They have made some incredibly huge mistakes, but I think we also need to come to terms with the cost of MMO’s. They require a stream of revenue to remain profitable against the cost of maintenance… and that requires a higher player count than most can afford…. It’s why most of the ones that actually have any longevity are subscriptions or have members passes. I.E. RS and WoW.
I think the Sad fact is that the American market isn’t big enough for the amount of MMOs that we’re pushed out post WoW.
The player bases are too small to justify the actual server maintenance costs of a lot of them.
And Bungie somehow designed the PERFECT rock and a hard place.
      1. They made a destiny 2 AT ALL. The proven model of expansions and updates have shown a better rate of player acquisition and retention. WoW has rebooted its world like 4 times at this point and it’s still WoW. All bungie did was Alienate old audiences and confuse new ones.
      2. They created no reliable revenue stream… no system of value such as a subscription or a members pass.. everything they have offered to make money have either been not worth it, or have been expansions, which can bring in new players, but they are also expensive to make. Instead of developing in game networks that were not base game but were worth paying for… they just made micro transactions.
      3. THEY VAULTED CONTENT! Look… MMO worlds will change, it is their very nature as games…. But they just went full Disney and locked content people already bought. They clearly believed that the game file was too large and scared off new players…. But that was because the content was not worth the file size…. Not because of the large file.
Destiny 1 was fresh, interesting, intuitive, and added new things to the genre…. Destiny two only really has interesting lore at this point. The changes they have made have none of the spark of the first game.

It’s a sad realization, Destiny would’ve still had micro transactions if they continued under Activision, but atleast a sense of quality would be ensured.
Bungie was well within their right to ask for micro transactions after the split when they were single for the first time in half a decade, but now they have developed well past they size they were even with activision and it’s subsidiary studios( high moon and vicarious visions) but now they have grown to the state of my notoriety, more funding, and more bullshit.

Destiny 2 had my time and attention, and I watched it fall apart and become inaccessible to me and a bunch of my friends watching my stuff get nerfed to make way with new stuff they wanted to feel cooler, getting things I paid for taken away or being locked behind a new pass to access. I had to watch one of my favorite titles slowly turn against the players and become a heartless scam for cash. Its like having a best friend and watching them turn into someone else who doesn't care about you or anything anymore outside of status and popularity, but in this case it is just money. Destiny 1 was a fantastic experience, imperfect sure, but it was a fun social experience. Now it's literally the most shameless cash grab imaginable. Better to spend your money on a complete game and a complete experience, rather than getting manipulated into paying for breadcrumbs. If you liked Destiny, I'd recommend playing the Halo games instead if you haven't already

When D2 came out I was obviously very excited at first, but then that interest just faded away after I was done with the base game. It was never really the same, it was pretty overwhelming from the get-go. Too many microtransactions and everything in general just felt off. 1. The communities complacency towards all of the store changes.

I'm not even a D2 player but this was a great video. It had good points, in-depth research and convincing arguments backed up by facts and instances of Bungie stuffing the game full of microtransactions. The part about the dungeon keys not being included in the season pass reminded me of the Amazon dark pattern lawsuit. Amazon were sued because they made the process of cancelling an Amazon Prime subscription so confusing that most people couldn't opt out and cancel their monthly recurring charges. So, the money just kept flowing out of their accounts, arguably against their will.
Similarly, live service games today make content access and purchase so confusing that people pay out of frustration and desperation. Most players just want to experience new content and play with their friends. They do not have the time to read through and understand how exactly to make the best, most economic purchase. I wonder if the audience would look more favourably upon a simple base price increase from the current $60 instead of dealing with these questionable practices.

Another problem for a f2p player, like myself, is the lack of depth in all the things that you can do. Yes, there is a seemingly vast amount of f2p content on first glance, but once you've played a couple hours on one of them (like dungeons), you've basically seen all that the f2p side that there is.

What kept me playing the game for 200h was the campaign (back when there was one) & messing around with friends in-between it. That at least made the repetition of the limited f2p content seem worth it because you had the long-term goal of finishing the campaign.
Now I only really log on for the 'ooh, flashy effects' feeling, and that's not enough for me to justify 100+ gigs of space for the game nor 100 USD, which is enough to take my family out to a fancy dinner here in South Africa.

I remember arguing with people on r/DestinyTheGame subreddit years ago about whether destiny was actually free to play, of course i was always down voted into oblivion by these people. Bungie could do no wrong in their eyes. I would say things like, "what free to play game charges you 40 dollars for expansions?" And they would reply with, "the base game *is* free to play!" I've spent hundreds of dollars on Destiny 2 *after* Bungie started calling it a F2P game.
But it's like cross said here, that's like 10% of the game so it's actually more like free trial than free to play. And I would draw comparisons with other, actual F2P games like Apex Legends where the entire game is free to play, you pay for none of the game's content outside of some cosmetics.
Now aztecross makes a video about it and 1.4 million people watch it. Wonder what those people on r/DestinyTheGame have to say about this now... haha.

I haven't been playing Destiny for a while and just happened to get recommended this. It really speaks to a lot of the issues I had been having around the time I stopped playing. For me, the tipping point was when I realized midway through Season of Dawn that the storyline and game mode I had been enjoying would just be going up in smoke in about a month. At that point I started logging in less and less, and every time I would get a craving to play a game I'd end up hearing about some new horseshit like them scrubbing out the entire Red War campaign and half the planets or the separately paywalled dungeon. As much as I do still crave playing the game and would love to go back, I refuse to engage with the kind of blatant nonsense that Bungie keeps shoveling out.

The game is designed to pull in people with either gambling addictions (loot, gear, and weapon rolls from engrams) or those with addictions to the short dopamine bursts from cosmetics. I've always hated Destiny at its core even though I would play with friends running dungeons or Trials of Osiris.
Something happened. A schism of sorts. Almost as if you had a gf who would make you comfortable and content, only to eventually manipulate you into doing things that benefitted her at the cost of your own happiness; what you may have considered immoral and unjust in the beginning, later, you would be doing just that.
The aforementioned paragraph summarizes what has happened to the player base as a collective, overall. Many players with standards and lines-drawn-in-the-sand left Destiny, cutting ties with the shady business practices. However, many more players stayed, along with new ones arriving, replacing those with integrity; outnumbering them. What we have now are a mass of players who are seduced and weak, lost in this abyss of Destiny's money-milking design model. They are feeble and have no purpose. Think of simps who support OnlyFans models. Thinking those girls give a crap about them. They don't. Big surprise. Same thing with Destiny. They mindlessly deploy their hard earned money, or max mommy's credit card to chase that high of which Destiny completely throttles, leaving those lost souls permanently stuck, like in Davy Jones's Locker; the final resting place for those travelers.
I've come from a time when Halo: CE arrived. So I have seen it all; the degradation of a once great company with just morals built into its core. Now, a completely revamped hull and a shell with its integrity shed, this reformed company sits on its throne, like the dragon who sat on its mountain of gold under its wings. No one can challenge it or its plunder for it is a testament of its accomplishments.
The dragon cannot be defeated. Only replaced with one that is greater.

Not only was I welcomed with a $50 price tag on an expansion that reviewed poorly and after researching further, I wasn’t interested in, but I also found out I can’t even snag the season for $10 like usual. Everything else was still there for me that I’ve purchased previously, but of course I’ve already played through that and I’m just not interested in anything PvE related right now in Destiny 2. So that leaves PvP for me, which I was glad to see Supremacy return, and the Iron Banner change that allows me to compete without light level considered… but that was it. It’s been about 6 months since I played and there’s no new maps, modes, etc. I’m just not interested enough in Destiny to bother with it this year apart from occasional PvP. Maybe final shape will be better but I’m done with buying things in advance. I would rather basically have the whole story and gameplay spoiled for me so I can experience a worthwhile purchase than purchasing in advance and getting nothing out of it. That’s where I’m at with Destiny and that’s why I’m not spending any money on the game this expansion. What's so hilarious is that about a year and a half ago I made a reddit post on the exact points you made, including all the pay to win aspects of destiny 2. I got like 40 down votes and a ton of angry comments. I never use reddit and that was my first post, I was upset with how destiny became so pay to win and wanted to express that somewhere, I ended up just deleting the post after so much negative feedback. Sucks that it has to come to this point but I am very glad you were able to make a video (a reputable voice within the destiny community) and have positive feedback and make an actual damn point. I appreciate that.

I got lambasted for pointing out the Three of Coins tomfuckery 4-5 years ago. Players tried to defend Bungie for not quickly removing or patching the bugged PAID consumable that increased exotic drop rates. One player posted on social media that irrefutably proved the Three of Coins didn't work AT ALL due to some bug. In fact, they kept the Three of Coins in the store WEEKS after that became well-known on social media. I got the, "well, video game development is hard; they can't fix everything right away" line, despite Bungie very quickly fixing beneficial glitches within days, sometimes HOURS after being known.
I've backed a lot of small indie teams with shoestring budgets. There were game-breaking bugs that were fixed within 90 minutes after just a few players reporting that on the forums. For Bungie, a well-oiled and large AAA developer to pull that greedy nonsense is INEXCUSABLE. Bungie was very clearly exploiting the players who don't go on social media to find out about glitches and bugs.

The microtransactions are just one aspect of why the game has turned so bad. IMO, the game was most fun in the first 3 years after it launched. Then it was one disappointment after another. They changed the voice actor and then killed my favorite character Cayde; they turned the game I paid $90 for into F2P; they introduced sunsetting and removed 60% of content, including my favorite raids and activities; and all the new content after that were not fun or just downright disappointing. I legit miss the first 3 years of Destiny 2.

Right before they changed the way you earned bright dust to drain the player economy. This was also the season where the changed bright engrams from dropping current seasonal cosmetics to global cosmetics. You went from getting 90% of cosmetics naturally during your playtime and then maybe topping up with the ones you didn't have with bright dust to almost never getting what you want unless you paid real money.

Genuinely with all my heart, thank you for making this video. For a MAJOR Destiny content creator to finally call them out in a formal way, is such an important step forward. Thank you for fighting the good fight, because to be honest with you, I pretty much gave up. I joined Destiny on PC way back when it was still on freaking battlenet. I adored Destiny 1 from afar due to health complications not allowing me to operate a controller, so I jumped at the opportunity to play it on PC. I watched the entirety of Destiny 1 as a audience member, so that should give you an idea of how much I loved this franchise.
So it breaks my heart to see it slowly sink when it comes to player satisfaction. I've made a couple of TH-cam comments here and there, replied to a couple of folk, made way too many Reddit posts, all about the monetization of the game. But with Lightfall, I just kinda gave up. Every time I would speak out about the anti-consumer practices Bungie is employing, I would always get vitriol from the white knights of Bungie. "Don't like it don't play it", "Bungie has to make money somehow", "What a troll, Destiny 2 is the best F2P game out right now" etc etc etc. Even my friends have given up, they pounce at every opportunity to spend money on the game, for better or for worse. New DLC preorder just dropped? Let me hop on that. New pass to access content that was previously accessible as part of the entire DLC? Where's my credit card. New ornament that makes the exotic gun silver instead of orange? Hell yeah. It's disappointing.
Their arguments are so infuriatingly wrong, because when I try to explain my point or perspective to the people defending these practices, I'm met with a brick wall. Don't they see that I love Destiny as much as them? For example, the Destiny 2 is free to play thing. I've compared Destiny 2's "free to play" to FFXIV's Free trial, to show just how BS the statement for Destiny being free to play is. It's way closer in scope to FFXIV's free trial, in comparison to true F2P games that you brought up like Warframe.
My breaking point was the 30th anniversary "expansion". I did not buy it. I refused, it went against everything I stood for. I only got it when it was offered for free via Epic games. The only reason I had the Dungeon Pass in Witch Queen, was because the entire deluxe package was on sale for 40% off. And when Lightfall came out, the only reason I bought it was for friends. I did not buy the Season of the Deep. I, someone who AVIDLY watched from the sidelines in Destiny 1, consuming content for something I literally could not play, and playing since the absolutely awful Day 1 for Destiny 2 on PC, did not buy the latest season. And I don't think I'll even buy any of the seasons left in this DLC cycle. I just can't. I can afford it, but why should I spend it? I could spend the same amount of money on the season on an older AAA hit, or an indie game and get WAY more time and value for it.
I am a staunch advocate for consumer focused monetization, but it's so god damn futile. It's tiring, it's numbing, it's frustrating, it's depressing and it's just.... shite. Every point you made in this video, was 100% correct. It's factually true, they're not even opinion points. Every argument I've made in my entire time playing Destiny, you've represented in this video clearly. From Dungeon Keys, to the transmog situation. And I love, and thank you for it. And yet, I expect nothing from this. This community, with all the good that's come from it, has battered me down so much when it comes to the monetization conversation. I hope something comes from this, and I wish you THE MIGHTIEST OF PRAYERS, that you don't get submerged in vitriolic hate by the white knights defending Bungie. Because I couldn't handle it.
I love your content, and will continue to watch your channel for you, and for the editing. Sure, I'll come back when Final Shape arrives, only because I'm way too deep at this point. After that though? I don't think I can play support Bungie with Destiny anymore. I think I will go back to being just an audience member, just watching from the sidelines like I did with Destiny 1. Only this time, I have the option to actually play it, I just choose not to.
Edit: Well, my friends who gave up found your video. Literally the first words they said were
"1: tbf as bad as it is, this is the norm. Look at Diablo, damn near $30 every set
    2: Every game fr
1: yeah D2 gets called out as if it's the only one doing it
2: It's basically free money for any company
3: the problem isn't game companies, you'd be dumb as shit in todays world to not grab that free bag".
    Ladies and gentlemen, my friends.

As someone who took a break and is now currently on a break from destiny again, it was overwhelming to come back. There are too many paid things, and locking Ghorn behind a $20 price tag was an absolute smack in the face, they knew full well what they were doing and what they are currently doing. It's a shame because I and I'm sure like many others thought them going solo was going to improve the game but when everything is nickeled and dimed, I begin to wonder if they were better off staying with activision. One of the best pieces of content on D2 I've ever seen on the platform. Thank you, Cross, you really went out there saying out loud what most of the community currently thinks of Bungie, while perfectly conveying the idea of this downward spiral straight to hell that Bungie has built over all this years. It's really sad to look to the past and say to yourself "remember when Prophecy was given to us for free?", when, in the meantime, they keep "improving the free-to-play experience" by giving us back content we already paid 35$ for back in the days while keeping removing content we paid 40$ for (or should I say 50$ now?) just in one year. But what really makes all of this unbearable is this costant feeling you have while playing the game, just like a ghost whispering in your ear at all times, that keeps telling you that Bungie isn't putting enough effort in what they do for D2 because they are focusing on another project to make more money, and all that is going on in D2 is just duct tape to prevent the boat from sinking, while squeezing as much money as they can from it before they can't keep it afloat anymore. I'm not talking about PvP alone, it's a feeling I got during all of Lightfall, ESPECIALLY during the RoN race. But, personal feelings aside, I want to end this wall of text by thanking you again for this great piece of criticism and your balls of steel, so... Thank you, Cross.
