This is a neat system, but i think scan n go is a little more accessible since everyone already carries a smartphone and they can see their cart anywhere in the store. It's more interactive

From what I understood: The ESL works as a front for the customer, however the server/backend does the actual payment. Let’s assume that the system is connected to the merchant’s bank account, in the case of using credit card or debit card, the ESL for payment reads tags from the card then send those tags to the server that does the payment processing?
So there’s no Cardholder Verification Method if the card is stolen? And there’s no limit to what a person can buy?

For the customer card, the customer pre-registers his cards, OR fills the customer card with money. This makes so no cardholder verification is required as its a "pre-verified situation". In mobile app, customer usually has to verify in-app with thumbprint. Same with anonymous mobile checkout (google/apple pay).
For the anonymous checkout with card, it will send a request to the bank for a pin-less transaction. Depending on how many pin-less transactions the customer have done in the past, and the total purchase amount, the bank will check if the transaction can go through. Usually, the limit is somewhere about 25-50€ and max 5 transactions in a row without verification.
It varies from bank to bank. If the bank approves the pin-less transaction, no problem. If not, the shelf label could ask the customer to go to a PIN-pad, which could also be placed in the checkout area, where customer taps the card, and then it will in the same way, finalize transaction but this time, customer has to enter PIN aswell.
