- In this video I show you how I made a UV curing station for SLA resin 3D printing using an old microwave I got for free, and about $20 in parts from Amazon.

If you wanted to upgrade, you could also spray the inside of the Microwave with a reflective coating, or use some aluminum tape. And supplement (or replace) the UV lamp with LED UV strips that stick to the inside, which would flood the chamber. This is a brilliant idea, and I'm researching on DIY UV chambers because I'm getting in to 3D Printing for Dungeons and Dragons.
This is what I was going to say cover the inside with foil to increase the reflectivity of the UV light.
@@MemelordSupreme agree. it will reduce time on curing quite a bit which will save on the light.
this is actually genius and i have everything i need already! I've been using the same UV light/turntable set up, and it works well for smaller pieces, but the little turntable is a pain with larger prints. Thanks for the idea and walkthrough, I'll be sure to send the results your way!
Awesome! I can't wait to see it.
Thanks i had a microwave and was tempted to buy a small uv light now i know what im doing next weekend lol
nice idea! i find that postcuring the part submerged in water enables a lot quicker, non-tacky cure! apparrently oxygen contact can inhibit the resin from curing fully at the surface, especially if the ipa is already a little dirty. in addition to some reflective coating on the inside of your chamber you might be done curing in ~5 minuits!
I ended up building one of these for a friend, following advice from some people in the comments to cover the inside with reflective tape and using UV led strips, thanks for the inspiration!
I use a nail curing station like that sitting on top of a cardboard box lined with aluminum tape, and one of those solar turn tables. Works great for me but I don't usually print anything with enough weight that the turntable wont turn. That microwave is a great idea!
had this idea then found your video so it sealed the deal. built mine tonight funny enough i had the same microwave almost. i wrapped the inside with chrome vinyl to make it reflective then i added about 65 ft of uv led strips (395-405nm) i got from amazon inside and wrapped them under the glass turntable to cure from underneath also. now i'm 3d printing a riser for the drive sprocket and some bigger wheels for the carousel to lift it slightly to clear the lights. 20 for the lights 10 for the vinyl and its gonna be perfect i even just plugged wall socket adapter for the light right into the spade connectors from the transformer.
Super cool. I'd love to see some pics or a video of this when you're done with it.
im interested in making one myself. did u find that 65ft of led strips was too much or was it the right amount?
how about adding acrylic mirrors inside to bounce the light even better
Further upgrades: A heating system to get the internal area to maybe max 60c, Some speciality resins get thier best properites cured under heat. Another idea might be to combine the wash and curing system, perhaps a bracked on the ceiling of the chamber that holds a pot of IPA and it has magnetic stirring in the bottom moved by the turntable.
That's a pretty cool idea. Nice job.
I would probably line the inside of the microwave with reflective material with Aluminium foil or space blancket.
Aluminum is one of the only good reflectors for big chunk of the UV spectrum that you actually want to use, so some aluminum foil or tape on the other walls would probably help cut the curing time down. There's probably some dead zones that prevent you from curing in the whole cylindrical volume above the glass plate, and this would fix those pretty easily. You could even put reflectors down on the bottom. You could also probably make a custom connector to the little rotating bit under the removable glass base have it rotate whatever kind of bed you want pretty easily, which opens up some neat options. A custom parts-curing tree would let you suspend a lot, and the aluminum reflectors would make it much more even in coverage so it could actually work.
just what i was looking for but i don't understand how you connect the wires (polarity) thanks
How is the Lucas oil holding up? Thanks! 🎉
Similar to the chassis of microwave would reflect the microwaves around the chamber for even heading, could you line the inside of the microwave with foil to reflect the light around for an even more even cure?
I considered that, but honestly it works very well as is thanks to the turntable.
I might experiment with it in the future, maybe. But it doesn't seem to be needed.
wowww Man!!! Tank`s a good idea
I actually just made this with LED Strips, cant wait to try it. let me know if you want pics.
İs there any uv light ratio? Like every 10gr resin 20w uv light for 1 min loke that?
Love that idea. Actually thought of this myself and now i hate, that i wasnt the first one :D Just got my hands on an old microwave… maybe aluminum tape helps reflecting some more light, consequently decreasing curing time. Maybe not relevant with that big uv light. I only have some leftover 2835 UV LED Strip
I never added any reflective material to the inside, and I haven't had any issues curing. It will cure most parts in 20ish minutes which I consider to be quite good.
What happened with the original version? 🧐🤔
In any case... Re-watched, re-liked!
I reposted it due to the original one having some kind of issue with the algorithm.
lucas i need your help with somthing remember the 32-bit video you posted well i did the exact same thing and it said it crashed do i restart or i just cant get 32-bit on this computer btw its an macbook air
I'm not sure, honestly. That video is quite old and I see that people are having more and more trouble getting it to work. I suspect something is deprecated and causing problems.
help_ I can't find UV lamp link
You could line the whole interior with UV LED strips.
This design was specifically to avoid needing that. The turntable allows good coverage with a single light source.
Its shows that people dont understand uv light we open tge door what do we the sun light it emits uv light...omg we have to run inside...we cant see uv light...what idiots
It's funny, I had exactly the same idea 3 days ago and then this video gets suggested to me.
BTW, you are overcuring your parts, you only need about 5 mins of curing. Also your was setup could do with a two bath system (a wash bath and a rinse bath) and you also don't need to wash for so long, a couple minutes will do.
Was that a 20 minute cure?!
Cover the interior with aluminum foil
I broke my microwave for this
Microwave mod starts at 4:20 - cleaning & safety
Cover off at 6:20
13:07 "simmer" 0_0 I hope not. Alchol should not be heated.
You can safely warm alcohol without it being dangerous. The temps that are being used are no way close enough to the flashpoint for an issue.
Fix that table please, it's giving me anxiety.
Lets be honest 20 mins is way to much for that
