When news about the radical "Line City" first broke, it raised as many questions as it did answers. Why build a city in the middle of a desert, why a line? Mirrored walls? Taking in pieces it seems a little crazy, but there's a lot to this story, and now that they've officially broken ground and started the project, I think it's time we dig deeper into NEOM and Why it just might matter to us all. Nice intro. There is so much more to this "concept city", from societal, to civil engineering, to legacy.
So... A dystopian city in the making? The rich will live at the top while the slaves imported from India will live at the bottom.

This is going to be a waste of money
Throughout history there have been a lot of the “perfect” city plans. I can’t think of one that has actually come to fruition based on the original concept. I think this one is going to go the same way. They will build a relatively small section of it and then the project will slow to a stop.

The engineers and architects are probably just waiting for less economic uncertainty before leaving the project. They are likely being paid a lot to work on a project that will take decades to complete. That gives them a lot of time before they need to bounce out to avoid the career hit when it comes crashing down. That's not even considering the graft and corruption opportunities. Lots of workers are going to retire on this project, and with project delays, entire careers might be spent working on it. I'm sure some of their workers will just want to be a part of something new, but most probably just want a steady paycheck. In a large project like this, it's easy to pass the blame down the line when something fails.
This is sadly what often happens on many mega projects that fail. Hopefully this will be done in functioning stages so that at minimum at least a portion of it can function vs an entire failure.

@@TwoBitDaVinci They won't stop it unless they are forced to. Like the F14 I think? By the time they realized it was going to cost way over the budget, the powers that be decided they were to far into it to stop. So Congress through more money at it. Two or three times. The same will happen with this project most likely. Even the screwups will be beneficial in the long run, as they'll lead to innovation to solve the problems created by the incompetency of previous employees. Still, I'm betting it will cost a lot more and end up being much shorter in length by the time they finish.

That is exactly what i was thinking.
Why should they go out if everything is available inside? Where they should go when they going out? Build sand castles in the middle of the desert? With the long span of 170km and the height of Eiffel tower, I'm sure there are plenty indoor activities for them to live without having to concern about scorching heat,scorpion,camel poops or mummies attack. This huge kingdom isn't that populous. Plenty of things can be done in that place which they couldn't do in the old traditional city planning.
Ruthless autocrats, especially if they are insanely wealthy, can engage in all kinds of megalomaniacal vanity projects. In the case of this dude, he’ll need to set aside some extra space to bury the body parts of people he has had dismembered.
From a private contractor point of view this sounds like a Nightmare job. One of those job's where the client has ideas but hasn't actually thought out "how are we going to make this ACTUALLY, How is this going to go with this? And so on, and so on, and so on... You get the point lol
Just keep working and getting paid (if they pay you) until they tell you to stop.

Sandpiercer. Sounds scary hopefully people learn lessons from the oracles of sci-fi but sadly we often dont.
Hopefully it doesn't go that route.
A circle is a much better idea. You then build a transit system that is modeled after the roads in Paris. You would be able to get anywhere in the city with 1-2 train transfers, each taking at most a couple minutes. You could have a train that moves less than half the speed of the one you need for the line and get there faster. A square is also pretty good, as you could get anywhere in the city with one train transfer. But to get to the exact opposite side of the city would be slower than a circle.
They have the third dimension for that. That's why they're building vertically - it gives them a (vaguely) circular shape with a linear surface footprint.
I'm not convinced it will work, but "its not a circle!" is the least of the flaws with this design.
Technically this is not just one "city" ... People don't need to travel from one end to the next on daily or even weekly basis

Thing with expremintal projects is that you accumulate data gradually, and see what works. So that losses are not that big on failing ideas. Here, though, everything is seemingly wacky from start to end.
What befuddles me more with linear design, is that has to be self-sustaining in each of its segments - it’s so easy to cut their connection between each other. In a circular design you can circumvent damaged paths.
This is a new but really relevant argument that you are making. Haven't seen this even considered by anyone anywhere before.

Not really. That middle "distribution" layer kind of solves that problem as goods from one end could be directly shipped to the other end in relatively short order.
In theory at least. We'll see how well it works in practice.
In some ways though, this is an even sillier argument than "but circles are better!" That one is a little less intuitive to see the proposed solution (vertical design) because its rare. What you're worried about on the other hand is equally true of well.. any city. No city on the planet is 100% self-sufficient. There isn't a whole lot of food grown in New York for example - its all trucked in from farms in the interior or shipped into the ports.

It's a strange design from an urban planning point of view. I remember from my studies in architecture that the one thing you don't want in city design is a linear city as travel distances become really big really quick. One of the main examples of a modern, functional city we learned about was the Ville Radieuse by Le Corbusier with its separate residential and commercial zones connected via underground transit and its vertical villages. As part of our studies we did a semester looking into the vertical city by designing a vertical city of 1 km high, which posed several challenges like (obviously) the structure needed to support such a city but also how to design the vertical infrastructure. Another challenge was how to deal with all the installations like heating, cooling, ventilation, water supply and waste water. I wonder how they plan on dealing with things like that in the Line City.
I really wonder too what the actual architecture plans and designs look like, the fact that they are actually breaking ground on multiple aspects of the 4 locations of the projects is wild. I really wonder how much of this project is engineered and ready? If this succeeds or fails im sure there will be classes like the ones you went to that will be studying the outcome of this project.
@@TwoBitDaVinci Yeah, it's kind of funny that they've started breaking ground but no plans or designs have yet been made public (as far as I can tell). It's also a bit strange that when you look at the "our people" section on the website there is no mention of an architect or engineer. They do have a "invest in Neom" section, maybe that's what it's all about?
I worked on an inner city redevelopment years ago where they were already pouring the concrete for the underground parking whilst we were still designing the upper levels, but this line city is of a completely different magnitude so you'd think they'd have some plans/drawings to work with. It's going to be interesting to see how this project develops.

one problem i have in mind is sand piling up on the sides of the line with the wind also if the top is open the amount of sand getting blown in is going to be enormous the are going to have trucks moving sand out constantly in windy days
The Burj Khalifa needs tons of poop trucks every day to empty it.
I think they can possibly save a lot of energy through scale. If two or more levels of this project will be underground they can move air from below ground to the upper levels to cool them with nothing more than a fan. For example my house is built on a slab and the lower level is about 18 inches below grade. In 100 degree summer weather the lower level never got above 80 and in winter of 20 degrees it hasn't gone below 49 with no heat. If I do turn on heaters it takes awhile for the mass to stop radiating cold into the rooms.
If the city used ground source heat pumps, they could greatly expand the conditioning, but even circulating air from the transport levels would be an advantage.

I love this contribution to the discussion. Seems like a smart way to deal with that warm and hostile environment.
A multiple ringed circle would be more structurally sound and could use a spoke-and-hub design for transportation. Kind of like the Pentagon but round and on a larger scale. Would not need the height requirement and could make them different heights, increasing moving inward, to not block sunlight and maximize solar panel and hydroponic farm exposure. The increasing height moving inward would reduce wind at lower levels and increase it at higher altitude, allowing for efficient wind power on the roofs.
Nothing in nature or geo math uses linear. Circles with angled straight lines is the most efficient, even at the cellular level
Exactly. Don't forget that a round city would allow concentric rings of moving walkways, where each one moved 3mph faster than the last. Walk across 20 rings and you are moving 60mph around a ring, which would be fine as far as centrifugal force goes if the ring is 5 or 10 miles across.
Circular seems to make more sense to me also ....... the only thing i can think of why they went linear is for a modular approach but its just a guess.
@@TwoBitDaVinci Circular is expensive. Consider how expensive it was to build Apple Park. Apple Park cost $5 billion to build, about 5 times as much as it took to build the Pentagon (adjusted for inflation). To build it, they will need several huge factories. It looks like only the factory by BROAD Group seems capable of this scale. See for instance the BROAD Holon Service Condo project ("Building Construction Perplexities January 5, 2023"). BROAD Group offers a far lighter method of building skyscrapers. It would be great shame and irony to build such a large building as the proposed LINE using conventional reinforced concrete which would be 10x heavier than is necessary when contrasted with one built with BROAD's new building method.
@@TwoBitDaVinci Circular overlapping structures can be modular too. In fact in nature circular geometric shapes are the most efficient and predominant. Think about snowflakes they can be modular linear and circular
Who can afford to live there? A 10,000 square mile structure is huge! Unless they can get enough residents to warrant all the shops and businesses, there will be a lot of open space. Who will work at the stores/shops, slaves? Will there be another city forming just outside The Line, to supply cheap labor?
There will be 3 other main city locations that we named in the beginning of the video. But yes how this develops will be very curious.
I bet it won't be that tall or long. The old plans are insane even if you had hundreds of billions of oil money to spend. If they manage to build 100 meters tall, 200 meters wide and complete even the first 10 kilometers, I would be truly amazed.
And nobody would want to live in it anyway.

I'm curious about looking deeper into vertical and indoor farming. In the video, you mentioned the vertical farm growing leafy greens followed by an annual yield of "food". With the nutritional requirements of humans, vertical farms seem very limited. I appreciate that you mentioned this limitation within The Line design.

We do need to do a deeper dive on the future of vertical farming. at the moment it seems to be limited to lower calorie dense foods so this is a concern.

Proteins are going to be produced in ever greater quantities by biological engineering as time goes by. Milk is a classic example. Most 'natural' milk byproducts such as whey are used in the production of proessed foods like bread. These are rapidly being replaced by chemicaly identical products produced by bacterial or fungal fermentation. These products are completely identical and indistinguishable from their 'natural' equivalents, but without the husbandry downsides, much more efficiently and MUCH cheaper. It's happening now.
My initial question is how disruptive will this be to wildlife trying to move or migrate? Also, I don't think a people-moving Hyperloop even exists anymore as a prototype, so there's that too. I suppose there's a non zero chance this will happen, but I wouldn't bet on it.

This is the best video I have seen on the line , really in depth research and reasonable unbiased comment , it probably won’t happen but good luck to them for trying something so ambitious.

I would imagine that there will be alot of solar panels involved, and maybe a off site farm too?

like the original dream Walt had for E.P.C.O.T. this could be a great prototype to test future urban living concepts and rethink city layout, mobility and planning.

The mirror facade is my only issue, it would have been beneficial to line it with a combination of solar panels or some sort of designed tubing which has water as it runs through from the red sea, free water turbines and helps with cooling it.
That surface area wall is a heat nightmare which can be turned into a great source of energy.

That's a bigger question. Could be because MBS wanted to connect the west and east coasts. Could be he just thought it was cool. The rumor I heard was because he wanted his trains not to have to turn so that they'd be able to move faster. Lots of possibilities and I don't know that any solid answer has been made public.

Uhh any of dozens of companies in Europe, China or anywhere else. Barring someone slapping sanctions on Saudi Arabia, no company in the world is going to turn down that potentially massive paycheck if they have tech anywhere close to what's desired and can make the bid.

It touches two bodies of water which combined provide passage to a significant portion of the global trade network. I'm sure they can manage to build a dock for the boats.

Now that's one I haven't seen discussed before. Presumably they'll have water treatment in the structure somewhere, but that still leaves a lot of questions: Who is going to want to live near that facility? How are they going to get the sewage down from all their vertically-designed spaces to the sewer lines? Is the whole place going to be just a giant maze of piping? Or do they have a better plan? Its hard to say from just their concept art given that it includes things like upside-down trees and flying saucers so we can only wait and see what it looks like when the engineers have done their work. (Also, they need to get fresh water back up to the top so doubling up on all that piping. And add pump facilities to the list of necessary infrastructure that nobody's going to want to live within a few hundred meters of.)
@@altrag The best idea would be to incorporate some of the stuff people do when they design "earth ships" - where they use the waste water from the kitchen and showers etc first to flush the toilet and then run that through a filtering system ultimately feeding the flower / growing beds. As mentioned above, it would make sense to use the outside to actually run water through both for cooling the structure and for warming that waster etc. But honestly, I think it's more about MBS drawing his line in the sand and luring in investors with a fancy looking pipe dream. But we'll see over the next years, I guess.
Imagining the amount of labor force required and the conditions these people will be in while this city is being constructed.
Hyperloop and any type of vaccuum train in general never makes any sense unless they made the entire outside of "the line" solar panels. There is simply too large of an engery requirement, so it would make more sense to just use a high speed rail or maglev system to go up and down.
Imagine you are in New York City, surrounded by amazingly cool and tall buildings!.. Now imagine the whole city stretched out to a line, a handfull of very very long streets stacked on top of each other - Then try to argue (with yourself please) how that makes any kind of sense at all?

Has anyone thought about wind tunnel effect? If it is open the whole way inside from one end to the other, I think wind would be a problem. Even with the top open, seems like there should be a wind block every mile or something.
That is a very curious question. We discussed wind resonance like with a bridge. But in regards internal air flow thats a very good question. The ability for massive amounts of chimney effect would also be a curious question.

If you are sitting somewhere between the ends or your destination is there, you can not use the superfast transport. To cover the needs, the transport system must have a couple of stops at every mile. And that will not be so fast from end to end.
Time will tell. I'm skeptical this will work and if people will be happy living there.

I like getting in my car and driving anywhere. I think I would find it very claustrophobic. But would be willing to try for short time if there was work.
Many years ago, I got a job as a Kitchen Porter; (Dishwasher). One morning, I came in and was asked to train-up a new employee, which I dutifully did, but then they kept telling me, there were no shifts available, until I realised, I had trained my replacement. Maybe it's just a Notion, but Ricky seems to be doing the same.
Interesting - my concern would be around the environmental impact of such a project - one of the biggest issues is that of water, and if the only solution is desalination, which is not a terrible idea given its proximity to the coastline, however, my question would be: what do they plan for the residue? If the idea is simply to pump it back into the ocean, that will create a marine desert, simply because the salinity of the residue will be vastly more concentrated than that of the water that was pumped out of the sea in the first instance... that is already happening in other parts of the world such as Singapore as far as I am aware, so I would be interested to know what they plan to do about that. Any your comment about the maintenance of the mirrored exterior is also valid. Even though the construction has begun, this is very much unproven territory that it is moving into and I would be interested to see the imagined outcomes against the actual outcomes. Proof of the pudding would be whether it is duplicated anywhere else in the world.... Thanks for an interesting video 👍😄
I'm surprised highly increased salinity is a problem with the output from desalination plants. I hadn't heard that. You can obviously limit how much the salinity increases. You can also completely retain all the salt in dry form and use it for other purposes so no water returns to the sea. RO filtration produces a lot of waste water, but evaporative desalination shouldn't need to. Worst case, dumping high-saline water out onto the sand would provide evaporative cooling for the area and leave salt slicks the local land wildlife would be thankful for. Land critters will travel miles to find a salt lick.

One thing, where would the more meanial staff live? The cleaners, the handymen, the gardners and such? I'd doubt their salary would cover propert within the scheme. I suspect we'd end up with shanty towns developing along it's length outside the actual city
Thanks for the great videos. When they mention "an autonomous judicial system" they mean that it will have autonomy outside the Saudi legal system, not that judicial system would be automated. This is key because they cannot attract people from more progressive cultures (legally speaking) without it.

@@JanBruunAndersen My problem with the arcology of Todos Santos in that book was that the moving walkways were in straight lines, so moving back from the faster walkways to the slower took planning ahead or you splat at the end of the line. Should have been circular so if you didn't plan ahead you just overshot your planned exit a bit.

I would think a giant circle, half under ground with a solar/greenhouse dome...maybe a hyperloop around the perimeter and a huge park/forest in the center. 😏
Wouldn't need a hyperloop. The great thing about a circle would be that moving walkways could be continuous, and concentric rings of them where each one moved at walking speed fast than the previous one would let someone "walk" at 60mph around the outside of a 10 mile diameter ring in 30 minutes, or between the farthest two points in 15 minutes.
I think the most value to come out of this is the lessons to be learned from it. Challenges should start revealing themselves pretty soon.

@@TwoBitDaVinci I'm not a city builder but I would think the journey will be a long and complicated process. Even if they are successful, once all the construction issues are solved they will have to address putting 9 million people in a very small space. That sounds like kind of a challenge to me. I'm not familiar with the government and social constructs but I don't really see that there will be a lot of smiles among them. You do a very good job covering your topics but this is a pretty concept. Your video would have to be very long (like days) to cover all the issues they're going to face. Another one is the amount of money they will have to spend to make this work. In my opinion thia won't do much to diversify their economy. It's just not a good use of that money. This is also coming at a time when their number one export is something that many people are trying to do away with. That's a pipe dream but it may be a short term problem (whole other video). That being said there may be a problem they are trying to solve we don't know about.
The fire safety for this would have to be insanely good.

I personally came up with this exact concept over 20 years ago. The line is important for eventually all of humanity can participate. A round community can hold so many and you would have to build many exclusive round structures to house humanity. Multiple lines across the longitudinal lines of the globe can eventually extend around the globe to house nearly all of humanity. This would leave all of wild nature for crops and wildlife to exist!
I like this kind of stuff. Alot better than accusing media of not covering a story that is actually covered on evey channel.
Glad you like it..... but Fyi on the train video when we made it we check majority of msm and found the story was mostly missing on websites and social media accounts and live news cycle. By the time our video was uploaded to youtube more of the msm was covering it much more. This is the downside of youtube for our style of video it is about 12hr minimum delay from finished video until posted to youtube.

Regarding food, what about Carbon Capture food? Companies like Solar Foods and Kiverdi are making great progress.
What impact would desalination have on Red Sea ecology
It would primarily have to do with what they choose to do with the brine....if they use it as a resource then it should lessen the impact. We have a Desal video coming out in a few weeks so keep your eye out for it.
I like the idea of how this could translate to Mars. I was thinking this was more like a ring space station ala Halo, Elysium, or Mass Effect.
so many lessons will be learned....the harsh desert will teach many lessons for space.

For the LINE mega city to look special it will not allow development or people outside of the LINE. That is called being imprisoned inside the LINE city.
If they build it and then allow free urban sprawl around it that would defeat the entire premise. Clearly this is a case of form over function. It would make sense for a large city to be built on a major line with appendages off of that line but staying within the line is all about aesthetics and not quality of life for the people who have to live there.

The real problem is when oil revenues actually do begin to fall. Saudi Arabia is betting that oil revenues remain high to fund their future expansion. Right now those expectations are reasonable but there is huge investments in untried technologies that if successful would be a game changer. If those investments actually come to fruition than all of Saudi Arabia's goals would crumble faster than a cookie and and display bets that would never pay off and become a living breathing eyesore of unwelcome proportions.
Understand that less oil means the price goes up.

The main problems of Saudi Arabia is that the daily maximum temperature during the Summer is 50C or 122F. Having a building with only north and south facing walls at 28 degrees latitude would result in almost zero solar irradiation into the building. This would significantly reduce AC costs of the city.

Looking at that design they intend to use mirrors to reflect away sun heat and prevent sand storms and probably earth berm to provide insulation. One of the biggest problems facing the ME countries will be cooling their homes and businesses and that is getting much worse as climate change progresses.
I would prefer to see them use the examples in Israel and Egypt for replanting and greening the deserts and using solar and wind to desalinate water but maybe that is included in their plans.

That is saving lives, powering hospitals, homes, schools and businesses. A system the size used on many US single family homes can power an entire small village in the ME or Africa. I designed a solar composting toilet that is now in use all over in villages in Pakistan and on the Navajo reservation.
We can hardly build skyscrapers imagine constantly building one for 160kms. It's not doable.
I feel like the analysis of the Line should start at how the goals of the Saudi Gvmt guided its design. They strategically want a rail connection to the west side of the peninsula, they need to house people, they need to attract international investment and skilled labor, and they need to protect the rail lines from the desert. I think this was their idea of an inspirational project to fulfill those goals, get a ton of press, and help build legitimacy at the same time.

I thought the same, well solar panels, semi clear not so much. The amount of electricity they would create would more than power the line. They could then create green hydrogen as an export product. Send it to „power plants“ or for other industries around the world.

This appears to be a very expensive and crazy vanity project. (The Emperor's New Clothes springs to mind.) Nobody is going to tell them it's a terrible idea if they can make a fortune in the attempt to build it.

I was curious about this a few weeks ago and went to google maps to look. The golf course is already finished. Nothing else.
I have done city work before. When I first started, I was told not to work to fast or hard. They literally said if you do then you'll be fired for making everyone else look bad. So, city workers and contractors working for the city are ripping everyone that pays taxes off.
Lots of shady private construction is like that as well, which is no surprise. Did a job for a slime ball of a fellow who bid 9 days to redo the wood siding on a doctors office. By the end of day 2 we were halfway done and he lost his mind and told us to slow down. So the next 7 days we maybe worked 2 hours a day, and even then just slowly. 3 hour lunches. Then it took me about 2 months to get paid. Learned a lot on that job, just not about replacing wood siding.

Yep, paying some guys to dig the sand around a bit isn't really the city starting construction. I'm still convinced it'll never amount to anything, but even if it did, it'd rapidly turn into a disaster of some variety. Saudia Arabia is just panicking because they know that aside from oil they have basically nothing to offer the world.
I remember that they also had started construction on the Jeddah Tower, I wonder how that project is going....
The old vision of the line was a fantastic idea. Most of it was underground, with bottom layers being utility and transit, and then B1 and surface level structures being focused on shops, business, and housing. This is not a horrible idea as surface structures would be covered with solar, and lots of shadey parks and green space. This keeps the heat and evaporation at a minimum, and keeps infrastructure protected, and having minimal surface disturbance.
But what they are doing now... yeah... not a chance. This was a money grab of international investors during a bullish market. The reason they are breaking ground is to show a "good faith effort" so they can legally not give the money back. When the project fails, and it will, then local companies and contractors get to nab all of the money, and the government gets to tax them for their cut.

As someone who is working on the project I can assure you that no one knows what the fuck they are doing. The "design" was created by some 3D artists with a brief to create a 1 minute animation to impress a ADHD Prince. It was then handed to the builders who have a brief to "Just fucking do it immediately."

Also, Jacque Fresco was an open book regarding the technical & engineering side of things. All of that societal research never got a red cent of investment, beyond a cool website & some artistically rendered movies. The concept of The Line doesn't hold a flame up to The Venus Project - on paper - the point where these projects tend to die.
i hope it works as dreamed of, but frankly, i would feel trapped between 2 walls of mirrors. No doubt, they'd be a welcome break from the elements to those who live there. But i have a NEED to see nature, to have that sense of freedom, of seeing whats over the next hill

Presumably, each apartment window will look outwards onto that desert scene and there will be ground level doors where you can go outside at any point. Nobody will see a neighbor out their window, just nature ! It looks like the north side of the building will get some nice shade from the desert sun most of the year, too, so I expect many parks with trees extending a few hundred yards out from the building on that side. That would be a huge improvement from any other Saudi city I've ever seen pics of.

I seriously doubt it could work long-term. The logistics of it doesn't make sense. The negatives won't outweigh the positives of it.
I suspect they have no idea how a lot of it will work or come about given humans don't have the level of automation yet. But they could build a mile of it for POC and see how it fairs for a few years and then tweak the design as needed.

Interesting concept, but an arcology in a single long line seems like it would be much less stable than a building built as a ring. A single 100 story tall building in a circle 40 miles across would easily house 9 million people (100 floors means 200 apartments every 20 feet of linear building, so 6 million apartments needs 600k feet or

The line looks like an environmental disaster waiting to happen. How will wildlife manage to migrate around it? Birds and bats might manage to fly over, but what about land mammals? Do antelope, camel, or even lizards need to cross the line's footprint to access food sources at different times of year? If so, those creatures will die from this project.
How will they avoid all the bird collisions against that 100 mile mirror. Anyone who works in a skyscraper sees all the birds that fly into the mirrored and glass walls.
I just read an article yesterday about how vertical farming isn't living up to the promises made to investors, and a lot of operations are failing. I'm sure the economics are a little different in Saudi Arabia, but that is likely because of the level of government subsidy it needs to function, and the willingness to pay for it.
I think the line will either end up a much smaller project, or it outright fails.The whole project is unsustainable and hazardous for nature.
