Yep, the Minx shock is real. 😉 Dami and Siyeon were the most traumatized by the failure, with Siyeon being unable to watch music shows without crying before the company re-debuted them as Dreamcatcher. The CEO said in an interview that the failure of Minx wasn't the girls' fault, it was the company's fault. When did a Kpop CEO admit a mistake? He also said that if Dreamcatcher would fail as well, he would become a cucumber farmer to support the girls. InSomnia highly respect CEO-nim for sticking with the girls.
"Chase me" was their debut as Dreamcatcher, released on January 13th (a Friday), 2017. It must have been nerve-wrecking for the members, re-debuting with a genre that is not popular in Korea after Minx failed. But they already doubled their sales with this. And they stuck with the Rock/Metal vibe until today, now selling 50 times the albums than Minx did.
This is the start of the Nightmare arc, which spans 6 MVs and 1 Japanese release. They are Nightmares here, and the Nightmare hunter is trying to dispel them - how that turns out is shown in the next one, Good Night.

the fact that the CEO owned up to the mistake is HUGE!!! .... I'm now scared about Good Night... 🤣
This was controversial for the longest time. Siyeon wanted to quit. Dami hated it. Dreamcatcher fans had a mutual understanding of "Don't talk about it". But actually pretty recently, Dreamcatcher started to acknowledge Minx and now we view it as a weird memory. Dreamcatcher CEO never gave up on the girls and now we have Dreamcatcher. You will notice how Dreamcatcher fans are some of the best in the community, because we've been so close to failure and worked our way back to the top.
Also JiU is an incredible leader that helped the team never lose hope.
A very humble leader who shoulders too much responsibility. She still feels like she personally failed because Minx failed. Obviously we know better from an outside perspective. But she still feels it, almost a decade later. That makes her probably the most empathetic group leader; she knows what to avoid and so she has a better feel for navigating the pitfalls of the industry. But look at her sunny, positive personality...just WOW, I wish I had been born with even half of that kind of drive! She's awesome! :)

Even though WDYCTMH is my favorite song from Minx, i don't know if i should talk about it or not, Minx era is like Speak no Evil and See No Evil for Siyeon and Dami (she was the maknae at that time and Minx is kinda sexualizing with the clothing choice, - it was around the Peak era of K-pop Big Dique Energy so the trend follows) but since they performed Love Shake ot7 During Broken Halloween Concert ( dang, i forget the concert name when they change it because of the Halloween Incident) in Seoul, i guess it's true that time can heal the wounds...
I keep hearing it was a we don't talk about the dark times kinda situation 🤣 I added the ot7 version to my list!
In fact, Minx was a big failure in the members' lives. Since the beginning of Dreamcatcher they worked so hard for this second chance to work. And whenever they talked about Minx they felt sad and didn't like it. Recently with the support of fans and Dreamcatcher's growth they have overcome this and even performed at concerts singing Minx songs with Gahyeon and Handong together. Most important of all, their company never gave up on the girls, and instead of doing like the others and letting go, they made a redebut. And later Happyface changed its name to Dreamcatcher Company.
I"m so glad the company and CEO didn't give up and admitted that they made a mistake with Minx!

when I became Insomnia about 3/4 years ago, I had never watched Minx's mvs, I always knew about their past but because they themselves said they didn't like it, I had never seen it. I only saw them last year and the impact was huge haha but I'm so grateful that they had the opportunity to become Dreamcatcher and be this revolutionary group.

The "dodging disbandment" video really has the details of why Minx failed, I still suggest you watch it. Love Shake actually had a mini album, and I really like at least one of the b-sides. Also just in the last year, they performed Love Shake as OT7 at a few concerts in full, and in partial in others, including Weekly Idol. Handong and Gahyeon actually knew the choreo, and in some variety shows, during random play dances, Minx would come on, and they would dance, while all the other members were just looking around, not acknowledging the songs. :D They finally got their wish when they did the OT7 performances. There are videos of all of that.

Why Did You Come To My House would’ve been a 100% popular if it came out back on 2012 where that kind of EDM music was popular with groups like Big Bang. Love Shake is more of a meme now and Deukae is now more comfortable talking and joking about Minx. They call them their seniors and have even covered Love Shake at their concerts with Handong and Gahyeon. Minx just came out at the wrong time, and even though it was a bad period for the girls, they were able to become stronger and face all the new challenges Dreamcatcher brought. A girl group with a dark horror concept is still something hard to grip in the Kpop industry, but the rest of the world loved it. They did a world tour on their second year of debut!
Also, about the order for ur deep dives, since Dreamcatcher works with storylines, you can separate the videos by three eras. Nightmare (Chase Me is pt1, then comes Goodnight, Fly High, You and I, What, Piri and Breaking Out). Then comes Dystopia (Scream, BOCA, Odd Eye) and finally Apocalypse era (MAISON, VISION and ??? coming out on May 24). Then you can listen to the full albums/EPs/mini albums in between eras. The first Nightmare single albums are short so u can mesh a lot of them together. Going chronologically is def the way!

I like the songs. They did reasonably okay with them, but the competition with other groups was fierce. Love Shake is a mini album with other songs. They also sang the song Action live, but there is no studio version. You can see from the off they had talent. They also had a Christmas cover with label group Dal Shabet.
I might have to check out that mini album.... 🤣

As you progress through the title tracks listen to the change in their vocals especially Siyeon's in "chase me" you can still hear a bit of the cutesy part of Minx but she really gets comfortable with the rock and herself after a few songs

So glad they changed their concept and became *Dreamcatcher* as we know them today.
*FYI:* There was a year or longer period the end of 2019 into 2020 that *HanDong* left back to China. She felt she didn't have much of a roll in the group. HanDong entered a survival show in China called "Youth With You" season 2. One of the mentors/ judges on that show was *LISA* Blackpink.
I am not sure that was her reason for going to China. First, the obvious, visiting her family. Second, working on her confidence (and OH, BOY did THAT part work out wonderfully!). It does not seem that she had LEFT the group entirely. These ladies are just too close. She missed them and they all missed her like crazy. She even made Reaction Videos to what the other six were doing while she could not be with them and those reactions are on DC's channel. So she was still part of the group, just separated by circumstances.
I was sad about the way that Han Dong and Lisa had such limited contact. What happened between YG and Happyface had nothing to do with these two ladies but it seems like that incident really affected things between them on Youth With You; maybe it was contractual, who knows? They only shared a stage once before and Lisa remembered Dongie, vaguely (no surprise because Dongie was not much of a talker when they had been on the same stage at the same time).
I'm soooo glad they become Dreamcatcher! Or we wouldn't have this awesome music to listen too!

It's good to see their interactions with Handong and Gahyeon and how close they became even after only knowing each other a short while. JiU's warm heart really shines ❤ JiU said (in an interview with CéciKorea) that she wasn't worried about the drastic concept change from Minx to Dreamcatcher. "Although it was a shot in the dark, I somehow knew that Dreamcatcher would succeed. Our staff worked hard to come up with good ideas for our group so I believed that all their effort would pay off."
JiU was 100% correct and all their hard work has paid off!!! 🥰

I am glad they switch too, cuz while minx song is great, it is not something that would intrigued me personally to find out more abt the group. So thankful dcc change up their concepts and kept all the girls cuz they have been serving since their first debut. Minx disbandment hit hard on the girls, giving up totally what they have built in minx to a full 180 degree to dreamcatcher, a gg dealing with rock was literally unheard of in 2017. Now, all i can say is that i am so proud of them, they deserve so much.

So my guess is the company were trying to recreate the success they'd had with Dal Shabet (who debuted in 2011). Dal shabet were the company's first group and fairly popular in Korea to begin with. They debuted with a similar concept to Minx; bright, bubbly and cute. But changed the concept to be more mature/sexy around 2014/15.
This is when Minx debuted. My guess is that they wanted the older group to carry the more mature girl group concepts that were popular in that era (AOA, Girl's Day, Nine Muses) while they debuted a cutesy group to try and recapture the glory days.
It didn't work out for either group. Dal Shabet slowly lost popularity (The first group I ever stanned all the way from debut to disbandment) and Minx never even got a foot in the door.
But instead of giving up on them like 99% of companies would, they took a huge effing risk and we got Dreamcatcher out of it and I'm so SO glad they did because Dreamcatcher are precious, unique and special and I'm so proud of their success!

Love Shake actually had a mini album with it with a few fun B-Sides as well, it wasn’t just those two songs. Would recommend them in your free time, though I always love more reactions too :P

Thanks for the video. A lot of InSomnias have this mentality that we shouldn't mention or speak about MINX era because it protects the girls. So much that they hound and bug reactors when they do. Hopefully you haven't gotten any hate about it. For me it's okay to talk about it, especially since it's such a huge part of Dreamcatcher and what makes them them. It has traumatized at least 5 of the 7 members, but they are stronger now for it. I'm sure others have mentioned it, but that's what makes JiU such a great leader. She was the glue that held them together. And that's why I think InSomnias should talk about it. Just to see how far they've come and the struggles they have had to go through. As long as we don't go out of our way to bug DC about it of course. Ever since their first win with "MAISON", there's definitely less tension about it. So much that there's an OT7 performance of "Love Shake". If they'd also do one for "Why Did You Come To My Home", that would be the icing on the cake. I really enjoy the song haha.
"Chase Me" was such a super intense debut if you think about it. Glad the company decided to keep them to make Dreamcatcher. I mean you can see with their MINX mv's, the girls were really talented and could pull off that concept. But I'm like you, I do prefer their rock concept. But I also like their cute/pop concept too!
Everyone has been super welcoming and sweet 🥰 I really wanted this deep dive project to be a journey of theirs as well as mine, starting at their beginning and working my way through to where they are now. 🥰

Thank you for this video! I am excited that you are about to dive deep into DC! They are such an amzing group and discovering them was so much fun. As you have noticed and mentioned they have alot of content.
I would recommend you start w the tittle tracks as you have here but also do the dance practices for them. Once u are done with the TT maybe move onto the special clips or solos. I also highly suggest you do some of their covers.. They are amazing when it comes to covers!!! (maybe as a bonus add a cover??). Relay dances and some interviews or games will give you more insignt into thier personalities if u wanna check those out too.
One of the fav things in their journey is seeing them grow up and figure out who they are not just as DC but also as solo artist. Siyeon has one of the biggest growths in my oppion with her stage presence and charisma, as well as her vocal tone that has become stronger and fuller more rockish each era. What and Piri, more so Piri with the blonde hair I think was when Siyeon really became Siyeon we know today.
The MVs follow a storyline, JiU and Yoohyeon are kind of the 2 main charecters for most of them, JiU because she is the leader and Yooh im not sure why but I am not complaining, my JiYoo heart loves it lol.

if anyone here has followed them from 2014/2015 you must know their struggle to voice their name in the minx era, until finally they disbanded right on
"November 29 2016" and finally on "January 13 2017" they debuted again with the name DREAMCTHER and on "April 20 2022" DREAMCTHER finally won its first win on a music show after 5 years of debut,,, through the song MAISON title track from the album "APOCALYPSE:save us"
So glad they finally won, but tbh they should have won waaaay before that! they are just too good! sad that rock/metal isn't really the music show vibe back then...
@@roguereacts Yes, that's because their country didn't look at them from the Minx era to the current Dreamctaher, because their country has rock and metal music, which can rarely be accepted and seen unless they debut at a well-known agency or a top 3.
Love that you watch the behind too, but the whole Minx channel as well as a lot until Boca and Odd Eye era is NOT subbed. In the early days TH-cam allowed everyone to add subtitles which a lot of people did (for example 7dreamers who still do that for their other social media). That's why some of the MV have the names of the members, bc smart Somnies thought of it. TH-cam removed the feature a few years ago and DCC didn't start subbing right away (which is actually crazy if you think about it, until 2020 or so there were no official subtitles...). The content also got A LOT longer. If you stick with the old videos, some of them got reuploaded by fans with subs but not all of them.

@Rogue Reacts you won't regret it, the videos get better and better and way more unhinged! They also started vlogging a few years in and now we went from 5 minutes to multi-part feature length vlogs that most members even edit themselves! Truly a glow-up haha
I don't really know why many ppl don't like them as minx, there's nothing wrong with cute concepts. In fact I think they re-debuted as Dreamcatcher bc back then, the K-pop scene was saturated with cute concepts that adding one more would have been difficult for them to stand out, so they go for something different. Never be ashamed by your beginning/origin, be proud of it bc it shows you how far you got now as a new group.

Dreancatcher are hands-down my ult group, but I also loved Minx. 3rd gen was a magical time in kpop. Hopefully, 4th gen girl crush will get too cool for itself and return to cute, colorful monke.

Minx wasn't bad by any means, they were pretty much par for the course in the mid 2010's, but that is also why they couldn't stand out. Imagine trying to be noticed in a time when groups like Red Velvet, Twice and (my other love 😍) Gfriend were on the rise. In a way I'm very happy Minx failed, it was painful but it had to happen for them to become what they are today. If Minx had somehow managed to cling on for a bit more the girls still wouldn't be around now and they certainly wouldn't have those smiles on their faces.

It's been almost 9 years since Minx debuted, and JiU looks like she hasn't aged a day. So much respect for her because the Minx concept is clearly her natural self; and she had to adapt the most to Dreamcatcher's new concept.

I think I saw Minx's MVs before they were re-debuted as Dreamcatcher, and I watched those MVs with my eyes half-closed. Being a man, the MV was ''interesting' to me but also makes me uncomfortable somehow, though oddly I can watch MV with similar vibes from other groups just fine. Then I saw Chase Me and immediately interested in the group, before finally realising a few years later that the members are actually from Minx. The shock was real!
I get it! A part of me was like what are they doing but also Love Shake is a bop!

I'm really tired of the 'trauma' thing so all I'm going to say is that they performed Love Shake at their Halloween Concert last year. They had fun, the audience loved it, Gahyeon and Handong were happy because they'd always wanted to do it, so trauma over and forgotten as it should be.

Not lying, the love shake mini album is quite good. "Shut Up" is awesome! The harmonizing they did on the ballad...I wish they'd bring that element more prominently back into their DC ballads.

I don't completely dislike Minx's songs but i think the mvs are kind of bizarre at parts

Minx was the typical 2014-2015 girl group sound. Was it good, yes, but at the same time it did not stand out. And having their debut song as a single did not really help. At the time of minx- Jiu and SuA were 20, Siyeon was 18 but basically just shy of 19, 2yoo were 17 and finishing high school. Minx, early DC were rapper SuA, though we have been getting a little bit of rapper SuA with the new stuff. They have performed an ot7 Love Shake- weekly idol had a snippet, apocalypse in Seoul had the full stage and Siyeon can still hit those whistle notes. Jiu, the woman sounds and looks basically the same.. Dami and Siyeon are the Minx members that have changed the most. Love Shake was a mini album, shut up and I just like you are the songs from that minx album i listen to the most.. there is also a club mix of love Shake.
Very few girl groups in 2014 went outside the expected sound- one that did was my other girl group Stan: Mamamoo. Other groups went cute, Mamamoo went jazz and vintage 50s.
I can see how they could totally get lost in the mix during that time. I have added the OT7 Love Shake version to the deep dive, can't wait to check it out!!
The shock value of seeing Minx vs Dreamcatcher ALWAYS makes me giggle hysterically. I love that SuA still raps here and there, because she's REALLY frickin' swaggy and just amazing at everything she does. Siyeon and her wild belts and whistle notes have always been a thing, like I find it too funny people try to say Siyeon has bad vocals. Like INSERT BITCH WHERE MEME HERE. She has stylized vocals because she was in a rock/metal band prior to debuting in Minx (I believe), but yeaaaaaaaaah so happy that Dreamcatcher was the result of Minx pseudo-failure. (Love Shake is a bop tho. Ain't gonna lie. Lol. There's an OT7 version of Love Shake that they did at one of the stops on their US tour with Gahyeon and Dongie, and they also did it on Weekly Idol.)

Dreamcatcher are extremely prolific. I'm not sure there's another group that puts out as much content as they do, at least not one I've come across. I've been pretty deep into the rabbit hole for about a year and I'm still nowhere near being through all their behind-the-scenes stuff.
I legitimately really like WDYCTMH. I honestly feel like if they'd released a second song similar in sound to it and hadn't waiting 10 months between releases, they would have done much better. Love Shake is less my taste of music but it's funny to see people's reactions to is when they're used to Dreamcatcher. You're right though that it's a testament to the fact that they can do any sound really, which you'll get to experience as you go through the albums. I'm still holding out for a Dreamcatcher mini album covering of all of Minx sunbaenim's songs done with DCs rock flair.

There were more songs, they had an album that both appeared on (I think it was like five songs, which is not un-heard-of for a first album from K-Pop). I don't have the album or the track list but this would be easily searchable because of the finite number of songs with Minx' name attached.

@@roguereacts I think it might still be somewhere on the internet but if it is not on the old happyface YT channel, I really don't know what to tell you. Likely in their Playlists. They actually took the album off the shelves, you will never find a new one and I bet it would be worth a pretty penny now that DC has hit it big.

LOL... MINX didn't disband! They rebranded for a couple reasons. A. Happyface were idiots to try to create DalShabet 2.0 when version 1 wasn't a huge success. B. 3rd Gen had taken a decidedly darker tone from 2nd Gen and MINX sits in that 2.5 area were no one knew what the hell they were doing. That being said MINX does show up in Dreamcatcher content(I'm looking at you Millenasia project!). I've always believed that MINX is who the women are off stage and Dreamcatcher is their stage persona. Let's also not forget the two biggest fangirls of MINX are Handong and Gahyeon!

5 members of Dreamcatcher originally debut under Minx, (3rd gen) then re-debut as Dreamcatcher with two additional members about 3 years later! Dreamcatcher's journey and story is absolutely amazing, and those women went through so much to get to where they are now!

I like the song Love Shake I just don't like the video. Some of them were teenagers and they were made to wear tiny shorts and shake their butts while a camera zoomed in on them. Dami was literally underage. The song is an absolute bop though, I often listen to it on the way to work to wake me up.

@@roguereacts Oh, wow! I don't know how that happened, I have not seen a version of the MV that was not lyric-capable since about six weeks after the song was released. You must have found a really rare version to react to! Try changing the language settings in your YT account, there should be multiple settings so if American English does not work, then UK should.
One of their recent songs only had Jamaican English as a setting, which I thought was weird but it works anyway.
Or, a worse problem, your computer is bugged... I hope it's simply a case of the former and not the latter...

Minx era makes me uncomfortable, it's a bit awkward, they are so young and both clips have very sexualized zoom, very tendentious so I understand why they didn't like that period especially as it has nothing to do with their musical fibre
