I checked some of "artists" that were very vocal pro-AI art and said it would unlock their creativity, increased "their skill", and have limitless possibilities, etc... The last they post their AI slops were few months ago... Yeah nowadays no one is gatekeeping art, there are plenty of resources. If they didn't become creatives without AI, they wouldn't become creatives with AI.
Thank you very much for your opinion and thoughts. It is very painful to watch how people who have never created anything get into creativity and behave more brazenly than artists who trace and pass off other people's art as their own. Experience helps you to calmly and soberly assess the situation, and it seems that I am soaked in your Vibe.
On the Ai director thing, I feel like if you needed Ai to make your idea, it was never a good idea to begin with. If it’s truly a great idea/ story, just write it, or pick up a pencil and start drawing today. I’ve been a 3D artist for about a decade now but about a year ago I had an idea for a story I really wanted to make into a comic so I started getting serious about my 2D art skills as well. I’ve improved a ton in that time and I’ve only grown more passionate about this project. Imo a great idea will push you to gain the skills required to bring it into reality, if you think you’d lose interest by the time your skills are “good enough” it’s not a good idea. Hell even if you suck if it’s really a good idea it’ll resonate with people. In the time Ai has come out and become mainstream you could’ve massively improved as an artist instead of making excuses and hiding behind Ai. I also want to add, what matters rarely is the idea itself but the execution. I’ve watched so many shows that will have an amazing premise, but get absolutely ruined in the execution. Ai does the entire execution part of the equation, you need a person with an experience, perspective, and vision otherwise the end product will always be thoughtless slop
lol I came from a comic background and got into 3D because of a story I was inspired to do lol. Would you mind sharing your socials so I can keep an eye out for it when its completed? Thanks in advance.
Your quote on Craig Mullins from last video you made about AI, "The more complicate tools become the more similar art becomes.", really nailed it for me on using ai.
The biggest disadvantage of LLMs is that those models do not construct art. They neither build composition, nor perspective. They don't start with character roughs for posing or anatomy, they don't act purposely. They are "drawing" like a fan artist who manages to teach themselves by tracing over their favorite artists (and memorizing it all) but never gets to learning fundamentals. Which is where the AI lack of consistent output comes from. This is inherit limitation of the tech. This won't go away even if the tech will be faster and more convenient to use. They can't do sequential storytelling art because of limitations at the very core of this tech.
I'd say yes to a second Ara tome! I love the art style and although it's in french, I appreciate that it's drawn in such a way that I kinda can get an idea on what's going on without reading the text, based on the expressions, body language and composition. Also, it got me to try and learn french so that I can really find out what's going on 😁
Amazing art, Tim! On the AI topic I had some thoughts I've heard few people discuss. Simply I don't believe it is possible for mankind to create a sentient machine, but as a Christian I do believe in a spiritual world and I do believe that spirits are able to impact the physical world. This being said I believe that there will be something called artificial intelligence but it will be some kind of evil spirit guiding the computer program or whatever it is. I first heard this kind of theory on the youtube channel 'haunted cosmos' if you're curious. Anyways great video Tim, your skill is admirable.
Being able to Draw is so much more than making appealing pictures. And I think that's a big part in why AI generated pictures (I will never call it art) are so 'empty' In order to get good at drawing you have to learn SOOO many things! Almost on a spiritual level 😂! And the frct that you just press a few buttons and the computer does all the work for you takes away all the thinking that should go into making a piece. I am currently learning how to draw and will participate in a 2 year programm to kickstart my fundamentals. And I LOVE to learn how to draw. I love everything about it. I love how it changes how I see the world, I love how it changes me as a person and how good it feels to put in a lot of work and finally see results. In a way, I am very sorry for these 'AI-bros', because they don't experience all of this. They absolutely don't get what the point of art really is and how wonderful the act of producing it is. (but the lack of empathy and the audacity of most of these people are driving me up a wall....so I'm not 'REALLY' sorry 😂)
I had a situation in previous work where I had to draw short cutscene comics for a short deadline. I always had trouble with character consistency so I had to quickly figure something out. I searched for some actor photos that fit the role, sketched something similar in front and side view and then I used Looxis Faceworx to make a simple 3d head from those sketches. In the end I refined those a little bit in Blender. It was a very hacky way but it somehow worked. Of course it would be better to get good skills of drawing consistent faces for comics but there was no time back then. As for AI videos. Going together with a group to a location to shoot a film is like a fun adventure. People exchange ideas so it makes the team more excited and contributes to the quality of the film. Making whole movie in AI would feel quite empty in comparison or even quite lonely. On practical side I think more reliable way would just be to buy camera and film it. AI tools would probably be helpful to compliment VFX side and I think that's probably where it will be applied.
Tech bros end goal AGI's idea came from cyberpunk stories maybe some older ideas too and I'm into that stuff but as you I don't think we'll have this machine god anytime soon or ever.
Hi! I'm sorry for the off-topic question Tim, but I've been worried for a long time about the complex drawing techniques presented in the book "Scott Robertson how to draw" do I need to be able to do such things if I want to do only character design? Or is it not so important? These are very difficult things for me and they have not been given to me for a long time and most people advise me to master it.
Yeah great question. I just had this book out while I was making the latest video. I'll address your question the next time I do one of these art ritual videos!
For me personally the whole point of design and art is having a lot of fun with the process than just getting to the end. So that being said I still can't understand why someone wants to cut away all the fun parts and just jump to the end with an AI? Smh.
There is a world of difference between generating raw and varied images along a given theme, but getting into the weeds with very specific design and art direction, nuanced changes, and feedback that is difficult to even put into words or convey.. well that's a whole different beast. I'm a concept artist for games and film, and for tasks such brainstorming or creating visual noise and complexity to use in creating a larger, more expansive piece, AI is ridiculously fast and powerful. But for other tasks where super specific art direction and design and iteration of abstract aspects of the art is in play, AI is next to useless. Some types of art lend themselves to AI, and some do not. Modern professional artists in fields like concept art will generally need to at least get a grasp of what it offers, when to use it, and what it limitations it has. Just like 3D, it can be an incredible time saver and powerful tool, or basically useless for your specific needs. Strong foundational art and design skills will never go out style though. Knowing how to synthesize the raw pixels and components it spits out, and work them into your pipeline with creative intent, modify, iterate, refine, mold to your will... that comes down to the human mind that cannot be replaced any time soon. Maybe some day, but not yet.
the way i see it , what is the point of someone playing a video game? its to engage with the media , to get some simple satisfaction from a job well executed , some may consider it art depending on the game. Why would i ever give that up? why would i ever let a robot , to play the game for me? Same for art.
I still have the same take as I did in 2016. If there's a way to get to the result that's chepear and faster and doesn't require a human brain, Ai will find it just like it obliterated the best player in the game of Go. The idea that idea generation has to be the way humans do it makes no sense.
the only person whose concern is whether a project is successful is the slave. the master is more speculative. if you want ai to create what has gone before then you will be concerned about success
Every assumptions about AI, and about how technology would change the world, are based on the false idea that everyone out there is an early adopter for whatever they put in front just because it is "brand new"....the classic "Falacia ad novitatem" which is to pretend that something is mandatory better just because it is new....As well as some people think that whatever they say, everyone out there will follow just because they have a voice to tell things....what makes me laugh of those people is that in most cases they are against religion, and most in particular against catholics, but they would love people having faith in them as we have in Catholic faith.....at the end, they are just jealous.
While I agree with your sentiment about ai, I disagree about your comment that everyone can write a novel. Well, perhaps everyonehas the potential, but it won't be quality writing, at least at first without practiceor experience. Writing a good, cohesive story with a tight structre and consistent characters with arcs is difficult. It's as much a craft as drawing. Yes, most people can string together a sentence, but writing a 90 to 150k word story is a different beast. I'd say it's quite similar to creating a comic book. There's designwork that goes into a novel, there's planning and revision. And while yes, you could write 10k words a day, if you want to keep your tendons happy, you won't do that over more than a couple of days. I know because I had to take a writing break earlier this year after putting too much stress on my hands from writing 7k words a day over 2 weeks. Sorry if my comment sounds harsh, but with the ai bs nanowrimo just pulled, I'm a bit sensitive over the claim that writing is easy and that writers should use chatgpt. It's not easy. It involves study and practice, just like becoming proficient at art does. Sincerely, a writer who tries to get better at drawing so she can enhance her work with illustrations.
i guess that is comment about "everybody can write ..." is more a way to tell it's accessible, and explain that's it's more complicated than that : everybody learn how to write words and construct sentences at school ( contrary to drawing, music or composition ), plenty of tutorials, methods and how to are available from a lot of successfull authors ( the idea of a gatekeeping in art is so ridiculous, never before was so much materials available on anything to anyone ) , and anybody can have an idea, so yes, technically everyobody "can" write. But as he demonstrate after, it's far more complicated than that. Being accessible doesn't make it easy :) At least that's how i understand his idea.

There’s no such thing as “A.I. art”. There’s artists and then there’s thieves which is what an “AI artist” is: a thief.

Really loved hearing all your thoughts about AI from a creators point of view. Great work as always Tim 😉

Back to having fun! Love this.
Great video! Fun to watch and see your process.
Great instructive video. Thanks heaps!
Easy learning with your tutorial, thank you sir
