- Bluecast X One is the latest metal castable resin from the Bluecast powerhouse and I was delighted to be able to put it through its paces here. Having heard stories about how it's the best 3D printing resin yet from Bluecast, I was excited to give it a go, printing, cleaning, curing and eventually casting some bronze pieces.
VIDEO UPDATE : Folks tell me that here in the UK (and other parts of the world) Ethanol is more usually called Methylated Spirits. Now that is good news for us UK dwellers as Meths IS cheaper than IPA, giving Bluecast X One another advantage over other resins 😁

My favorite resin! I use it a lot for large and complex sports rings with heavy lettering and areas for enameling. Couple suggestions: You put a glass bottle into your sonic cleaner. Glass will reduce the sonic action because it is thick and hard. Find yourself a thin plastic container to use in the sonic bath. I use red solo cups and don't worry about the lid. Cleaning is much more complete and faster. Next, do a pre-sonic dip in some ethanol before going into the sonic. This will get the bulk of the uncured resin off. So you will basically have a "dirty" container and a "cleaner" container. The one that goes in the sonic cleaner can be reused multiple times. For supports, you are making too big a deal of it. I use lychee medium almost 100% with the exception of a few thin or heavy's as needed. I have NO issues. This leads me to believe your exposure time is too low. Try bumping it up a little. I'm happy to send you some pictures if you like with some very tiny areas with very tiny supports.
That's exactly how I clean my prints. Initial dunk into a "dirty" pre-rinse, then into some cleaner stuff in a plastic container in the sonic. When the sonic alcohol gets dirty, it goes into the pre-rinse container. When it finally gets full, or I run out of clean alcohol, I deal with the dirty stuff. It really saves on the alcohol since the bulk of the uncured resin gets rinsed off in the pre-rinse, making the second wash alcohol last longer before getting too "dirty".

I had the same problem in reverse. :D I kept hearing people talk about methylated spirits in videos and didn't know what that is in Germany since we just call it "burning spirit" (directly translated) I guess people get all mythological about booze. :D Probably from standing too close to the still and inhaling the fumes.

Just be careful the mix of Meths as it can cause adverse effects. This is why Ethanol 99.9% is preferred but most resins can be cleaned in meths/ipa/ethanol

Going to have to check this out for my sister's jewelry casting. 🤔 I like the color-change aspect; An indication of post-processing 'doneness' is a great idea, especially when the change is so dramatic. I feel like it's a concept that could stand to see more use.

Haha! Great video Geoff! Denatured alcohol is called Methylated Spirits here in Oz and it's as cheap as chips! Far easier to get in bulk and much cheaper than IPA. I think the colour change when it's ready and the final hue (white) is fantastic. So it looks like you've found my casting resin! Thanks Geoff!

The reason you struggle to find denatured alcohol in the UK is that it's called methylated spirits here and it has purple dye in it. Other than the purple colour it's the same stuff.

Wow on the ethanol! here in Australia its called methylated spirits and 4lt cost $15aud, ipa for us or me anyways on the other hand cost us between $10 and $20 a lt! i use methylated spirits in my wash and cure and so far it seems to work well.
Ah... you may have taught me something there... I didn't realise Meths and ethanol were one in the same. In that case, it's cheaper here too...
is there any percentage specific for this alcohol or I can use a 70% gallon that I have already and why the official site says that you can also use IPA?

Though it might be easier to find a 95%+ Vodka
I'd like to place stones into my 3d prints and cast the stones in place. Can you recommend a printable wax or resin that can be used for this?

Cocoa's happy today as Rezin's at the vets, so he's not harassing her and she's getting all the treats and attention to herself. We've been a little worried about Rezin as he's lazy with his back legs, waddling a bit. So he was having Xrays on his hips. Thankfully we've just had a call to say he's absolutely fine with no dysplasia, etc, so it's just normal clumsy legs as he's still only 9 months old.
I didnt know you could do such a thing with resin printing! Now it makes more sense when people say they use resin printers to make jewelry 😂 I always thought they were just leaving the final product as a resin
Thanks for the review! It'd be interesting to hear your thoughts on this resin vs. Siraya Tech Cast, given that Cast is considerably cheaper and, from what I've seen, casts and prints just as well.
This is an excellent resin that has only two drawbacks when comparing with ST (which I haven't). One, as you say, is cost... ST is cheaper. Two, it's more fiddly to print with. Thick supports are a must for X1 and that means a lot more clean up of the print / cast. But ST is happy with thin supports. The only other factor is printing quality and those I haven't compared yet 😁
you don't need a bunch of heavy supports. if you exposure time is good, mediums (lychee) are fine. it's expensive as hell. thats the drawback. but if you have a part that nothing else will cast, x-one will. its a fantastic tool to have in your arsenal. it's all about the right resin for the job at hand. no one resin will do everything.

Without a doubt, X1 is far superior to X10. X1 was designed with home grade printers in mind whereas X10 was an industrial product sold on to home users.
Can you do a video on more engineering/functional casting with resin 3D prints? Maybe with aluminium, and things like gears or testing of tolerances of holes and features in the final castings. So we can consider if it is viable to 3D print and cast engineering parts on a hobby level rather than CNC machining it on a hobby CNC machine.
I'd be interested in this as well.
Also very interested in casting engineering parts, i'm going to try it with lost PLA casting with my ender3 v2 but I'm thinking to also buy a resin 3d printer, mainly to cast things
My prints are not turning white completely after curing in IPA (Ultrasonic cleaner) and air blowing, is it only suggested to be cleaned in ethanol?

I believe the quality of the ethanol is important, with a minimum of 91%. The purer the better I think.
To clean up some of the support issues, could resin be used and a uv flashlight?
Probably, yes, though I like using a spot of wax as this can be overfilled and then scraped back 😁

Did you use the Mars printer for this resin, I have the 1st mars printer. Will it work with that?
This reason will work fine in the Mars. Bluecast has settings available for Elegoo printers 😁
You can get denatured ethanol quite cheaply, search for bioethanol or methylated spirits (the solution you have there is spiked with methanol to stop numpties drinking it).
A couple of others have pointed this out. I'm pleased to learn something new, and it is cheaper than IPA so that's great 😁

do I need special preparation and resin before use? I tried to print and I didn't succeed, the resin had some lumps
No, nothing special for this resin. It likes to be warm, around 25C. Filter it, clean everything down, level your plate. Then check your settings with those on the Bluecast website. It's a nice easy resin to work with 😁
What selling would you use if using a Elegoo Mars 3?

Just out of curiosity, how come you aren't using flex plates on the printer? I know it doesn't affect the quality and the scratches probably help with adhesion, just found it interesting
For me, flex plates are just one more thing to clean 😁
@@vogman 😄 true, if you are keeping the resin in the printer though, it's quicker to clean and snap back in, nah was just curious, i use lots of the Esun Tough and that can break anything you pry it off with if it doesn't let go immediately, that's why i got my flex plate for the Mono X
What do you do with the resin after it has melted out of the mold?
there's nothing left. during the 3rd stage of the burnout, the wax or resins are vaporized.
Do you like this one more then the seratek castable resin?
I prefer the colour of Bluecast, but I like thin supports, and Siraya Tech gives me those.
I have no idea why I can't print and cast, when I tried x one I got bad texture and all the type on the design was filled with sterling. I did exactly as the manufacturer instructed.
Hi sorry it's me again, i have a question about the burnout cycles. its a totall of 11 hours of run time per burnout which is a long time to have such a power hungry piece of equipment running. Do you know much it costs in electricity per burnout?

I've never heard anyone say, "Electricity is sooooo cheap."
It costs, but so do gas bottles or charcoal, etc.
The convenience of electricity wins for me, so I genuinely don't want to start fretting about the costs. That's why I make my wife pay the bill 😁😁😁

hi everyone I am just start working with x one and a question is about supports on model,when and how the best way take it off supports from model,before cleaning or after cleaning,just breaking them or gently trying to cut thems. thanks
You'll get different answer from different folks 😁
Personally I clip away supports. When you tear away, there's a high probability of damaging the print. Even though the damage is small, it can show through in the finished casting. I prefer to clip, leaving a tiny nub behind. This I then gently sand away with very fine sand paper before casting.

I do both. I wash after it comes off the plate, remove the supports, then wash again to remove all the resin that was stuck behind the supports. It works well. Just no more than a minute or two 😁

In the UK, isn't methylated spirits the same as denatured alcohol? Certainly from the point of view of mixing shellac it's fine.
Yes, denaturing is a catch-all term for making ethanol undrinkable, this includes methylated spirits

@@vogman worth just testing first (in case it does damage) but as far as I understand, meths (in the UK) is the same alcohol; just with additives to make it purple, and make it unpleasant to drink. The purple colouring doesn't affect shellac (even blonde flakes) so I assume it'll probably be OK.
Dunno what your drinkable alcohol situation is in the UK, but ethanol is what is in your beer and wine and spirits. So just find something that's 180proof+. Round the US That's usually something like Everclear.
So what you're suggesting is that I do a world tour testing drinkable alcoholic beverages. Well that sounds like a tough job, but I'd be willing to give it a go 😁
At this point I'm sticking with Siriya tech got a heap of that left to use

I hope you compare it to the 4k resin. It looks the best at least from someone who never 3d printed and watched pictures.
For just ordinary printing, it would be too expensive to use this. I agree it prints very nicely, but it's expensive because it's used for metal casting. Two resins that print great are Phrozen 4K Aqua and Siraya Tech Fast. Those are much cheaper options for good old, ordinary printing 😁

@@vogman Is there anything on the resin front. I know DLP is a thing. DLP resin seems like a scan when you reviewed it. Is there any chemists that is actually improving resin for upcoming products?

I love how this prints, but I also love my thin supports. Genuinely in my tiny venture into X One printing, I've had more failed prints than I've had collectively with Cast. This shows you how careful you need to be with supports.

@@vogman I think that's mostly because pure ethanol can be used to make alcoholic beverages. Methylated spirits have stuff added to make them taste so bad you could never drink it. Then taxes etc. don't apply and make it cheaper.
that contact point requirement is a killer for me, that would ruin many of my prints even with careful orientation :(
Yes, it's a real drawback and a common issue with Bluecasts resins. CR3A is the same. This really is a pity. Bluecast has worked hard here and I applaud their efforts... but it's just a little short of perfect for me.

I don't think this resin exists any longer. 😞 I'm trying to find something similar for higher detail jewelry. I like that this is non toxic, and doesn't have a ridiculous clean up process with veg oil.

I have some designs with extremely fine details, would the x-one resin be acceptable, or should I spend the extra money for the more expensive resins?
