Gunkanjima(Battleship) island is an abandoned island that thrived with its coal mine operation until it was closed in 1974. Withstanding the harsh conditions of the island, the remains of buildings leaving traces of the residents’ everyday life are impressive. However, the buildings are extremely vulnerable from years of exposure to typhoons and could collapse any time, which makes the visit truly a once in a lifetime experience.
