This brings back memories. My dad was one of the head engineers on this program, was called the "M-Van". He brought home many prototypes of this vehicle. Stick shift, a Camaro engine in one, oh man those things ripped for a van. All done by GM techs at the tech center, so neat. On a side note, these things were awesome with the 4.3 in them, bigger than a minivan but not full size, great family vehicles.
Its not a mini van they was midsized vans. These things is popular in China. These are the last of the good vehicles that gm made.
I daily an awd and they are sweet. most are 30 years old so they need work, but so much fun for a van

Oil pump PWM by use of the indicators may have been one of the greatest engineering feats I've ever seen on the internet.

I daily drive a 95 Safari van with a 96 5.7 vortec swap and GT45 turbo.
Right after high school I started laying tile. I bought an '85 with a 4.3l, 4 barrel quadrajet, and headers from the factory. That thing was the only Chevrolet I've ever owned that wasn't absolute garbage. Thing was actually pretty fast and didn't suck to drive. My buddy who also did tile ended up buying one with a Four cylinder iron duke motor with a 5 speed stick shift. It was a dog but it was passed around our group for a solid 15 years. Great little vans

I've been thinking about a turbo 4.3 AWD Astro for years. So much potential there. I would've mounted the turbos underneath to keep the interior space, though.
We did that year's ago we put a typhoon engine set up 4.3 turbo in our Astro van rear wheel drive only since the van was only rear wheel drive what a blast we had winning races 🏁 It was a sleeper for sure...I could imagine 4.3 turbo Awd Astro van 🧑🔧🧰🛠🔩🪛
My 93 Astro had a re-call that almost killed me & my family..bought it used in 97 & had it for 1week .. we're cruising 65mph on US 281 south Texas & all brakes locked up..on their own..my foot was on throttle..van swirved left then right..almost hitting 2 other cars...dealership took it back..refunded ALL $$..we are glad to be alive.. dealership said it was a computer- anti-lock brake system re-call. Don't know other years affected.
I just watched this episode again on MTOD and this build had great intentions and good backing, but they didn't have the correct tool to remove the cap from the wastegates to change the springs from 2.5 psi to 10 psi springs and they jacked up the second external wastegate, so they removed it and replace it with a piece of a license plate. This is hot rodding at it's finest, and the tuning was on the spot and these dudes were really rushed to complete this build in two days. It's a miracle it was running at all at that pace. They gave it a good run, but unless they were millionaires and extremely experienced in building twin turbo V6s, they were cursed from the get. I still really enjoy watching them try their best!

WHY they went with a rear mounted twin turbo setup, when the better solution would be vortech supercharger kit for the 96-99 s10/blazer
I just refurbished a 2002 cant wait for van life summer
S10 swap + (383 + mild cam) + (700R4 shift kit + corvette servo) = 13 seconds and smooth idle
I would hope it goes faster than 13s with a 383.
As a kid 16 in 2002 i wanted a astro with a 502c.i swap. What a killer looking unit. Amd if yall remember astros has a sweet aftermarket back then.

I'm waiting for my cousin to give up on her 89 Astro conversion van. 27,000 miles. And was garage kept until she got ahold of it. Unfortunately only 2wd. But I have s10 drop spindles and a set of 90s bullet wheels to make it a radwood killer

With Ford doing the super vans, Chevy really missed out with a "monsoon" variant of one of their vans. Especially in the era of cyclone and typhoon
Those vans are pretty sweet too bad most of these things got car cancer and never got treated or they got junked
Still quite a few living on down south in painter/construction trades. Most probably we'll over 200k. My 08 uplander 3.9 has surprisingly been great and has 253,000 miles with stock engine and no oil burning. Tranny is another story but it's a fwd gm so no surprise there...

Ive told so many people these awd vans have such a similar drivetrain. I wanna throw my 2000 Jimmy on a similar platform bein it's 4wd it should be pretty easy off the rip 🙏

Ive seriously been contemplating building up a late 90s Nissan quest. They use the same motor that comes in the xterra and frontier supercharged and another engine option is its distant cousin from the 300zx
I'm currently building a first gen Pathfinder. A quest would be fun if you want to stick with vans, but a stick shift turbo 4.0 aerostar would be amazing and probably far cheaper. I had a stick 3 litter in the 90's and it was a blast to drive

It's funny because i had a Chevy astro van with the 4.3 wouldn't spin in gravel but i cut both cats off put a cool air intake one it and splitfire spark plugs that's it. It would do doughnuts on dry pavement and give any v8 a good run for it's money! A 4.3 is just a 350 with 2 pistons cut off of it and they can actually be built to be faster then something with a stock 350 in it.

When my engine dies (hoping it lasts a lot longer) I'll likely cram a V8 in there....

...Did I miss where they talk about how to fuel that thing properly with its tiny 19 lb/hr injectors mounted within the intake manifold?
It's a bit funny how they mention their "cheap" steel intake plumbing after mounting TWO expensive turbos, each by themselves probably perfect mounted ALONE with that 4.3. (I know... sponsorship!)
Edit: I saw "install intake manifold" written on the side window. Was it a Holley 2114 with injector bosses welded in? There's no aftermarket EFI intake available for the 96+ Vortec heads (the only heads worth using IMO, though the Rotsun's engine did well with those hogged out TBI heads)

I put a 383 stroker in my 95 Astro van.
SUGGESTION: GMC PLEASE CONSIDER RESSUECTIING YOUR MOTORSPORTS PROGRAM AGAIN.
Probably stating the obvious but the exhaust gas is gonna have b-all energy by the time its got to those turbos.

They are slow. But as somebody that mistreat vehicles on the regular they're tough as nails. Thank God they're not strong enough to break the transmission but the frame is pretty stout.
If you want to blow up an engine drive full speed in top gear drop into second and drop clutch much cheaper than twin turbos!
Without a doubt that is the slowest vehicle with 2 turbochargers.

Definitely 427 big block LS trans brake built trans some slicks and bigger turbos u have ur friends drive that on sick week next year

This is like Monster Garage but with talent.
You know, there are kids in poor countries that can only afford one small turbo on their vans. It is this kind of conspicuous consumption that has led to our being called ugly Americans in lots of places. Mostly by people who are rapidly fading in our rear view mirrors as we launch.
