like. You know, just another way to say they're abusing the copyright law to censor people without using the censorship word.
Yeah, this is a continuation of the old song and dance of companies thinking TH-camrs, reviewers and journalists are supposed to be an arm of their commercial branch and are supposed to exclusively sell their product. So they get pissy and offended when that is not what happens.
Angry truth, anger seeps in when you're affected by this nonsense, and it makes you twist the truth to be even more damning. Neutral hype is just relying the info, by the numbers, and positive hype is like the Bethesda showcases, where the normal and even buggy content are explained as bonus features.
Negative hype is when a controversy becomes bigger than the community of the game, I think. That is not *necessarily* the truth, people can be fooled after all, but it most often is.
All I can say is that the Wayback Machine is one of the single most important tools to exist on the internet, so frequently providing a reliable paper trail that otherwise could not exist. And also that Frost's sand garden is looking lovely!
What made this DLC controversy so notable to me were the sums involved. Video game companies trying to pull scummy crap like that is nothing new, but it generally involves small amounts of maybe of a few dozen bucks max, but with Tarkov, we're talking about special editions that cost *hundreds* of dollars, which seemed insane to me.
I could justify paying 250 bucks for the special edition of a game if it came with say a gold plated figurine of the main character, the soundtrack on vinyl, a poster hand-signed by each dev, an exclusive making-of documentary miniseries and a complimentary t-shirt. Ain't no way I can justify paying that amount for a digital copy of a game that's mostly just chock-full of cosmetics and for a game that's ostensibly still in early access or something!
@@RowbotMaster If you had a set of massive spheres dangling between your legs, would you dare doing anything at all? Who came up with the term anyway, it's not about bravery, risking those being so much as struck with a candyfloss is nothing but stupid.
It's amazing how far some businesses will go to justify ripping off their customers: redefining words, censoring criticism, changing products after purchase, flagrantly lying... and then acting like the customers are at fault when they fail.
Yep, the devs lie to customers face, get called out for it, and then retroactively try to change the wording and redefine what the term “DLC” means in order to double down and fuck over the people who supported them.
Checked the internet and the developer pulled something similar in 2018. Clearly it worked out for them back then, considering how Escape from Tarkov got really hyped up "recently" (positive hype, mind you).

It's a fucked up world, some people do just have so much money that the differemce between 60 vs 250 on a game isn't all that substantial. Which is at least kinda understandable in my opinion, when you have so much money it must be really different trying to judge the worth of something. But it wasn’t players and bad reviews, or at least not primarily. It was almost certainly that they pulled their product from storefronts AFTER RELEASE, after people had already spent money on it, effectively locking out anyone that lived in a country where PSN wasn’t available. They also silently changed their statement on the Sony site from “PS games on PC won’t require a PSN account” to “some PS games will require a PSN account on PC”. This is extremely illegal in many places, and some of the countries they delisted the game from are part of the EU, which means they were about to get sued by not just a few countries, but an entire coalition. Sony might have the money to fight a few countries off, especially poorer ones and those with fewer/no consumer protection laws, but they’re not going to be able to fend off the entire EU. Good man. I like the fallow through and address of presumed backlash. Remember to cover what you love!
wait, you mean the company that sold pre-order for an unfinished game for 250$ is pulling some shady shit? Well I never would have imagined such a thing. How audacious! How totally unexpected! How shocking! I can totally see how EFT fans were caught blindsided by such a company - after all, they've always been such reasonable and level-headed folks.
I miss the days when pre-orders involved physical things. For example, I preordered Resident Evil 5 way back in the day and got a little statue of Chris Redfield, and a few other things like an art book and a pouch with the Tricell logo. It only cost about $10 more. Now, I'd be lucky to even get a sticker for paying $50 more.
Thanks for the insight and chill vibes Frost. It’s always interesting to see more about how games and communities interact. On a related note, I recently heard there’s been another victory for democracy. And this time it’s not against bugs or bots
It's funny how much devs overlook the benefits of honesty and working with their community if money gets tight. If online costs are an issue and you don't have a recurring income source, throw up a "here's exactly what the servers cost us in detail" alongside an accurate donation tracker and a paypal link. Maybe the community will prefer cosmetics or some other mtx, then let them dictate that and provide some nice cosmetics. Hell, let community members create cosmetics that get sold and a portion of the income. Make the act of supporting the game a way of being part of the community and part of the fun, then you won't have any issues keeping servers up.
I don't really know anything about what's gone on "behind the scenes" with Tarkov throughout its life, because I don't play it and don't want to, but I've always been aware of how impressive its depiction of firearms is and for that reason always respected it. I gotta say, it makes me sad to see that a team that is evidently talented and passionate enough to make the game that they have is also sleazy enough to resort to such scumbag tactics. If developing a game for so long without funding is so difficult- and I'm sure it is- would it really be that hard to be transparent about it, communicate with players, and find a way to procure more funds without breaking promises or doing scummy shit to get it? I don't know, but for some reason I imagine that it wouldn't be too hard... but it is harder than just breaking the promises you made. The other thing that comes to mind immediately is- at what point do they decide that the game is complete and stop working on it? Is the plan to stay in "beta" forever? I don't think you get to spend 8 years selling a game that, at this point, has enough content to be a finished product, and still say that it's in beta and needs more work. What the hell ever happened to making finished games and being content with the fact that your player count will eventually taper off, but that your game is fun enough to retain relevance for many, many years?
I'm of the belief that if they had truthfully said, "We are losing money maintaining the game that people are enjoying because of a promise we made eight years ago." and then asked for some understanding from the player base, they'd have gotten some slack. As it's played out though I'm not convinced that things were so dire that what they did can be justified.
Thanks for reporting about this. Your contributions are always quality. As a long time fan of the game, BSG has totally soured me to their products. I definitely no longer trust them with my money.

Using a Zen Garden background and negative hype while discussing gaming controversies is a good standard.
Thanks for the insight and chill vibes Frost. It’s always interesting to see more about how games and communities interact.
On a related note, I recently heard there’s been another victory for democracy. And this time it’s not against bugs or bots
Because of the late upload, sadly I was unable to enjoy my Monday bagel along with cold take, but at least I can still watch cold take
Your Anti-Zen Garden is lovely.
I've never been a fan of negative hype.
I prefer positive suppression.
"Tarkov's not the only one with this kind of problem, it's just the one you've heard about." Good reminder.
I'm surprised the zen sand pit didn't end up flung out the office window by the end of this video.
This is fantastic.
I approve of the way this content was made, very intelligent.
Can't wait for the cold take on Helldivers 2.
I'm of the belief that if they had truthfully said,
"We are losing money maintaining the game that people are enjoying because of a promise we made eight years ago."
and then asked for some understanding from the player base, they'd have gotten some slack. As it's played out though I'm not convinced that things were so dire that what they did can be justified.
Thanks for reporting about this. Your contributions are always quality. As a long time fan of the game, BSG has totally soured me to their products. I definitely no longer trust them with my money.
