Thin bleach (the cheaper stuff) will work. You can get food grade bleach. Hydrogen peroxide is the safest one to use. Hydrogen peroxide is even fish safe. I use it when my large fish tank gets messed up with nasties or if the fish show signs of fin rot. Literally 2 drops of hydrogen peroxide in a 150 litre tank, once every couple of weeks if your leaving the same water in there for a period of time. There are two types of hydrogen peroxide that are generally for sale. Both will work. One is classed as food safe but has a short shelf life. The other is the type sold for bleaching hair etc and that has a stabilizer in to make it last a couple of years. With a carbon filter neither will be an issue for you. Much safer than any type of bleach. They use hydrogen peroxide in rivers when there has been a hazardous chemicals leak. To add oxygen to the water to save the fish and plants. The increased oxygen levels kill off bacteria and nasty slime you get building up in the water. If you leave the water in the tank for a few weeks during the summer you will need to treat about once a week because the heat breaks down the hydrogen peroxide. Plus you can use diluted hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle to clean surfaces and even clean cuts but do your research before using on the body.

@@simplestuff3895 No problem mate. Over years of running fairly large fish tanks.(200-300+ litre) When I had a fish die and I didn't notice it. (especially if it was a larger fish) it sends the water toxic, for all the other fish to live in. In a normal home fish tank it would usually mean the loss of many other fish, even if you managed to swap most of the water out because it biological and effects the whole eco system inside the tank. 2 or 3 drops of hydrogen peroxide usually saves all the other fish and doesn't hurt the aquatic plants either. It just clears unwanted fungal growth/slime from the tank without harming anything else. Amazing stuff. It literally adds extra oxygen molecules to the water. Anything toxic or slimy or bacteria in water thrives in none oxygenated water.

@andrew hodgkinson that explains why the few fish that survived a powercut last year all died shortly after, despite me changing the water.
