Centipede with the 5200 Trak-Ball is my all-time favorite. Looks and feels just like the arcade and leaves the Atari 8-bit version in the dust.

Moon Patrol is one I always enjoy playing, don't have a 5200 but I do have the Atari 8-bit computer version and just love playing.

Real Sports Baseball for the 5200 was a great game for its time.

How could you forget Robotron 2084? That’s the game everyone wants this system for. It came with a cage for
The controllers that allowed you to use both controllers for dual stick action like the arcade. If you haven’t tried it you really have to.

Just personal preference! I always found Robotron to be a bit to IDK, crowded? Messy? for my liking. It's still very impressive and getting to play with dual sticks is sweet if you actually have 2 in working condition!

Ive never played the 5200 port but I personally never cared for it much.

I never played the 5200 port but always loved that game. I first got into Smash TV then found Robotron sometime after and liked it even better.
Just watching gameplay footage, the 5200 seems a bit choppy compared to the 7800 and arcade but otherwise seems just as fun.

I don't mean this in a snobbish way, but I think the 7800 version is better by a hair. The 7800 version also has twin stick controls, but there are modern day twin-stick joysticks you can buy that use two 8-way digital joysticks. The only area the 5200 version has over the 7800 is the POKEY sound is always better than the TIA.
Still, I would argue that Robotron 2084 is the 7800's game to buy the system for.

My tastes definitely lean more towards arcade titles. Those are what I first think of when I think of the 5200

Thanks for this! I have 3 5200 base units but only one power supply. My first one I got in 1983 from a relative because it wasn't working and he knew I was big into electronics. Turns out the internal PS connector had broken off, so an easy fix. I picked up a WICO joystick (with the little pigtails to plug in the std 5200 controller). That WICO stick still works today. Berzerk is 100x better with that stick. My favorite 5200 game is the Star Trek one. I guess I am biased because I loved the arcade version of that game. My local arcade (yeah, kids, what's that?) had a sit down version of the ST:SOS and I used dump $4 or $5 worth of tokens into that thing every time I went there.

Atari 5200 is a misunderstood system. It's not nearly as bad as people claim. I like the games for it.

The hardware has some pretty big flaws and it's timing was quite poor, but it's got some great games!

@@jobadirk6371 ah yes the 80s where we started calling something “bad” that was really good. Michael Jackson had his 1987 album “Bad” and the Weird Al parody came on an album with parody cover art called “Even Worse” b/c it was that incredible!

Robotron 2084. It's perfect with the stock controllers and the coupler that came with it.

    In no particular order:
    -Joust
    -Robotron
    -Hero
    -Pitfall II
-Blueprint (know that's an odd pick, but I had a blast with that game as a kid)
Honorable Mentions: Mario Bros. and Wizard of Wor

I think you're spot on when you said while the library is small, there are many excellent titles. My top 5 would definitely include Moon Patrol, Robotron, and Defender. There so many to choose from to round out -- Qix, Dig Dug, Vanguard, Jungle Hunt, Scramble... so many excellent arcade ports. In 2024, I have access to digital joysticks for the original hardware so that makes the experience more optimal than the OEM controller.

Interesting list. I was a Colecovision kid at the time, so my experience with the 5200 was limited to what was on store displays (not to mention, I didn’t know anyone who had a 5200). How about a Colecovision top 5?

  • @jacobjones9071

Man the sound of the 5200 always impresses me, it's probably partially due to the 7800 being such a step down

I probably played Moon Patrol and Jungle Hunt the most on mine back in the day. I agree that Ms. PacMan was one of the best and a must have on that system. It was so popular at the time and a big leap closer to the arcade version after the 2600 version.

I loved playing Mario Bros. Also great: Joust, Countermeasures, RealSports Soccer, Star Raiders, Moon Patrol, Megamania, and maybe the best was Miner 2049er (in that big red cartridge!!)

Only one person said Space Dungeon. It is a 5200 exclusive and is probably the very best game for the system.
In no order -Space dungeon, Moon Patrol, Kangaroo, Centipede, Popeye.

I'm surprised they didn't get berzerks sequel frenzy ..... unless Coleco had an exclusive deal for its port ....and 5200 Mario is uglier than 7800 Mario ... although defender on the 52 is ]closer to the arcade then the 2600 version have you done the 7800 yrt?
