This is awsome as always! Suggestion: Why don't you let Rob set up 15 amps the way he likes them. Let them cool for say 2 weeks before you shoot a video, and then pick 6-7 of these amps with his settings and let him blindtest. That would really put his knowledge on test. :)
Nah, all that clowns stuff is pretty annoying after a while. Sure, it is ‘branding’ but it is tiring rather soon and is more than enough within one video let alone a series of them. The gimmick doesn’t age well.
@@KentBuchla Well you can't say any of that definitively as it clearly comes down to personal preference so as far as that goes I'm gonna have to disagree and it seems I wouldn't be the only one.
I know this is older but I've been using this video as tool to help me buy one of these soon so here's this for anyone that may need it as well... Orange - 2:29 Peavey - 6:00 Blackstar - 9:20 Hotone - 12:39 Boss - 15:20 Egnater - 19:59 Marshall - 23:34 Victory - 26:57 Victory (Rob's correction) - 35:07
Didn't see this earlier, very useful as I'm thinking of either the Orange or the Victory. Maybe the Victory as I already have on old Tiny Terror for Orange tones.
When I read or hear an amp review that states "way more gain than I'll ever need" that usually translates into "just the right amount" for me. Peavey 6505 for the win.
What about a playoff Last Man(Gear) Standig type of Video? Two pieces of gear against each other one loses the other comes to the next round until only one is left.
Wouldn't really give a good idea of ratings, for example with this one everything would have lost to the orange so you wouldn't know how the others compare, just that orange > everything else. You'd have to do a bracket type where the winners only compete after a play-off round, and it would make the videos take way more than twice as long
Yeah..... But for heavy thrasher riffs, the sound was awesome. At the same time, I've no experience with mixing so it might be bad in mix. But it sounds very ballsy lol
6505mh: By far the best amp here. You can hear how tight it is compared to the other amps, which means you can always dial in a fuller tone to mimic that Orange-y sound if you wanted it (for whatever reason). You'd never be able to do the opposite: make any of these other amps sound as tight as the 6505 mini. For the record, I played along blind and thought the Orange sounded decent (still too much low end for my taste) and the Katana was okaaaaay for shredding. Thought everything else sounded like flaming hot garbage- completely worthless.
it was on lead mode wich no one likes, but the crunch channel its far better, i own one the only thing i dont like its too small and not powerful enough
This is so entertaining and Rob's blinfold playing is awesome. His ear is so good. Great video as usual! I felt the same about the Egnator. Had a tweeker and it just didn't have the bite. Was fun to tweek though.
Why one would like any given amp is already subjective. I think it would be a fun one-off if they had Rabea - with his mixing wizardry - come in and squeeze as much blood out of those stones as possible. Just disclose it.
For sure but it is the internet and it's serious business. People actually watch these videos as if they can tell one amp is better than the other and other people get really upset when their preference doesn't win. I think the way they do these vids is kind of right but they might be better if they did less amps and did far more experimentation. I think a vid with less amps and two guys blindfolded taking turns while two other guys tweaked. Have two of Joss, Lee and Pete playing while Rob and/or Rabea tweak experimenting at first and then get direction based on what the guys are hearing. One of the issue I've noticed with the current setup is Lee is not good at tweaking and Rob is too familiar with gear and he is led by his bias based on his familiarity more than present experience. I don't really care but as I see these vids as nothing more than great entertainment.
Okay, what needs to happen next is for Rob to explain what characteristics he is listening for to determine valve or not. No doubt his hearing and knowledge of sound production are on another level, which only develops after a lifetime of playing, listening to and developing gear. Amazing as usual Mr. Chapman.
There is a characteristic dynamic bark that you get with tubes that solid state doesn't replicate well. It's far easier to tell in person- in a video, very difficult to tell usually (unless compared with a very high end tube amp that's perfectly dialed-in). I have gear throughout low to high price bands, so that's just my two cents. After playing on this gear for a while, I have a tendency now to strongly-prefer tube-driven gain and effects when I'm in front of the amp. These techniques tend to show it the most: Palm-muting (I have a very heavy right-hand and palm-mute very quickly, so I am always chasing a tight amp sound) & alternating between high and low string power chords (full chords as well)
But he always gets the Marshall DSL wrong, in both this video and in the gain version of the valve vs solid state vs modeling challenge video. Rob never thinks the Marshall DSL is valve! What gives with that?? It's one of the best tube amps on the planet, especially the 2018 reissue series.
As good as the DSL is, it's a bit more "clandestine-sounding" than tighter amps, like the 5150 tribute here. That clandestine quality can be heard in lower-end heads (like the Hotone's), so if you're really scrutinizing the amp for that sound, you'll screen out everything with that sound and gravitate towards the tighter amps. I recommend watching Lasse Lammert's playlist to listen for this sound, especially the Hotone Head (very clandestine/distant sounding) vs. the ENGL Ritchie Blackmore (E650) or Krank Krankenstein+ which are very forward/clear and tight-sounding amps by comparison: th-cam.com/video/FI4y79muYE8/w-d-xo.html
GoddessIn Triptych I don't know what you're hearing, the DSL is very present to my ears. It's a bit fizzier than a 5150/6505 but it doesn't sound far away at all. That's what the valves are supposed to do? Mine does a great job with metal and cleans; although a 5150/6505 would be a bit tighter, it wouldn't be like daylight and dark.
Isn't there some sort of mid-contour on the DSL as well? I played one in a store a while back and that had one and really liked the controls (I still want to own one some day). One of my favorite Death Metal albums was recorded with it
First video I saw of Chappers was 11 years ago with 'Orange Tiny Terror Metal'; this video feels like a full circle with Rob picking the Orange as his favourite :)
You guys are fantastic folks, really ! These blinfolded videos show how much Chappers is into music, how much he can hear and feel, which I find amazing. and I had a good laugh too, so keep 'em coming !
+aleh Wrong. Blue channel. Red channel with Gain at 830-900. You can make it sound like any of these other amps with the right pedal in front of it. But none of those ever amps could ever sound as tight as the 6505- it's physically impossible.
I thought the Katana did sound good for soloing, but I just love the tight sound of the peavey. I don't own the mini version (just the 5150 iii), and had no idea the mini had on-board reverb: really tempted to pick one up now.
It only has too much gain on one channel, and that channel is great for metal. I've had a Rocker Terror, OR15 and 6505mh. I've sold the other two and only kept the 6505 because of its versatility. The foot switchable clean/rythm/lead channels make it easily the most useable. The Rocker terror was a close second.
I was super surprised at the Orange - for me it sounded the best (and I usually like Marshall tones). Lovely clean crisp sound that you just want to fiddle with. Good work Orange!
So glad they brought back the rocker circuit. I was begging orange for years after they discontinued the rocker 30 to bring it back. It's quintessential orange crunch, it's cleans up well, two channel with an FX loop (the older one didn't have the loop). Done deal.
If I lived in the uk I wouldn’t buy from anyone but andertons, these kinds of videos show such a level of class, it shows how they dont advertise amps based on profits for them but actually goes to show people how they sound and what would work best for them
I wish now that I was blindfolded.... or simply looked away, to judge these for myself. I've always liked Orange amps, so I may have some bias there, but it does seem to have been at the top of most lists anyway. I'd say the Peavey, Victory and Katana join the Orange at the top, but since Rob had those at the top as well, I'm questioning myself. Great video!
After the first blindfold pedal challenge, I started listening to all of these challenges blind. It works. I picked out the Peavey MH which sounded tight to me (a big plus), much tighter than the other amps. I happen to own the big version and generally like similar-sounding amps like the Framus Cobra.
Great stuff anderton's! You guys are always funny and informative. Something that I like to do myself to remove my own bias is to listen to these videos with my headphones on without watching. I choose without knowing the tones that I like by remembering some of the wrist played or the time frame where it was played. It removes my own bias because let's face it we all have that. Keep rocking guys
You should do a 'Blindfold Viewer' challenge where you guys know what the amps are but they are then blacked out in the edit. We can score them as we go then you guys reveal at the end.
GoddessIn Triptych Good point, but not for the casual viewer. Much as I love this channel I'm not watching the videos twice. Plus I think Chapper's smugness and The Captain's sarcastic non-hints when they know and we don't would be highly entertaining.
The Boss is my favorite, which is why I bought one. The Orange was my second favorite in this lineup, with the Peavey coming in 3rd. I love these blind challenges.
I don't think they set the eq on the DSL correctly. Mine can put out a huge metal sound, but Rob's correct in saying that the DSL needs to be driven more. And they likely didn't have the tone shift on which scoops the mid a bit.
Yeah I love my Tweaker 15, but I use it completely differently to how Rob would. It's just not a Rob type amp :P It does other things excellently though
I really liked it too. But you could hear there was so much potential not being used. It made ME want to play with the controls too. Might be a nice studio amp, if it's got the sort of sound gems in there that it made me think it has.
I always find it interesting when Chappers does these blindfold challenges. Also very telling what he really thinks of gear when he's not trying to "sell" stuff. Like, I've seen the vids about the Marshall DSL amps specifically, and his opinion here is very different when he doesn't actually know it's a Marshall.
I like how this channel "Andertons", they don't have to pause after playing before speaking like in that pedal show it's much more advanced but I like that pedal show how they write on the screen the amp they're using at that time or the pedal.
Phenomenal ear, Rob! Love these blindfold tests! Missed hearing clean settings. So much is revealed about an amp on a clean setting. Much harder to find a great clean sound!
I agree with the previous comments - the Orange is first by a long way but then my back up to my Laney LV300T is a Micro Terror played through a Blackstar 4 x 8" - not quite the bass response of a 4 x 12" but better than a 1 x 12"!! Still a fantastic amp and dead easy to dial in
The Artist MK2 is an amazing amp! So many great amps available today it's almost like you really can't go wrong. My Chapman guitar is one of the finest guitars I own. I plan on adding a Chapman baritone to my collection!
this was a great video.. rob said I'm sorry that's because I didn't like them.... pure gold! these blindfolded vids are probably some of my favs you guys do.
Orange > Victory (after being fiddled) > Katana > Peavey > Blackstar > Egnater (needed tweaking - my Rebel 30 is awesome) > Marshall > Hotone. Damn, guess I need to buy a Rocker 15!
Jonathan Cooper the orange amps really are nice. Personally I love Blackstar.... This ISF control gives it a plethora of options to shape your tone...to go from a Acdc marshall crunch to a heavy tight Mesa Metallica lean tone.
S G I had a HT-5RH and never really got on with it. I had a Series One 45 too which was great, but could never push it hard enough to get the most from it!
This just makes me appreciate my Katana so much more. It definitely is a fair competitor to these amps when properly utilized. Its really close to being the better of them. 1: 6505 *2: Katana *3: Orange 4: Rob's Red Dwarf Settings 5: Marshall 6: Blackstar 7: Egnater 8: Hotone
The Orange sounded best to me, Good crunch without losing the tone. Rob tends to like too much gain though! I'd like to see you do this with clean sounding amps & the Danish god playing.
I have watched you guys for years and your videos only get more entertaining. When I am the market i will most definitely buying a chapman from andertons.
Zac Carter Chapman have gone down the drain. As soon as they released their new standard range, they kept the old models, priced them higher and made worse guitars for the same price
It would be awesome if you guys just had a video talking about the state of the industry (Fender, Gibson PRS) and their prices and such. And also play them all. For sure.
The Orange amp...talk about having the "cocked wah" sound... LOVED the sound of the unboosted Peavey lunch box. Rob did MUCH better this go 'round. Must have been feeling more relaxed. Who knows? But he pretty much nailed five out of the eight . Somewhat restored my faith in his golden ear! Odd that he did not identify his own signature amp.
You really not talked long enough about HOW good Rob was.You need to party him! I'm THAT impressed. For me it''s unbelievable how he nailed one amp after another. Unbelievable. MAXIMUM RESPECT!
I think that's a strong point of the Blackstar, you can get a good sound out of them with all the knobs straight up. I tend to record the dirty channels on mine with the EQ set to 1o'clock and prod the EQ for the room. You can't really change the voice of the amp much though. The one tone knob on the clean is fairly crude but gives a good straight-up clean at 12 o'clock and does bright funky strat sound at 3 o'clock. It's got to be the fastest amp to get set right I own and I keep recording an idea using the Blackstar meaning to replace it with something else once I have an idea what I'm playing and how it needs to sit in the mix but end up keeping the Blackstar.
My preferences were the Orange Rocker, Blackstar 50, and Katana. They all had a clear punchy tone. I own a Katana 100 combo and Blackstar HT20 head so I'm biased towards those tones. I always recommend the Katana to anyone looking for a good home amp. Tube amps would be as good or better for louder/live use. JMO.
Chappers @ 12:45 on the Egnater Tweaker review video “I really really like this amp.” Don’t feel bad about giving it the low score. You loved it when it was dialed in right.
The egnator can/should be dialed in! I wanted so bad to turn the knobs. (Nobs lol) The low mid high can be is tricky. But when you hit your spot...Nice!!😁
Just started listening to the first amp, and the orange sounds amazing!!!!!! (Turns out they all sound good. Long day at work, just came home. And have it on really loud. Just what I needed)
He didn't like the sound of his own amp as much as Orange or Peavey. Just goes to show that amp settings can make or break an amps tone. I know for a fact that the Tweaker is a great sounding amp. It has so many options on it that one or more of them probably affected it's score in a negative way. Doesn't surprise me in the least that Orange was number 1. If they just got a clean tone that I enjoyed they would be my amp of choice for sure. Thanks
@@uriteimwrong7317 no one set it up, they say like 5 times in both videos that everything is set at 12 on all amps I have a Tweaker 88 that I use as my beater amp for practice, I love the thing, but I've never liked the sound out of one that I haven't gotten to mess with
Rob's auditory acumen is uncanny. His ability to play while blindfolded is quite good. To my ears 1) Orange - natural and precise, just sounded good period even at the all 12 o clock setting. Very impressive. Liked it immediately. 2) Peavey -- beastly but a bit grainy and muddy. Really like the Peavey in the first video. Thought it was the best amp of the over 1000 pounds challenge. 3) Katana - sounded good after tweaking by Rob, sounded harsh before that. 4) Victory - sounded not tight enough before but sounded nice after Rob tweaked it. Obvious to me that tweaking makes it better because everything at 12 would.not do these amps justice. Have Rob dial it in to his liking first and keep those settings. Do the video maybe a week or two later, let him play them blindfolded at those very same settings. Also, keep the reverb the same ( ex use the Rv6 on all of them ) to even out the playing field. Great video. I am sure these amps sound better live in the room as well.
Anyone else surprisingly like a lot of these amps more than the high end amps? In particular the Orange, Peavey, and Blackstar models. Id pick those over almost all the amps played in the other video, besides maybe the Friedman!
God I love this channel! I love the blindfold challanges!! do more please! maybe cheap vs expensive distortion pedals! tube vs non tube distortion or preamp pedals!
+1 I have the big version of the 5150, and assuming the mini basically the same control-wise, I never go much past 9 or 10 o'clock for rhythm playing. That mini is amazing
The best I’ve heard Rob play, probably because he said he recorded yesterday and was practicing like crazy. Great video, will you guys now do a third video, amongst those >< 1k, blindfolded of course?
This is awsome as always! Suggestion: Why don't you let Rob set up 15 amps the way he likes them. Let them cool for say 2 weeks before you shoot a video, and then pick 6-7 of these amps with his settings and let him blindtest. That would really put his knowledge on test. :)
Henric Oscarsson that is a cracking idea
I like it :)
Yep, sounds like a good idea to me.
YES!! wanna see this!!
Yes, let Chapters or Captain set their best clean, crunch and lead tones on each amp and then AB them versus another amp.
The fact that Rob called the Blackstar fluffy when Ryan “Fluff” Bruce notoriously hates Blackstar amps is absolutely hilarious to me.
Editing on point again

I agree - metal doesn't register as "music" in my brain, although satan (excuse me: Satan) digs it.......!
“That isn’t music, it’s just a buncha noise!“
..said old folks in the 40’s talking about blues
I was frankly blown away at how tight and angry that 6505 sounded. It wanted you to have all of the gain
Somebody please tell Fluff, that the Blackstar is fluffy
Gengy28 too fluffy for his English taste so.... to American?

First words about a black star..., "it's fluffy" couldn't be anymore ironic

Egnater - 19:59

Didn't see this earlier, very useful as I'm thinking of either the Orange or the Victory. Maybe the Victory as I already have on old Tiny Terror for Orange tones.
I am always amazed at Robs skills on these blind fold challenges. Great job guys!
Oh God he said "Fluff-y" when he turned the Blackstar on xD Am I the only one who can't handle this?
The editing just makes the videos so much fun!
Rob Chapman, the man with the ears of a rock n roll night owl.
Impressive tone ears from Chappers again!
Rory, Mr. Editor, plz bring back fiddlesticks as a stand-in for when some one curses, I've been missing it :(
I just love the whiteboard and actually keeping track of what Rob's comments are about each of the amps.

You should do a 'Blindfold Viewer' challenge where you guys know what the amps are but they are then blacked out in the edit. We can score them as we go then you guys reveal at the end.
You can already do this with these videos. You'd have Rob's commentary, but I always have the screen minimized the first time I watch these.
The DSL had the most beautiful tone, but the Katana did have the best metal sound, it had a very tight low-end.
Agreed, and the Katana's tight low end is what I need for my 8-string guitar and 6-string bass.
I don't think they set the eq on the DSL correctly. Mine can put out a huge metal sound, but Rob's correct in saying that the DSL needs to be driven more. And they likely didn't have the tone shift on which scoops the mid a bit.
NGL, I had this on in the background and I had to doubletake at the Hotone. I'd record with that every day.
HAppy Birthday Mr. Lee Anderton ! You have brought us amazing entertainment , thank you .
I love the Egnator sound. Nice and rich, like Columbian coffee...ish.
Yeah I love my Tweaker 15, but I use it completely differently to how Rob would. It's just not a Rob type amp :P It does other things excellently though
How do you tend to use your Tweaker?
I really liked it too. But you could hear there was so much potential not being used. It made ME want to play with the controls too. Might be a nice studio amp, if it's got the sort of sound gems in there that it made me think it has.
Happy birthday to Capt Lee! Would you believe I'm actually 21 today! I suppose great minds.... are born on the same day!!!!!!!!!!
Don’t get too hammered
That only makes sense in America. If he's from anywhere else he would have been drinking for at least 2 years.
Danoe B-G still don’t get too hammered.
Marcus Hogan turning 19 today, suppose I should bring myself up to the great minds bracket lol
+Danoe B-G Or even more than 2 years. In some countries, such France, you can legally start drinking at 16...
Holy shit Rob really knows his stuff!! He's so accurate with those guesses
Chaps is the absolute man. Where his eyes lack, his ears make up for it.
That Orange Rocker just does it for me! Unreal.
Phenomenal ear, Rob! Love these blindfold tests! Missed hearing clean settings. So much is revealed about an amp on a clean setting. Much harder to find a great clean sound!
Would have liked to have seen a bassbreaker 15 thrown into the mix
the guy who edits these hilarious videos needs a raise.
Jonathan Cooper good list.
the small Orange amps are great, I randomly decided to buy a used Or 15 a while ago and I'm so glad I did its awesome
I love these blindfold challenges!
I just like the way Blackstar amps sound.
I know I might be a little biased, because I have one, but seriously though.
This just makes me appreciate my Katana so much more. It definitely is a fair competitor to these amps when properly utilized. Its really close to being the better of them.
1: 6505
*2: Katana
*3: Orange
4: Rob's Red Dwarf Settings
5: Marshall
6: Blackstar
7: Egnater
8: Hotone
Seriously a quality video. Entertaining the entire way through. Keep it up guys.
The Orange sounded best to me, Good crunch without losing the tone. Rob tends to like too much gain though! I'd like to see you do this with clean sounding amps & the Danish god playing.
Thanks for uploading this today guys, after the day I've had this was awesome to see in my sub box!
Great video as always. I'm just waiting for the Vai video! Come on guys!
I really enjoyed these shootouts. Very happy about Orange. pleasantly surprised by the Blackstar
Rory, those songs you made were amazing xD I want a compilation of them!! (P.S.: the Peavey sounded best to my ears as well!)
2:21 That was the most unenthusiastic "I was born ready" ever uttered lol
More of these blinds with Rob pls 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Excellent and proper use of the word penultimate, just as captain Lee was switching to the egnator.
Orange 8.1
Peavey 7.5
Blackstar 7
Hotone 6.5
Boss 7.7
Egnater 7.6
Marshall 8.5
Victory 8
Rory 10
Rick... it's all based on what kind of tone an individual prefers. It doesn't mean Egnater isn't making good amps.
I've played Egnaters I loved. I rated based on what I heard. Its quite possible I just liked what he played on the Marshall.
That 6505 mini is such a BEAST! Factoring that its only $499 it destroys almost any other amp on earth!
I have watched you guys for years and your videos only get more entertaining. When I am the market i will most definitely buying a chapman from andertons.
Zac Carter Chapman have gone down the drain. As soon as they released their new standard range, they kept the old models, priced them higher and made worse guitars for the same price
cbf edge I like the new ml3 traditional but that's about it
It would be awesome if you guys just had a video talking about the state of the industry (Fender, Gibson PRS) and their prices and such.
The blindfold challenges are great guys! :)
JMO.
11:28 - A wild Fluff appears. :) Excellent editing as always gents!
I love these blindfold videos for the comedic value
I hate them because they remind me that people can play better me even if they're blind
The Orange amp sounded great, but my favourite was the Peavey. Great gain sound, but still articulate
Chappers @ 12:45 on the Egnater Tweaker review video “I really really like this amp.” Don’t feel bad about giving it the low score. You loved it when it was dialed in right.
holy fook! when Rob does the settings for the RD1 it sounds amazing!
The egnator can/should be dialed in! I wanted so bad to turn the knobs. (Nobs lol) The low mid high can be is tricky. But when you hit your spot...Nice!!😁
1. Peavey 6505
2. Marshall DSL20Hr
3. Katana 100
Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘
Rob's playing is awesome as usual, and he probably has the best ears of any guitarist alive.
Thanks
@@uriteimwrong7317 no one set it up, they say like 5 times in both videos that everything is set at 12 on all amps
I have a Tweaker 88 that I use as my beater amp for practice, I love the thing, but I've never liked the sound out of one that I haven't gotten to mess with
Rob's auditory acumen is uncanny.
More blindfold challenges please 🎉🎉🎉🎉. Love em
23:17 everyone's just lost it
Damn I've not heard any of the other amps yet but Rob made that orange sound great!
I have the Peavey 6505 MH and I keep the gain at 1.5 on the red channel. It just has way too much gain but once you dial it in its great.
+1 I have the big version of the 5150, and assuming the mini basically the same control-wise, I never go much past 9 or 10 o'clock for rhythm playing. That mini is amazing
That's the thing about the tweaker, takes a while to dial in your tone.
But when you do, it's heavenly
The best I’ve heard Rob play, probably because he said he recorded yesterday and was practicing like crazy. Great video, will you guys now do a third video, amongst those >< 1k, blindfolded of course?
